Chaplain Welcome & Introduction Hymn Look ahead to a life worth living, full of hope, full of faith, full of cheer, to a life that is made for giving without sin, without shame, without fear. Look ahead to the One who leads us, to the Lord who guides our ways. We shall follow, follow, follow, we shall follow Him all our days. Make a stand for the just decision, for the straight, and the true, and the right, take the hard choice in life’s ambition ‘gainst all greed and injustice unite. Stand in truth with the One who leads us, with the Lord who guides our ways. We shall follow, follow, follow, we shall follow Him all our days. Words & Tune: Kenyon Emrys-Roberts, 1923-1998
The Opening Prayer led by Head Boy, Joseph Gibbons God we pray: May you who leave this place: Take with you every blessing you have received here: Blessings of friendship Blessings of memories Blessings of knowledge And may you who leave here today to begin a new journey, leave us your blessing; your uniqueness, the mark you leave on this place that is only you. May you all be refreshed this summer, teachers, students, support staff, and parents, so when term begins again, You may all meet new challenges, new places, new people, with a bright and cheerful heart. May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen Farewell Address by the Deputy Head (i/c Sixth Form), Mrs Fe Beadnell
The Reading read by Head Girl, Emily Kelly Ecclesiastes 3. 1-11 A Reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. God has made everything suitable for its time. The Presentation This is a new tradition, to formally mark the transition from Barnardian to Old Barnardian. The names of all the Sixth Form Leavers are read out by their respective Housemaster or Housemistress. As their name is called they come forward to be presented with an inscribed hymn book by the Chair of the Old Barnardians, Mr John Hunter and the President of the Old Barnardians, Headmaster, Mr Tony Jackson.
The Valediction led by the Headmaster Jesus said, the most important commandment is this: ‘Hear, O my people, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Silence is kept Sixth Form leavers of Barnard Castle School, go forth into the world in peace; be of good courage; hold fast to that which is good; render to no-one evil for evil; strengthen the faint hearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honour all people, love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit; may you walk in friendship with God and your neighbour this day and always. Amen.
Hymn And did those feet in ancient time walk upon England’s mountains green? And was the Holy Lamb of God on England’s pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here among those dark satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, till we have built Jerusalem in England’s green and pleasant land. Words: William Blake, 1757-1827 Tune: JERUSALEM, C H H Parry, 1848-1918 Chaplain The Blessing Organ Voluntary ‘Toccata’ from the 5iéme Symphonie by Ch. M. Widor After the service, the Headmaster and the Upper Sixth exit and line the steps of Chapel. Parents and guests will then follow. Drinks and canapés will then be served on the Chapel lawn.
