I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalms 91:2 Trinity Messenger May 2021 Trinity Mar Thoma Church 5810 Almeda Genoa Road Houston, Texas 77048 1
Trinity Messenger - May 2021 Message from the Vicar Dear Trinity Family, Greetings. It is a great feeling to complete two years of ministry in this parish and to enter into my third year with you. We are so indebted to you for the love, care and prayerful support that we are receiving through you in the last 24 months. The fellowship that we experience through our worship service and other gather- ings is so heart touching and inspiring. God has been so great to us all these days. Our new Vicar Rev. Sam K. Easow Achen is waiting for the visa interview. But Achen’s interview, as well as other achens, who are assigned to various parishes in USA, has been delayed due to this Covid crisis. Let us uphold Achen & family in our prayers. Let us also thankfully remember the great leadership that we re- ceived through Rev. Jacob P Thomas Achen & family. Please continue to pray for Jacob Achen as he is con- tinuing his Doctoral Studies along with his ministry as the Assistant Vicar of Primrose Mar Thoma Church, Bangalore. Most of our members have been vaccinated and are feeling more comfortable these days. But at the same time, things are not the same in many parts of the world, especially in India. Situations are similar to lock down and people are going through a big crisis. Even the vaccines are not available and the death rates are increasing. It has affected the social as well as spiritual life of people. So, it is our duty to pray for India. Our NAE Diocese has initiated a Covid Relief Collection to help the people in need. So I urge you to contribute generously to this collection to help our dear brothers and sisters in India. It is a good feeling to see that the number of attendees in Holy Qurbana Service is increasing. Hopefully in the coming days we can slowly have our organizational meetings and prayer meetings in person. I am prayerfully looking forward to that. Many of the Sunday School kids are waiting for the in-person Sunday school and we hope that it will also happen soon. At present we are continuing with our Zoom Meetings for our prayer meetings and I request your active participation in the same. I am assigned to serve the parish as the Vicar in Charge until Sam Achen joins our parish. It is a huge re- sponsibility and at the same time, a great honour to do the pastoral ministry in this parish. I am humbled by the faith shown on me by our beloved Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos Thirumeni, as he entrusted this great responsibility on me. I request your whole hearted support and prayers to lead this his- toric parish as I have entered the last year of my tenure here. I am so blessed to have the prayerful leadership and guidance from Rev. Oommen Samuel Achen. Looking forward to a blessed time in the days to come. Let us continue to uphold each family in our prayers. In His Ministry Roshen Achen 2

Trinity Messenger - May 2021 Secretary’s Note Hello & Happy May to Everyone, Let me start with a story from 1671 London on this May Day. A world-famous architect, Christopher Wren, was observing the work of 3 brick layers on a scaffold. One was crouched, one half standing and one standing tall. He asked the question, “What are you doing?” to which the 1st bricklayer replied, “I am a bricklayer. I am work- ing hard to feed my family.” The 2nd bricklayer, responded, “I am a builder. I am building a wall.” The 3rd bricklayer replied with a joy in his eyes, “I am a cathedral builder. I am building a cathedral to The Almighty.” 3 different perspectives while rebuilding St. Paul’s Cathedral: a job, an occupation, a calling. How do you and I think about everything we do on this International Labor Day? Is it work or a calling? Shouldn’t it be a calling? The United States has made big strides against the Covid-19 pandemic. Sadly, over 581,000 Americans have succumbed to this scourge. We must continue to be vigilant when we join in-person church services. Continue to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. Get vaccinated. Please stay home if you are feeling sick. Continue to pray for India, as our homeland struggles to contain the spread of this deadly disease. Please also contribute financially to help those in need. Jacob Achen, Rincy Kochamma, Harsha and Hannah have safely reached Bangalore to serve the Primrose Road Mar Thoma Church. Please continue to pray for their ministry. If you are yet to do so, please get your free copy of Following a Dream: A Collection of Memoirs. Read these memoirs and reflect on our collective history. Contact Mr. John Philip (Sunny Uncle) or Mr. Thomas K. Varghe- se (Kunjumon Uncle) to get a copy. Also, check to see if you are get- ting emails from Trinity. If not, please let me know. Please continue to pray for our Achens and their families, our church, the office bearers, executive committee, and me. Thomas [Thampi Sir]), the mother of Mr. Eason Thomas (ID#532, North Shore Area), received the heavenly call on Monday, April 19th in Kerala. Trinity Messenger - May 2021 Healing Hearts Ministry Healing Hearts Ministry was started in 2014 as a part of the 40th anniversary of Trinity Mar Thoma Church (TMC). It is an informal organization of TMC with voluntary membership and lead- ership. Late Mr. Mathai Mathew served as the initial coordinator, followed by Jojy Jacob, Mr. Oom- men Varghese and Maggie Oommen, and Anil and Premna Varghese. Jojy and Nissi Jacob cur- rently serve as coordinators. Healing Hearts Ministry volunteers specifically provide support to those who are sick with pray- ers and other special assistance. Even though the major focus is on serving the church members, the volunteers also extend their help to others who were going through difficulties in life. The Minis- try’s activities are coordinated through WhatsApp. Prayer requests are informed through WhatsApp and updated every week. A box and prayer cards are kept in the church foyer for the parishioners to submit their prayer requests. Current activities include: • Survivor witness: The survivors were given the opportunity at church to give testimony of their healing which strengthened them and inspired others on Jesus’ Healing. • House visits: assuring the sick that Jesus is with them and provided prayer. • During the house visits, volunteers shared snacks/meals in some cases. • Hospital visits: provide prayer and food for the sick & their family as a gesture of support. • Medical referral assistance to those who need it and those who do not have families in town with the help of health care workers of TMC. • Every third Sunday special prayer conducted during Holy Communion service. • Once/month Saturday Holy Communion Service. In some cases, provide transportation to church. • Communal meal/snacks are provided after the Saturday Holy Communion service. • Chain of prayer: total 8 groups pray for 15 minutes on every Monday from 8-10 am for those who are sick in our midst. • Organized Health Talk to keep members updated on health issues. Many people wish to have the church pray for them, especially in time of sickness and crisis. Healing Hearts Ministry strives to keep the highest degree of confidentiality in posting patient- related information and updates. We make sure not to publish the names and status of sickness without the knowledge of the patients. The Covid pandemic poses limitations of visiting patients at home or in hospitals. Considering these limitations, we can still cater to the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of those who are going through difficult times in their lives. Still, we are planning to continue what we are currently doing in addition to the following activities: • Increase virtual house visits to provide emotional and spiritual support. • Plan teams or pairs to help those who are bedridden, pooling our health care workers to relieve caretakers of chronically ill patients. • Plan health update talks on continued precautions after the Covid vaccine, Fall Prevention, Night Driving, etc. The Healing Hearts Ministry will grow and evolve in the way that God leads. All of us or our loved ones have experienced the healing touch of our Savior. It is this faith, the trust and healing of the woman who touched the garment of Jesus, that we try to assure those who are currently sick. We believe that, in spite of our limitations, Jesus heals the sick, gives His consoling presence in all physical, emotional, and spiritual problems that we face. 9
