FIFTIETH UNIVERSITY OPEN
Arguably, the five major tournaments in the World this year are:
Australian Open (February)
French Open (May/June)
Wimbledon (June/July)
University Open (July/August)
US Open (August/September)

However, while you can’t play in the 4 Grand Slam tournaments, you can play in the
University Open Tennis Championships.
The Wrap UQ TENNIS E-NEWS - 24 June 2021 - UQ Tennis Club
The University Open provides an opportunity for all Club members
(Fixture players and Social players) to get some great competitive
Tennis and see the top Queensland players in action.

The 2021 University Open will be the 50th University Open which is a major
achievement for the UQ Tennis Club.

This is an open tournament, so entry is open to all players. However, players must
have a Tennis Australia My Tennis Player I.D. Number to enter. Players who do not
have their 11-digit Player I.D. Number need to contact Tennis Australia to get a
number before trying to enter (E-mail play@tennis.com.au or phone 1800 752
983).

The 50th University Open will be played over three weekends in July/August (17
July-18 July, 24 July-25 July & 31 July-1 August) with the Australian Ranking Points
events (Open & 18/U Singles & Doubles) being played on 17-18 & 24-25 July.

Although it has ranking points events with significant prizemoney, the main
objective is to provide some great competitive Tennis for Club members, the UQ
community and the S.E. Qld public. The 2021 tournament will offer 44 events
covering Open, 18 & Under, Special, Grade (A, A Res, B & C levels) and Seniors
(35/O, 40/O, 45/O, 50/O, 55/O & 60/O).

The Open, 18/U & Special events will be run using knock-out formats but the Grade
& Seniors events will use round-robin formats to ensure entrants get multiple
matches. The initial round-robin sessions for the Grade & Seniors events are all
pre-scheduled (check the List of Events on the printed entry form or look under
‘View Regulations’ if looking at the University Open on the Tennis Australia
Tournaments Website), so players know their initial time commitment when
entering. Obviously, players entering round-robin events need to ensure they are
not entering events with the same initial session times.

Entries close on Saturday, 3 July.

SECOND SEMESTER TEAM FIXTURES
The best option for players wanting a regular competitive game is to sign up for a
season of Team Fixtures.

In second semester, the Club will be running two internal competitions (UQTC
Tuesday Night Pairs Fixtures and UQTC Thursday Night Pairs Fixtures) and will be
entering teams in a Brisbane-wide competition run by the Brisbane Night Tennis
Association (BNTA Wednesday Night Pairs Fixtures).

The Team Fixtures application forms are available from under the clubhouse or can
be downloaded from the Club Website where entries can also be lodged on-line:
https://www.uqtc.org.au/form/2021-membership-and-2nd-season-team-fixtures-
application-form
The entry deadlines for First Semester Team Fixtures is Thursday, 29 July.

The Team Fixtures start on 17 August (Tuesday), 18 August (Wednesday) and 19
August (Thursday).

All new Fixture members must attend a grading session. Grading sessions will be
held on:
Monday, 26 August – 7 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday, 28 August – 7 to 9 p.m.

ANOTHER CLUB WEDDING
Past Club members, Ryan Carson and Jessica Rowley, tied the knot on 12 May.
This is what playing Tennis and Table Tennis at the UQ Tennis Club can lead to.

Ryan and Jess were Club members for around 10 years before heading off to
England in 2017. Both were Club Grand Prix Champions (Ryan 2009-2013 & Jess
2012-2013) and both received Club Service Awards in 2013. Ryan was a Club Vice-
President from 2013 to mid-2017.

Their original plan was to come back to Australia last year for a wedding in May but
then COVID intervened. So, if you can’t get back to Australia to get married, what’s
Plan B? Obviously, you head off to a remote mountain top in Scotland for a small
ceremony with a honeymoon around the highlands.

Congratulations, Jess and Ryan.

TENNIS OFFICIALS NEEDED
Court Monitors and Court Supervisors are needed for the 2021 University Open
Championships.
There is a shortage of Tennis Officials for tournaments in Australia and Tennis
Australia is recruiting through its on-line Community Officiating Program.
Officials are essential for making sure matches are played fairly and in good spirit and
for keeping players safe. The types of officials needed for tournaments are Line
Umpires, Chair Umpires, Community Officials and Referees.
For more information about officiating, go to:
https://www.tennis.com.au/learn/ballkids-officials-coaches-and-
volunteers/officiating/become-an-official
Community Officials start as Court Monitors (volunteer position) who help identify
on-court problems but can quickly graduate to Court Supervisors (paid position) to
help the Referee enforce the Rules of Tennis and Code of Behaviour as well as
resolving on-court problems. This is the ideal starting point for club players who
want to get more involved in helping their sport at the grassroots level.
The Community Officiating Pathway involves:
 Completing an on-line course - 4 modules covering (1) Rules of Tennis & Tennis
Etiquette, (2) General Principles of Officiating, (3) Safeguarding Children and (4)
  Court Monitor
 Becoming a Tennis Australia Officiating Member (Blue Card & National Police
  Check needed, volunteer category)
 Completing a practical assessment at a tournament to become an accredited
  Court Monitor
 Completing further assessments to become an accredited Court Supervisor
Any Club members who undertake the Community Officiating Course will have any
costs involved (e.g. National Police Check and TA Officiating Membership)
reimbursed by the Club provided they officiate at the 2021 University Open
Championships.
For more information about the Community Officiating Program, check out this
leaflet:

More information about the officiating process can be obtained by contacting
Cheryl Jenkins, the Officiating Development Coordinator at Tennis Queensland:

KEEP INFORMED
There are always lots of things happening in the UQ Tennis Club.
You can check out what is coming up on the Club Website:
https://www.uqtc.org.au
For programs, click the relevant information Tab and check for a story on the Home
page. For events, there will always be a story on the Home page.
Another way to stay informed is to like the Club’s Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/uqtennis/
Posters about events are also displayed on the Club Noticeboard under the
clubhouse and on the snap frames on the court gates.
Everything about the Club and its Programs can be found in the Club’s Information
Booklet, which can be viewed on-line:
https://www.uqtc.org.au/file/uq-tennis-club-information-booklet

UPDATING YOUR CONTACT DETAILS
The Club’s Management Committee goes to a lot of trouble to make sure Members are kept
informed about what is happening in the Club.
However, this is only possible if Members’ contact information is up-to-date. If you move or
change your e-mail address, please let the Club know.
As players are registered with Tennis Queensland using Tennis Australia’s My Tennis on-line
database, those with a valid e-mail address will receive an automated e-mail receipt from Tennis
Australia confirming their registration. They will also receive a notification about how to access
the on-line system to update their personal information themselves. This notice infers that
changes to contact information made on-line in this way will automatically be conveyed to the
Club. This is incorrect. Any changes must be notified separately to the Club, preferably via e-
mail to admin@uqtc.org.au.
