2020 Census
The U.S. Constitution requires the United States to conduct a census of its
population every 10 years, which it has done since 1790.

The 2020 Census is as important as ever. Census results are used to determine the
number of seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representatives. It is also used to
allocate federal money to states, counties and communities to support schools, public
programs and infrastructure. Census data is used by government agencies and
businesses to make decisions, plans and policies.

Most people will be contacted by the U.S. Census Bureau by mail at their primary
residence sometime in mid-March asking them to participate on Census Day April 1.
People will be able to respond to the census online, by phone or by mail. Census forms
will be available in English and 12 other languages.

Provisions have been made to count service members, DoD civilians and their
families stationed overseas. Personnel on TDY will answer the census as if they are at
their home residence. Military personnel should answer the census from their current
residence, not their home of record.

The process will only take a few moments in most households. Census takers will
conduct in-person visits to select homes, as well as group residences, including military
barracks, college dorms, hospitals and prisons.

Responses to the census are safe, secure and protected by federal law. Information
gathered is used only to produce statistics. Information about specific households and
individuals is not shared with any other federal, state or local agencies.

   For more information, visit 2020census.gov.
