FEBRUARY 2023 | ISSUE 21 WEEKLY WARRIOR Official Newsletter of Philomath High School Celebrating CTE Month: Industrial and Engineering Systems Previously known as Manufacturing Technology, the Industrial and Engineering Systems (IES) program at PHS is taught by Nick Traini. This is Mr. Trani’s sixth year at PHS and he has done an outstanding job at providing students with advanced skills in a CTE classroom. Students in IES learn a variety of shop skills and gain experience and knowledge using and operating industry standard equipment. The program encompasses three main areas; manufacturing technology, which focuses on welding and metal fabrication; drafting and design, where students learn how to use computer-aided drafting programs to design and interpret project plans; and machine tool where students learn the machining process of metal fabrication which focuses more on the precision side of fabricating. Distinguished Young Women With a mission to positively impact the lives of young women, Distinguished Young Women provides scholarships and life-enhancing experiences at the local, state and national levels. Along with cash scholarships, Distinguished Young Women participants are eligible for college-granted scholarships from colleges and universities across the country. The Distinguished Young Women program celebrates and cultivates leadership, scholarship, and talent. QuestBridge College Prep Scholars Program The QuestBridge College Prep Scholars Program is now open. Apply by March 22 for awards like full scholarships to college summer programs, up to $1,000 for application resources, essay feedback, programs, and more. Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program As one of the nation’s largest college financial aid programs in the country, the Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program is one of the major scholarship programs nationally that specifically assists high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives. The scholarships are funded by Horatio Alger Members who, like the Scholars, have experienced challenges but ultimately overcame them to become successful business and civic leaders.
Senior News - Scholarship Opportunities The following scholarships currently have few or no applications received. The deadline is Feb. 28! All applications are available through the Benton Community Foundation online portal. Harry and Lorraine Lagestee Scholarship: Tuition for a Philomath High School student with a cumulative grade point average at least 2.5 but not higher than 3.5 planning to attend LBCC or OSU. Recipient must have participated in at least two sports during high school. Ruth & Julian Adams Memorial Scholarship: Tuition for Benton County high school graduate studying journalism at an accredited institution of higher education. Robin V. Jensen Memorial Scholarship: Tuition for Benton County high school student pursuing a bachelor degree at an institution of higher education with an emphasis in Forensic Science or Criminal Justice. PHILOMATH CHEER Warrior Cheer hosted a cheer exhibition on Sunday, Feb. 5. Six local teams participated and Western Oregon University performed. The Warriors will be competing at the OSAA State Cheerleading Championships this weekend at Oregon City High School. They perform at 9:05 am. Western Oregon University performed at the exhibition.
