Housing Selection 2018-2019 - Dean College
What is Housing Selection?

Housing Selection is an annual process for returning students to select their on-campus
accommodations for the 2018-2019 academic year. The following information will guide you on
how to complete the housing selection process. All information herein is subject to change.

How are Housing Selection Times Generated?

Housing selection times will be generated based on the criteria of class status. The criteria used
to determine class status are as follows:

Credits you are currently enrolled in plus your total credits earned.

                                    Rising Seniors: 84+ Credits

                                   Rising Juniors: 54-83 Credits

                                Rising Sophomores: 26-53 Credits

                                      1st Years: 0-25 credits

Students must fill out their housing application in order to receive a selection time. Times for
selection will be released on Friday, March 23rd. The housing application will close on
Wednesday March 21st.

When will Housing Selection Take Place?

Housing Selection will take place the week of March 26th for all returning students. Rising
seniors will be given the earliest time slots, followed by juniors, then rising sophomores and first
years.

Certain residence halls will only be available to students that meet certain credit criteria. Please
review this book carefully in order to understand the options available to you based on your
credits.

Residence Hall and Roommate Eligibility

You may choose to live with a student from a different class status. For example, a rising junior
or senior may choose to live with a rising sophomore, however they will not be able to select into
junior and senior housing. This means a rising junior or senior could not bring a rising
sophomore into a condo, Horne Hall, Clark, or Houston. This senior or junior would only be
eligible to select residence halls where all students are eligible to live.

                                                                                                   1
How do I log into MyHousing?

The housing application/selection all takes place in your MyHousing page. If you follow the steps
below it will bring you to your MyHousing page. This is the same page that you used when you
were first year students and completed your initial housing application.

*Remember, MyHousing is where you complete your housing application, roommate
selection, and then select your 2018-2019 housing assignment.

   • Log on to https://today.dean.edu.

   • Go to Your Personal Page and click on the My Housing tab

   • Click on the words Click Here

   • When you log in, you will see your name, student ID, and Dean email at the top. You will
also see your current housing assignment on this page.

Steps to Ensure Housing for 2018-2019

Step 1 – Complete the Returning Student Housing Application

Due Wednesday March 21st. You must log onto “My Housing” and complete the
Returning Student Housing Application to get a time for Housing Selection. This first step is
mandatory for all students.

Step 2 – Roommate Selection

Once you complete your returning student housing application, you will be able to form a
roommate group. You can form a roommate group with anyone that has completed the returning
student housing application.

Please note that if you are choosing someone in a different class year you may not have all the
residence halls available to you for selection. For more information please continue reading as
we go through each building’s criteria.

For more information on roommate selection please visit the Dean College Residence Life
YouTube video titled Selecting Roommates.

Step 3 – Pay the $250 Enrollment Deposit

Pay your $250 enrollment deposit by Monday March 19th via www.dean.afford.edu. All
students participating in housing selection must pay this deposit. This means in a roommate
group, all students must pay their enrollment deposit prior to housing selection. Failure to pay
this deposit may make the roommate group ineligible to select housing, and/or your selection
time may be forfeited.

Step 4– Participate in Housing Selection

Anyone in your group may log on to select, however we recommend that the
person from your roommate group with the best (earliest) selection time log onto
                                                                                                   2
“MyHousing” at their designated selection time to select for the group. You will only
see rooms that are available at the time of your selection.
Please note if a senior chooses to live with a sophomore, the senior will have the
best selection time, however they will only see housing options that both students
 are eligible to live in.
If a student has not paid their enrollment deposit or cleared financially for the
College they will not be eligible to participate in housing selection.
Step 5 – Register for Classes

This process begins on different days based on class status. Please be sure to speak
with your Academic Advisor for more information. Below is an outline of when class registration
occurs:

Tuesday, April 3rd Registration begins for rising seniors (84+ Credits)
Thursday April 5th is registration for rising juniors (54-83 credits)
Tuesday April 10th is registration for rising sophomores (26-53 credits)
Tuesday April 17th is registration for first year students (0-25 credits)

If you do not complete course registration by Friday April 27th you may lose your housing
assignment.

                                                                                                    4

Frequently Asked Questions

o How do I get a Housing Selection Time?
All students that complete their Returning Student Housing Application will receive a
Housing Selection Time. Find your selection time (Your Start Time) by logging on to your
MyHousing page through Today@Dean. Times will be posted Friday March 23rd.
o What is a Housing Selection Time?
Your Housing Selection time determines when you can log on to MyHousing and select your
desired room for next year. The earlier the time, the earlier you get to pick your room,
however there is criteria for each residence hall. Please be sure to review the housing
options below. You are not allowed to select prior to your designated time.
o How are Selection Times Determined?
Selection times are based on credits completed through January 2018 and current credits
registered for (Total Credits PLUS Spring 2018 credits). Selection times will be randomly
generated by class year. This allows rising seniors to select housing before all other class
years. Housing Selection Times will go live on Friday March 23rd.
o I have my time, now am I eligible to participate in Housing Selection?
In order to select housing, you must pay your $250 enrollment deposit via
www.dean.afford.com*, complete any outstanding conduct sanctions, and be cleared
financially. Enrollment deposit is due on Monday March 19th.
  *Payments can also be made:
In person at the Student Financial Planning Office
Via phone by calling the Student Financial Planning Office at 508-541-1518
Mailing a check to Dean College, Attn: Student Accounts
o I know who I want to live with; what do I do?
Form a Roommate Group via your MyHousing Page. In order to form a Roommate Group, all
students must have completed their Returning Student Housing Application. Click on the
Housing Selection tab on your MyHousing Page, there you will see roommates; click there
and type in your desired roommate’s name. Please note they must log on to accept your
request. (Remember, you must be in the same credit group.)
o I am going to be a senior or junior; can I live with a sophomore?
Yes, but you will see less options as you will no longer be eligible to live in Franklin
Commons, Horne Hall, Houston House or Clark House. These residence halls are strictly for
  junior and seniors.
o What if the person that I want to live with has a better time than I?
Students with the earliest time choose first, therefore, any students wishing to live together
will have their friend with the earliest time select the room. For example, if Joe (Selection
time 5:00pm) and Dan (Selection time 7:00pm) wish to be roommates and have already
joined into a roommate group together, Joe will be able to select the room for both
roommates because he has the earlier time. Once the room is selected by Joe, Dan will not
need to log on at 7pm to select a room. All members of a roommate group must meet the
criteria to live in the building (i.e. a sophomore may not be pulled into Horne Hall or a condo
even if there are people who want to live with her/him)
o What if I require a housing or meal plan accommodation?
You must complete the Housing Accommodations Request Form or Meal Plan
Accommodation Request Form; which are available on the Residence Life page on
Today@Dean. Submit the form, along with supporting documentation, to Accessibility

                                                                                                    6
Support Services. If your request is accepted, the Office of Residence Life will make a
housing placement for you in accordance with your documented need. You will not have to
   participate in Housing Selection.
If your request is denied, you should participate in housing selection. All students have the
right to appeal the decision to the Accommodations Appeal Board. Please note, students
must reapply for housing/meal plan accommodations each academic year.
o Can I give my selection time to my friend?
NO. Selection times are assigned to a specific person and are non-transferable.
o What if I am in class during my time?
If you are in class during your housing selection time that is not a problem; once you are out
of class you can log on and select your room.
o How do I select my Meal Plan?
Students will select their meal plan when they complete their Housing Application. All
students will be able to select an unlimited dining plan with Boomer’s Bucks. Boomer’s
Bucks range from $100-$500. Students living in Franklin Commons will be able to select a
meal plan that allows 100 swipes a semester.
o Does it cost extra to live in a single room?
Yes, a single is an additional $500 per semester ($1000 for the year). Please discuss this
cost with family members before selecting.
o Does it cost extra to live in Horne Hall?
Yes, a double is an additional $500 per semester ($1000 for the year). A single is an
additional $750 per semester ($1500 per year). Please discuss this cost with family
  members before selecting.
o Does it cost extra to live in Franklin Commons?
Yes, it costs $288 more per semester (with the 100 Meal Plan) to live in the condos
compared to a standard double room on campus.
o Do I have to fill a triple or quad to select it?
Yes. Triples and quads must be filled to select.
o What happens if my roommate’s plans change during the summer and he/she does not
  return in the fall?
The Office of Residence Life will reach out to the remaining roommates and give you an
opportunity to fill the spot. The time allotted will be based upon the number of days until the
fall semester. If you do not have a new roommate, the Office of Residence Life will look at
consolidating spaces and/or placing a new student in this vacancy.
o Can I live with an incoming first year student?
No, that is not an option. Most first year students will be assigned to first year-only housing.
o I will be a 21-year-old sophomore; do I have other housing options?
Yes, Franklin Commons, Horne Hall, Clark House, and Houston House are designated for
rising junior (54-83 credits) & senior (84 credits) students as well as other students who are
21 years of age and are seeking more independence, and may be seeking a smaller living
environment. If this describes you, please come by Chapman House so we can discuss this
  further.

o Can I get on a wait list if I don’t get my first housing choice?
Yes. You can add your name to a wait list on your MyHousing page. You can also visit us in
Chapman House to ask additional questions.

                                                                                                     7
o Is it possible to have gender-neutral housing?
Yes. Gender neutral housing is available in Franklin Commons, Horne Hall and Houston
House. Please refer to the hall descriptions for more information on the buildings.

o How do I change my status?
Are you a commuter who wants to live on campus? Are you a resident who wants to live at
home? If either of these situations applies to you, you must submit a Change of Residency
Status Form. Dean College is a residential college; thus, we don’t allow students to live
independently unless living directly with a parent or guardian. This form is available on your
MyHousing page under the application tab. Before completing this form please be sure that
you meet the criteria outlined on the form.

o What happens if I don’t participate in Housing Selection?
Before the end of the semester, come to Chapman House to choose your room. Any students
that have not chosen housing by the end of the semester will be placed in housing by the
Office of Residence Life. Remember the longer you wait the less choices you have for your
  housing next year.

o I’m trying to form a roommate group and I can’t find my friend’s name. Why not?

Your friend has not applied online. All students must complete the Housing Application
before a roommate group may be formed.
o I’m trying to choose my housing and I don’t see the building I want. Why not?

Only vacant, eligible rooms show as options. If you don’t see a building or a room, it means it
is full or you aren’t eligible. For example, if you wanted a room in Woodward Hall, and
Woodward Hall isn’t listed, it means all rooms are full. Similarly, Clark wouldn’t show up for
you if you are going to be a sophomore and/or you are a male. Franklin Common, Horne Hall,
Clark House and Houston House would not show up if all members in the roommate group
are not juniors or seniors. Additionally, if you are currently a junior or senior with a GPA less
than 2.0, you would not be able to see Horne Hall or Franklin Commons.
o I’ve missed all the deadlines. Now what? Will I be unable to get housing?

Do not worry! You will be able to get housing for next year. You will need to visit us in
Chapman House so we can work with you on your placement. We will also need to ensure
that you paid the enrollment deposit and did your housing application, and cleared any
   financial holds.

                                    Room Selection - Get Ready!
   1. Decide what housing you want, with whom you’d like to live and what is affordable.
   2. Create a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C.
   4. All roommates must go online to MyHousing and select each other. All roommates must
be mutual before anyone in the group can select a room.
   5. Set an alarm on your cell, computer, etc., to make sure you don’t sleep through or forget
about your selection day and time.
