options

• Signpost the support available to students to help
them make informed option choices
HAPPY CARING EXCELLENTThe National Picture
• Significant and rapid change
• New grading system 1-9
• Demand for
• Increased literacy skills
• Increased knowledge
• Narrowing of the curriculum
• Core focus on EBACC:
• English Language and Literature
• Mathematics
• Science including Computer Science
• History or Geography
• Increased emphasis on a modern European Language
HAPPY CARING EXCELLENTThe National Picture – Progress 8
• Subjects are grouped into 'buckets'. English and Maths have double weighting.
• Students generally choose nine or ten subjects at KS4 at Malmesbury School,
some may study fewer
• Progress 8 is a measure of how well students progress compared to students
nationally with the same KS2 scores. A positive score indicates that students are
doing better than the average student with the same KS2 score.
HAPPY CARING EXCELLENTGrading
• Cambridge National uses the following grades:
Level 2 – Distinction* (D2*), Distinction (D2), Merit (M2), Pass (P2)
Level 1 - Distinction (D1), Merit (M1), Pass (P1)
A P2 is equivalent to a grade 4, a D2 is equivalent to a grade 7
• GCSE grades are 9-1
• Grade ‘4’ is considered equivalent to the old grade ‘C’
• For entry into Sixth form, Grade 6 is required in the
subjects that you wish to take, and Grade 4s or above in
Maths and English Language GCSE

HAPPY CARING EXCELLENTRoutes through Science
There are two routes through Science:
AQA Combined Science (Trilogy)
This leads to the equivalent of two
GCSEs and covers a combination of
all three subject areas.
AQA Separate Sciences
This leads to three separate GCSEs in
Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Both routes can lead to A Level Science and further
study such as medicine at university.
There is a video here explaining the information in the following slide in more detail.
HAPPY CARING EXCELLENTRoutes through Science
Most Year 9 students are currently following a transition
course which covers GCSE content but has been written
especially to meet the needs of Malmesbury School students.
Two small groups are working towards the AQA Entry Level
Certificate in Science as preparation.
Staff get a very good feel for how students are approaching
the GCSE content during this year and students will be re-set,
based on aptitude, attainment and progress, to start the
formal GCSE course in September of Year 10
Final decisions about whether an individual student will take
the combined or triple science route will not be taken until
they have completed year 10.
HAPPY CARING EXCELLENTThings to consider
• Do you enjoy the subject?
• How is the course assessed? e.g. 100% exam or 60% NEA
+ 40% exam
• Have you chosen a broad and balanced curriculum?
• Have you suitably challenged yourself?
• What are your aspirations and interests post 16?
