               Lerninhalte

               This course centers on level-appropriate listening skills and English pronunication. Upon successful completion of this course,
               students will be able
               - to identify and correct major pronunciation problems in English (either "North American" or "British" English)
               - to improve their pronunciation of individual sounds or groups of sounds
               - to pronunce individual words correctly in connected speech
               - to speak English with proper intonation
               - to understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured
               - to understand extended speech when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly
               - to understand and comment on academic presentations in English
               **Dr. Prickett's section is an online international learning scenario: We will be working with students from Beit Berl
               College, Israel. The course content differs slightly from the above descriptors.**
               Students are required to submit assignments on a regular basis. Independent study is an integral component of the course.
               Students are strongly encouraged to attend the Independent Pronunciation Coaching. (Your instructor will provide you with
               information; see also the departmental website.)

               This online course will be largely based on asynchronous learning, but it will include a few synchronous elements. Please
               make sure you'll be able to meet up online once a month during course hours. The dates for these Zoom calls will be

               This course is designed to give an overview of the many ways literature has engaged with economic theories over the last
               centuries. The focus will be on literature that has been critical towards various aspects (like gender, class and race) of
               economic trends. Among other texts, we will read Herman Melville's 'Bartleby, the Scriviner', F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'A Diamond
               as Big as the Ritz', Charles Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol', Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility and Jean Rhys's Voyage in
               the Dark alongside critical literature. The readings will be divided into three sections: theory (Nov), novellas (Dec), novels (Jan-
               Feb). You will get assignments for each reading.

               Drafted under the chairwomanship of Eleanor Roosevelt and published on 10 December 1948, the United Nations
               Organization's Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a reaction to the atrocities of the Second World War. Despite its
               apparent newness of enshrining rights of the individual , the ideas and values it embodies have been developed through
               different stages over more than 2,500 years. Since the 1960s human rights has grown into a powerful legal and moral
               framework for advocacy groups and artists alike. Still, the equality of non-white human lives remains a faint dream.

               This course is designed to introduce students to the field of human rights, literary activism based in the human rights
               framework as well as critiques thereof from postcolonial angles. The mostly asynchronous course work will be formulated as
               individual research tasks and aims to foster students' ability to

               Although Foucault and Orwell have conceptualized surveillance as integral to modernity, surveillance has been racialized
               in a manner that they did not foresee: today’s seeing eye is white. Current discussions on surveillance mainly center on the
               ways, the citizen (often cast as a white male) is targeted by state surveillance, ranging from the NSA-revelations by Edward
               Snowden to the discretionary grip on personal data by the monopolies of social media and advertising companies such as
               Facebook and Google. Within the academe, surveillance studies often focus on the qualitative shift taking place in surveillance
               after 9/11, leaving the complex that enabled the post-9/11 surveillance-complex absent. Thus in this seminar, we will revise
               literature on surveillance and state power with the aim of placing questions of colonialism, race and empire at the center of
               analysis. Going back to the rich archive of surveillance studies in this political moment, we critically engage, rework, and
               perhaps resituate some of the key concepts of Critical Surveillance Studies. Charting this alternative genealogy of (state)
               surveillance disrupts the claim of newness often attributed to surveillance technologies and makes clear that surveillance
               culture often upholds strategies that first accompanied European colonial expansion that sought to structure social relations
               and institutions in ways that privilege capital accumulation and whiteness. By reading and discussing key texts from Critical
               Surveillance Studies, Black Surveillance Studies, and Race Critical Media Studies, students of this seminar will gain a
               deeper understanding and reflect upon some of the canonical thought undergirding cultural theory and history. Concerning
               methodology, we engage a set of crucial methodological tools established in the field: cultural and historicist analysis, visuality
               as method as well as a theoretically inflected perspective on technologies as cultural practices.

               Crisis talk and crisis-mongering often put forth the idea that the transformations we are witnessing today disrupt a state of
               stability and unfold as a singular event. They tend to conceal the violence and permanent exception that are the norm under
               global capitalism and our global geo-politics by singling out moments of presumed emergency and crisis from an already
               crisis-driven status quo. In this seminar we will critically engage with the concepts of crisis, risk, emergency, and the state of
               exception. We will conceptualize emergency not merely as a trope that is evoked but a way of grasping problematic events
               and of representing them in their apparent unpredictability, abnormality, and brevity. Students will receive analytical tools to
               connect crisis moments over time, ranging from the management of disease to national anxieties of terrorism.

               The rise of the selfie and the fixation on the face resides in what Zach Blas (2013) termed “global face culture,” a culture
               driven by impulses to know, capture, calculate, categorize, and standardize human faces. Similar to the measuring
               instruments built in the disciplines of racial science, today’s facial algorithms treat the face as a truth-telling and static
               repository. The singling out and capturing was believed to reveal someone’s real identity in the form of race, criminal
               character, moral flaws, and virtues. Contemporary facial recognition software used in biometric identification and mass
               surveillance continues to draw from scientific methods, which rested on the notion that an isolated representation of the face
               can give away a person’s truth. Recent examples for this are the building of algorithmic software that attempts to detect a
               person’s sexuality, criminal status or personality, including whether someone is a terrorist, by using a single facial portrait. In
               this seminar we will scrutinize the face from a visual culture perspective––and link dispersed visual representations of the face
               over time. Students will engage with a range of cultural technologies of the face (selfies, mugshots, the bourgeois portrait, the
               passport picture, facial algorithms…) and reflect on different modalities of face cultures.

               From the later 80s on, and without mainstream success, Thomas Ligotti has established himself as one of the foremost
               contemporary horror and weird fiction writers in English. Often dubbed "philosophical horror", his distinctive variation on
               supernatural horror breaks apart the very foundations of human existence. Human agency withers, sanity cracks, and reality
               variously expands and contracts as Ligotti's characters confront the absurdity of their consciousness and actions in abject
               spaces ranging from grimy cities, isolated houses, and decaying farms to what might or might not be dreams. In other stories,
               characters become involuntary votaries of strange knowledges palpably transgressing the confines of ordinary space and
               time, and sometimes whole communities see their customary world-view shattered to the core.

               In this class, we will read a selection of fiction from the first two of Ligotti's short story collections, Songs of a Dead Dreamer
               and Grimscribe: His Lives and Works . We will discuss leitmotifs of his oeuvre such as puppets, masks, out-of-place places,
               and dreamlike states, thereby pondering the philosophical significance which Ligotti gives them — from metaphysics and
               epistemology to nihilism. Also, we will on occasion dwell on Ligotti's reworking of tropes and themes culled from the tradition of
               horror and the weird. Later in the course, we will complement our readings in philosophical horror by discussing a text from the
               opposite end of his writing career, The Conspiracy against the Human Race: A Contrivance of Horror . Ligotti's book-length
               essay expounds his pessimism and other central concerns of his fiction on a more theoretical level. We will end the course by
               reflecting on the related topic of the craft and significance of horror literature.

               Please note that this course takes place synchronously. We will meet online Fridays 2-4 PM via Discord, an easy-to-use and
               free-of-charge software which, unlike Zoom, respects your privacy. We will use its chat function and, occasionally, voice chat
               to discuss the reading questions I post before each session. Also, announcements will be communicated to you via Discord.
               In conjunction with Moodle, the latter will be indispensable to our seminar. So, if you are disinclined to use that software, I am
               afraid there is no point in joining this class.

               The classes will take place online and will combine synchronous elements (probably biweekly) with asynchronous elements.
               This course explores how subjectivity has been presented in the British literature in the past 100 years. Although the main
               novels explored are from Britain, the theories we read and explore cross geographical and other borders to explore how to
               write affectively, and how to write about affect. We will explore what affect means for various different theorists. We begin
               by exploring modernist affects and the writings of Virginia Woolf – extracts from her autobiographical ‘A Sketch of the Past’
               and a novel Mrs Dalloway. We move on to post-war literature and postmodernism, and read Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso
               Sea and extracts from her autobiographical Smile Please. We then end up in the present moment, reading Joanna Walsh’s
               break.up and Zadie Smith’s ed essays. In the final part of the course, we explore contemporary terms like metamodernism
               and autofiction. Throughout the module, we will explore how subjectivity can be written affectively, and what is the role of
               authorship and lived experience in writing affectively and about affects. We wonder about whether literature as such is driven
               by a desire for affective connection. The aim of the course is also to highlight the continuities between feminist theories and
               affect theories, and postcolonial theories and affect theories. One of the central authors who will be studied in this module for
               understanding affect and its relation to feminism and postcolonialism is Hélène Cixous. Dozentin: Eret Talviste

               This course explores a diverse selection of British and US-American gothic writing, from the eighteen-century up to the
               present day. This course addresses key histories, themes, and conventions associated with the gothic, to encourage critical
               reflection of the texts. Special attention will be paid to psychoanalytical concepts such as the uncanny, the abject, and the
               sublime. This course will be online, it has mostly asynchronous elements with a few synchronous elements.

               "Online format: asynchronous with (voluntary) synchronous elements". Despite the fact that animals are a significant part of
               the Anglophone literary landscape, they are seldom the focus of our attention. In this course we want to read a wide ion of
               literary texts, mainly from the 20th century, that either prominently feature or deal with animals. Beyond popular children’s
               literature, animals are especially important as a trope in political narratives. Therefore, we will also read theory and non-fiction
               on the topic to explore human-animal relationships and to reconsider the role of animals in our cultural discourses. We will
               further address a great variety of issues where humans meet animals, such as zoos, meat production, animal testing, pets and
               others. Please be aware that this course covers issues such as the Holocaust, racism as well as colonial violence, and animal
               torture.

               Art Spiegelman: Maus (we will focus on the second part And Here My Troubles Began )

               J.M. Coetzee: The Lives of Animals

               Black Beauty is in the public domain, so there will be an e-book you can download in the Moodle course. The Lives of Animals
               is available as both hardcopy and in e-book format in the Potsdam library. If it is possible please purchase Maus (either The
               Complete Maus or And Here My Troubles Began ). Some excerpts from the text will be available as scans via Moodle.

               The course is designed as an introduction to generic aspects of English poetry since the late 18th century. It focuses on basic
               contemporary methods and approaches of analysis and introduces the students to aesthetic concepts in English poetry. In its
               survey character, this course will cover both highlights of British canonized poetry/movements and more marginal voices this
               approach will include inherent or explicit problematisations of aspects of e.g. gender and ethnic identity. This course will be
               a hybrid online seminar with synchronous and asynchronous phases. The online session with life meetings in a forthnightly
               rhythm. This will require you (!) to be online for a Zoom meeting during course times every 2 weeks! You should therefore
               make sure that you reserve the regular seminar slot for this course.
