2Covid -19, Sturry
We find ourselves in very strange times at the moment with what we once accept-
ed as normal life now being far from that with schools, churches, play areas, some
retail establishments, pubs, clubs, theatres, cinemas etc. closed, not being able to
meet with friends and family and just popping down to the shops now being a
lengthy and sometimes difficult and trying activity.
We are subject to information daily basis that is overwhelming and scary, we are
encouraging our elderly and vulnerable residents not to go outside, and we jump if
anyone near us starts to cough.
We have birthdays in solitude and all our VE Day celebrations were cancelled.
We have had confirmed cases in the parish, and we all felt the crisis on a more per-
sonal level when the Prime Minister was so ill, no matter what our political beliefs
may be.
But, with every frightening news report come stories of bravery about our NHS,
care home staff, essential workers who are gong that extra mile to ensure the rest
of us keep safe, are well fed and receive everything we need. We hear about the
volunteers who have come forward to shop, collect prescriptions, deliver food par-
cels and carry out any other tasks they are asked to do to help their community,
including your parish council team of staff and councillors who are working with the
Local Prescribing Link Worker to help identify and support our local residents at
risk.
We hear and join in with our neighbours at a safe distance on a Thursday evening
to clap, sing, bang saucepan lids, play instruments to say thank you to all these peo-
ple, but especially the NHS to show how much we really appreciate what they are
doing and sadly to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
So out of this terrible, global pandemic, we have rediscovered the community spirit
that was once so common in our towns and villages, we care about each other, we
look after each other, we are drawn closer together, even at a safe distance of 2m
and that’s something we can all be proud of for ourselves and our parish.
Once this is all over and we are out the other side, I just hope this newly rediscov-
ered camaraderie can continue and be built on for many, many years to come.
3PARK VIEW PLAY PARK

cise and meeting one other person from a different household, social

main closed.

ing rules apply, we also state that no dogs are allowed in to the cem-
etery , the Cemetery Regulations can be found on our website

5Trevor Pilbeam
New councillor to
Sturry Parish
Council
I originate from Canterbury and first moved
to Sturry in 1973 and lived in Cedar Road for 12 years where are 2
children were born. Due to family reasons we moved to Chartham
Hatch in 1985.We always said that it would be back to Sturry and we
did in 2016 moving into Bournes Close.
My career back ground has been in Catering having been Catering
Manager at Dulwich Hospital in London where I worked for 8 years. I
returned to Canterbury working for the Post Office Catering section
before moving to Canterbury Christchurch College as it was then.
On returning to Sturry and settling in, I decided that I would like to
give something back to the community where I live and had lived be-
fore. If you see my wife and I walking round the village don’t be afraid
to speak we don’t bite.
6VE DAY 1945
Victory in Europe (VE) Day on 8 May 1945 saw Britain and its Allies formally
accept Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender after almost six years of war.
At 15:00, Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced on the radio that the
war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany's surrender the day
before.
Spontaneous celebrations broke out across the country and the Queen, then
Princess Elizabeth, and her sister Princess Margaret, ventured out with a
group of friends to experience the excitement in London.
8VE DAY 75 YEARS ON STILL REMEMBERING
THEM
On Friday 8 May we paid tribute to the service and sacrifice of the entire
Second World War generation, from British, Commonwealth and Allied Forc-
es to evacuees and those who served on the home front.
There are many parallels between the struggles of the Second World War
and what we are going through today. We look to our Second World War
generation to learn from their experiences, and we continue our work to pro-
tect them from the threat we currently face.
Street parties took place up and down the country, with neighbours each
sitting on there front gardens to celebrate the day Europe finally had won the
war.

14MEANDERINGS“
A new history of the whole ecclesiastical parish was published in April”. it is
edited by Heather Stennett and K.H.McIntosh and published by the Society
of Sturry Villages. It contains many articles of interest including one about
the tram that was once proposed to run through the village to Herne Bay
and a replica of the Anglo-Saxon palace in front of the church. The search for
the Roman road and ford is followed by many photographs of the Secondary
Modern School pupils from 1936 onwards. A collection of letterheads from
Sturry’s former shopkeepers should revive many memories, while the Ed-
wardian houses in the parish receive special attention. A Broad Oak’s man’s
Huguenot history stands out alongside articles proving a veritable mine of
Sturry names for family historians. Three wartime accounts by survivors of
their services make tense reading.
A tremendous new book on Sturry and the surrounding villages has just been pub-
lished by The Society of Sturry Villages. Over 180 pages long, it is packed with stories
of local history, events and the people that made them! As we are not a commercial
site, you can find out how to buy a copy on the recently updated web-
site, sturryandbroadoak.co.uk. Or wait until the Sturry library reopens...

Be Connected
The Beaney is a therapeutic museum and we believe participating in creative activi-
ties can improve your health and wellbeing. At a time of social distancing and anxie-
ty about what the future might hold we want to invite you to come together as part
of this special Covid-19 social history project.
Whilst we might be separated from our loved ones and distanced from our neigh-
bour the ‘Be Connected’ project reminds us that our hopes and aspirations are one
of our strongest defences against the fear and loneliness that people might be fac-
ing at the moment.
Through this book you are invited to share your hopes and aspirations with your
neighbours. Share stories of kindness and friendship to remind us of the generosity
of spirit that hard times often inspire. This book will become a document of your
parish. Who you are today and the future you hope to create together.
How to take part:
Please put your first name ONLY, age and the street you live in at the top of the
page. Write about things that have inspired you throughout the Covid-19 Crisis and
how these things might have influenced your hopes and aspirations for the future.
Then Please send to Sturry Parish Council, 38 High Street, Sturry, CT2 0BD.
22We hope that the book is returned to The Beaney by 30 July 2020 in time for Na-
tional Day of Friendship. As well as being accessioned into the collection, excerpts
from the book will be used in the Museum Of You Exhibition at The Beaney. This
exhibition will bring together artworks by artists and community groups from
across the district soon after The Beaney reopens. We hope that you will come
and visit us then!
Thank you for taking part in this community project.
