THE PODCAST
Dear Vargas Families,
As we enter into the final weeks of what has been an incredibly unique school year, I am overwhelmed with feelings of pride and
gratitude for our Vargas community. It seems like just yesterday we were gearing up to launch the school virtually, something that we
had never needed to do before. Now, as the year comes to a close, we begin to resemble a more typical school year with some of our
students and teachers back on campus. What a journey it has been to get to this point! I cannot express enough how proud I am of
our Vargas community during this past year. Our teachers worked tirelessly to adapt and deliver meaningful and engaging instruction
to our students. Our staff provided tech support, meals, and outreach services. Our parents and caregivers partnered with us to learn
how to support online learning at home while also juggling many other responsibilities. And our students demonstrated incredible
resiliency as they adapted to new ways of learning and continued to remain engaged while being away from the classroom. The
pandemic and this past year have highlighted how important it is for us to work together and strengthened our ability to do so. I am
confident that we will return in August stronger, more resilient, and ready for the year ahead. It has been a privilege to watch our
Vargas Scientists transform in so many ways over the course of the year. We are so proud of all they have accomplished!
While we plan for a full in-person return in August, there are still some unknowns about what the in-person return will look like. We
will send updates over the summer through Class Dojo and our messenger system. Please be sure to be on the lookout for these
messages.
As we head into summer, we encourage you to continue the learning journey with your child by spending time outside, visiting new
places, and learning from the world around us. We look forward to hearing all about the creative ways you have had fun when school
starts in August!

Message from Mr. Austin
If you haven’t heard already, this will be my last year serving as your Assistant Principal. What an amazing time it’s been!
Words cannot express how much I have appreciated all of the kindness and support this community has shown me over
these last few years. Although I will deeply miss being at Vargas, my family is moving to the Sacramento area where my
sons’ grandparents, Aunts and Uncles are all waiting for them! It is certainly a bittersweet moment in our lives. Vargas is
such an amazing place to work and learn- everybody from the students, parents, staff and community all come together to
make this a truly special school. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for having me as a part of this incredible
community. Goodbye Vargas scientists- I will miss you greatly!
Vargas Teacher of the Year - Julio Delgado, 5th Grade Teacher
Mr. Delgado is an amazing educator who truly knows our Vargas community. He is aware of the
challenges that families face, especially during the pandemic. Mr. Delgado consistently adjusts his
instruction to meet individual needs. He is reflective and is always open to new ideas and the
perspectives that his colleagues provide. Mr. Delgado builds strong relationships with his students and
staff members and is always looking for ways to improve his teaching through professional
development. Mr. Delgado has made such a positive impact on the Vargas Community during this
challenging year. We are so lucky to have him and his leadership. Congratulations, Mr. Delgado!
Vargas Classified Employees of the Year - Van Welch & Lucy Mahnel, Kitchen Staff
For the past year Van Welch and Lucy Mahnel worked in our Vargas kitchen to provide meals and food
to our community. They have worked tirelessly since schools have shut down, including summer and
breaks, and always with a positive attitude. They not only support Vargas and our neighboring
communities, but they also support multiple schools and communities in the south side of Sunnyvale.
They continued to show flexibility as we transitioned from the virtual to the hybrid model. Everything
they do is with a friendly wave and positive attitude. Vargas is so grateful for both Van & Lucy. They
are an amazing team! Congratulations to them both!
Character Trait of the Month
Every month at Vargas, we focus on a character trait or Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skill. As the school year comes to a close, we
have highlighted the following character traits: building relationships, growth mindset, leadership, caring, self-management, social
awareness, empathy, perseverance, and responsibility. These skills provide a foundation for safe and positive learning, and enhances

Science Spin
Thank you to all the families who helped support their students with the virtual science activities throughout the
school year. We were able to continue our science focus, even though we were virtual. We want our student
scientists to continue their scientific exploration over the summer. I have put together a Summer Science Bitmoji
Classroom with links for fun summer science activities. Keep checking back- it is a work in progress.

Student Council
What an amazing year it has been for our Vargas Student Council! We started the year holding our virtual student
body election over Zoom and then continued to have all of our meetings virtually. Our dedicated group of 10
students have worked together on filming messages to the school about the Character Trait of the Month, planning
a virtual school Spirit Week, organizing a winter Gift Tree donation drive, and most recently putting on the very first
Virtual Talent Show. They have all been spectacular to work with! Mr. G & Ms. Maddox thank you for all of your
creative ideas and phenomenal leadership. We want to wish our 2020-2021 Student Council the best of luck and
just know that they will continue their mission of spreading hope & positivity to their community.
Green Team
The Green Team worked so hard this year, despite holding all meetings over Zoom. Although it looked very different
from previous years, the students took what they learned and applied it to their home lives. They picked up trash in
their neighborhoods, created art out of recycled materials, made home composting bins, took shorter showers to save
water, and so much more. Way to go team! Remember to keep up the practices you learned this year, every bit makes
a difference!
Food Distribution
Twice a month we will be distributing free groceries from Second Harvest Food Bank. The next distribution is Friday,
June 4 from 11:30-2:00 PM or until supplies last. Families can drive or walk up to pick up the groceries free of charge
with no income verification needed. Grocery Distribution is located on the Carson Ave. side of Vargas School. The
boxes of groceries are large, so please be sure you have something to transport them home in if you choose to walk.
Please help spread the word to other Vargas and Sunnyvale School District families!
Grocery Distribution will continue at Vargas throughout the summer. Please add the following dates to your calendars:

Uniforms
The uniform dress code will be back in effect for next school year. You may buy your polo shirt, black pants/shorts anywhere
clothing is sold. Usually Old Navy, Target, Walmart and The Children’s Place have great deals during the summer.

The last day of school for hybrid classrooms will be in-person rather than on Zoom. This will allow students to enjoy the last day of
school together on campus.
All students will need to bring all devices to school for device collection. (iPads, Chromebooks, chargers, hotspots)
Report Cards will be distributed to students on this day as well.
When students are not on campus, they can work on any of the following asynchronous activities:
Students can choose to: read, write a reflection about the year, write about your summer goals, play a game with a sibling,
write a letter to thank your family for their help this year, write a thank you to your teacher, make Mr. Austin a good-bye card

We are inviting our 5th grade students back to campus in the morning to enjoy a final day of school together before moving onto
middle school. More information will be sent out to 5th grade families with specifics. Students will return their devices and get their
Report Cards on this day.

Al entrar en las últimas semanas de lo que ha sido un año escolar increíblemente único, me siento abrumado por los sentimientos de
orgullo y gratitud por nuestra comunidad de Vargas. Parece que ayer nos estábamos preparando para inaugurar la escuela
virtualmente, algo que nunca habíamos necesitado hacer antes. Ahora, cuando el año escolar llega a su fin, comenzamos a parecernos
un año escolar más típico con algunos de nuestros estudiantes y maestros en el campus. ¡Qué viaje ha sido llegar a este punto! No
puedo expresar lo suficiente lo orgulloso que estoy de nuestra comunidad de Vargas durante este año pasado. Nuestros maestros
trabajaron incansablemente para adaptarse y brindar una instrucción significativa y atractiva a nuestros estudiantes. Nuestro personal
brindó soporte técnico, comidas y servicios de extensión. Nuestros padres y cuidadores se asociaron con nosotros para aprender cómo
apoyar el aprendizaje en línea en el hogar y al mismo tiempo hacer muchas otras tareas. Y nuestros estudiantes demostraron una
capacidad de recuperación increíble al adaptarse a nuevas formas de aprendizaje y continuar participando mientras estaba fuera del
aula. La pandemia y el año pasado pusieron de relieve lo importante que es para nosotros trabajar juntos y fortalecieron nuestra
capacidad para hacerlo. Estoy seguro de que regresaremos en agosto más fuertes, más resistentes y listos para el año que viene. Ha
sido un privilegio ver a nuestros Científicos de Vargas transformarse de tantas maneras a lo largo del año. ¡Estamos muy orgullosos de
todo lo que han logrado!
Si bien planeamos una devolución completa en persona en agosto, todavía hay algunas incógnitas sobre cómo será la devolución en
persona. Enviaremos actualizaciones durante el verano a través de Class Dojo y nuestro sistema de mensajería. Asegúrese de estar
atento a estos mensajes.
A medida que nos acercamos al verano, lo alentamos a que continúe el viaje de aprendizaje con su hijo pasando tiempo al aire libre,

El Sr. Delgado es un educador increíble que realmente conoce a nuestra comunidad de Vargas. Es
consciente de los desafíos que enfrentan las familias, especialmente durante la pandemia. El Sr.
Delgado ajusta constantemente su instrucción para satisfacer las necesidades individuales. Es reflexivo

Durante el año pasado, Van Welch y Lucy Mahnel trabajaron en nuestra cocina Vargas para
proporcionar comidas y alimentos a nuestra comunidad. Han trabajado incansablemente desde que
cerraron las escuelas, incluido el verano y las vacaciones, y siempre con una actitud positiva. No solo
apoyan a Vargas y nuestras comunidades vecinas, sino que también apoyan a varias escuelas y

Giro de la ciencia

Consejo Estudiantil
¡Qué año tan maravilloso ha sido para nuestro Consejo Estudiantil de Vargas! Comenzamos el año celebrando nuestra
elección de cuerpo estudiantil virtual sobre Zoom y luego continuamos teniendo todas nuestras reuniones
virtualmente. Nuestro dedicado grupo de 10 estudiantes ha trabajado juntos en la filmación de mensajes para la
escuela sobre el rasgo de carácter del mes, planificando una semana del espíritu escolar virtual, organizando una
campaña de donación de regalos de invierno y, más recientemente, organizando el primer espectáculo virtual de
talentos. ¡Ha sido espectacular trabajar con todos ellos! Sr. G y Sra. Maddox nos da gracias por todas sus ideas creativas y liderazgo

Distribución de comida
Dos veces al mes distribuiremos alimentos gratuitos del Second Harvest Food Bank. La próxima distribución es el
viernes 4 de junio de 11: 30-2: 00 PM o hasta agotar existencias. Las familias pueden conducir o caminar para recoger
los comestibles sin cargo sin necesidad de verificación de ingresos. La distribución de comestibles está ubicada en el
lado de Carson Ave. de la escuela Vargas. Las cajas de comestibles son grandes, así que asegúrese de tener algo para
transportarlas a casa si decide caminar. ¡Por favor ayude a correr la voz a otras familias del Distrito Escolar de Vargas y Sunnyvale!

Equipo de ser ecologico
El Equipo Verde trabajó muy duro este año, a pesar de celebrar todas las reuniones en Zoom. Aunque se veía muy
diferente a años anteriores, los estudiantes tomaron lo que aprendieron y lo aplicaron a sus vidas hogareñas. Recogieron
basura en sus vecindarios, crearon arte con materiales reciclados, hicieron contenedores de compostaje en casa,
tomaron duchas más cortas para ahorrar agua y mucho más. ¡Así se hace equipo! Recuerde mantener las prácticas que
aprendió este año, ¡cada parte marca la diferencia!
Uniformes
El código de vestimenta del uniforme volverá a estar en vigor para el próximo año escolar. Puede comprar su polo, pantalones o
pantalones cortos negros en cualquier lugar donde se venda ropa. Por lo general, Old Navy, Target, Walmart y The Children’s Place

No puedo creer que ya estemos al final del año escolar. Ha sido un placer para mí servir como su presidente de la PTA durante los
