     OVERVIEW

The WA Screen Academy (WASA) offers one of Australia’s most outstanding advanced-level training
programs in screen production. Operating in a unique partnership with the renowned WA Academy
of Performing Arts (WAAPA), WASA benefits from close collaboration with this vibrant creative
community of actors, designers and composers.
The intensive, one-year course develops students’ practical skills and creative vision across a range of
formats including drama, documentary, magazine/lifestyle, multi-cam, music videos and multi-platform
content. Graduates accumulate 10-12 significant credits working on high-quality productions using
state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, taught and mentored by leading industry professionals.
Students study at either a Bachelors or Masters level.
The WA Screen Academy has an excellent record of preparing graduates for employment in the
industry. Graduates have become writers, production staff and crew on a number of renowned
Australian drama series and documentary productions, have secured feature film funding and more.
The program is delivered on the Mount Lawley campus of Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western
Australia. Perth is a vibrant city of 1.7 million and the centre of a robust screen industry.

The WA Screen Academy fosters the highest levels of creative inquiry, intellectual rigour and craft excellence
in a supportive and exciting environment. It is dedicated to incubating the individuals and teams who will

The WA Screen Academy year runs over 40 teaching weeks from mid-February to the end of November,
with a two-week mid-year break. This intensive year of study is equivalent to three university semesters or
1.5 years. Mid-year entry (late July) is available in special circumstances.

The WA Screen Academy program involves four major projects:
      • Documentaries
      • The Academy Films – dramas in collaboration with the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA)
      • Client based productions - Commercials/music videos/magazine and lifestyle shows
      • Multi-cam Web drama series

These core projects are supported by a number of theory units and workshops in your area of specialisation.
Many students also become involved in off-slate projects such as films for the City of Perth, music videos,
      commercials and corporate videos.
Students can choose one major area of specialisation and up to two secondary areas.

      Areas of Specialisation:
      • Producing
      • Directing
      • Scriptwriting
      • Cinematography
      • Editing
      • Sound
      • Production Design

The WA Screen Academy runs a Bachelors and Masters program concurrently, with different levels of
      assessment.
For students with an Advanced Diploma in Screen and Media (or equivalent) the WA Screen Academy
program results in a Bachelor of Creative Industries in Screen Studies.
For students with a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or 5-years related industry experience, the WA
Screen Academy program results in a Master of Screen Studies.

“My year at the Screen Academy made me laugh, cry and consider running screaming
into the distance. It’s an intense workload, launching you into an environment requiring
you to act like an professional, work as a team and pull your weight. The hours are
long, but the end product is rewarding and the experience is priceless. I’ve made some
incredible friends and come out with work I’m very proud of. I would recommend this
course to anyone seeking to take their skills to a professional standard. It’s fun, it’s
nerve-wracking, and it’s totally worth it.”

                         Ben Young
                         ECU Directing graduate
Since studying at the WA Screen Academy, Ben has written and directed seven short films, including Bush Basher, which was financed through
the springboard program at Screen Australia and recently screened at Flickerfest. He has also written and directed on the kids series Trapped and
Castaway and directed EPK documentaries for Last Train to Freo, The Circuit, Marx and Venus and Stone Bros.
Music videos Ben has directed have received much recognition. His clip for Drapht’s track Bali Party was voted Ripe Clip of the Week on
Channel-V and his video for The Voltaire Twins track Animalia was voted number 7 in Rage’s top 50 videos of 2011. Ben has also directed
television commercials and has written two feature films which are in development with the support of ScreenWest, his latest having just received
development funding through ScreenWest’s Feature Navigator program. In 2012 Ben has a slate of music videos lined up and will direct on the
                         ABC series Prank Patrol.

                         Suzanne Barton
                         ECU Producing/Scriptwriting graduate
“Deciding to abandon cushy corporate life and pursue something more creative at the Screen Academy in 2010 was one of the best decisions I
have ever made. The year is dynamic, hectic, challenging, inspiring and absolutely full of laughter. I came out of it with a Masters in producing and
writing, but the rewards are so much more than the piece of paper. Students walk away with a stellar showreel, industry know-how, a wealth of
contacts and perhaps some of life’s most enduring friendships. Screen Academy is like... creative boot camp. And it can really open doors.”

                         Caitlan O’Connor
                         ECU Editing/Directing graduate
After completing her undergraduate degree, Caitlan, wanting to expand her knowledge base, applied for the Master of Professional
Communications at the WA Screen Academy under a directing major. The course offered her the option to develop further skills in the areas of
producing and editing. Soon after finishing her year at the WA Screen Academy she obtained full time employment as a junior editor. Since then
she has edited a number of TVCs, web content, short films, and more recently has completed music videos shot by some of Australia’s top DOPs.
She has also worked with ex-WA Screen Academy students who have also found professional employment in the advertising industry. Caitlan
considers the WA Screen Academy to be the best academic decision she has made and values her time there highly.

                         Ben Mizzi
                         ECU Directing/Cinematography graduate
“Screen Academy was an intense yet rewarding year of education into the film industry. As a Director and Director of Photography I was able to
get involved in all six of the WAAPA films, gaining significant experience and materials for my showreel. While the workload is tough, it’s a baptism
by fire introduction to the film industry and upon the end of the year, there is a definite feeling of achievement, personal satisfaction and the belief
that I am ready and able to advance my career in the film industry. I’d recommend the course to anyone who is willing to test their mettle for a
                         future in screen.”
