ARCHWAY SCHOOL PUPIL PREMIUM REPORT 2020-21

Covid-19 has had an impact on the funding projects we hoped to run over the last year and projects have been hard
to assess the impact of in light of a lack of national data. The pandemic has also increased a need for ‘catch up’
projects (to support and supplement the projects identified in the catch up funding), technology connectivity
(laptops and wifi) and a there is also an increased demand on counselling and mental health services.

In red are the updates in light of the school being partially closed from the 4/1/21, and the impacts this will have on
the plans.

The table below identifies the areas for development and desired outcomes.

 Barriers to future attainment
  A. Access to technology
  B. Mental health and wellbeing
  C. Weaknesses in core skills particularly Literacy leading to poor progress in English.
  D. Prior attainment gaps largest in reading
  E. Prior attainment Gaps in Maths
  F. High percentage of behaviour referals.
Desired outcomes for 2020-21 (desired outcomes Success criteria
and how they will be measured)
  A. All students having the ability to access All student having laptops and internet

access to counselling to counselling services.
  C. Improved progress of PP students To be above -0.25 (in light of GCSEs being cancelled this
is now a 2022 desired outcome)
  D. Improved reading ability for PP students Progress to be seen in reading tests over time
  E. Improved Maths ability for PP students Engagement in Hegarty Maths
Making curriculum suitable for access for all
  F. Increase aspirations of PP students More careers opportunities for PP
  G. Persistent absence by PP pupils drops by Improved average attendance from PP cohort
          1/3.

The last three years of results show that the programmes that have been put in place have not improved outcomes
for the students. There have been many successes with individuals and the PP spend improving their life chances
however the overall outcomes at a high enough standard. There was a relative increase in the progress for the 2020

                                     Online tutoring

Yr 7 Catch UP Premium Expenditure – In 2019/20 not all the KS3 funding was spent. In 2020/2021 the remaining
funds are being used on personalised support and Lexonic. Both of which will be funded by PP in the future

                                                                                                                 6
ARCHWAY SCHOOL PUPIL PREMIUM REPORT 2020-21

The following information outlines the directly funded interventions along with the impact of each across the
whole school, more programmes are planned and once they are confirmed this will be updated.

Intervention: English/Maths/Science
Online tutors

Context: Tutors are identified as one of the most successful interventions on the EEF website toolkit. The national
tutoring programme was funded by the catch-up funding but more session have been arranged and funded by PP. In
addition to the national tutoring programme, 1:1 tutoring is also being used to support some students.

More laptops and hardware has been purchased to support these programmes that have run with year 9-11
students, as the programmes are being run after school to ensure engagement. The programmes have an additional
administrative cost.

COVID – The programmes have been delayed from the intended roll out dates. Some programmes have continued
with students accessing the programmes from home, but the engagement is not as high as when the programmes
are carried out in school. Remote programmes will continue when the impact on the first cohort through has been
assessed.

We are using two providers Mytutor and Brilliant club. Both these providers assess impact after the programme of
15 weeks has been complete.

Laptop donation scheme.

Context:
To help provide a laptop and connection to every student that needs one. The laptop donation scheme only involves
a small amount of funding, mostly used to pay for donated laptops to be reconditioned and wiped ready for use by
students.

35 laptops have been donated by the community (correct at 20/1/21)

Intervention
Additional Counselling services:

Context:
It has been clear that the demand for counselling services since lockdown has increased beyond our current
capacity. More services will be brought in to meet the demand.

COVID – The services are still being sort but this is being delayed in the current situation.

Intervention:
The Brilliant Club

Context:
The programme has been provided to year 8 PP students over the last few years. The Brilliant Club aims to provide
opportunities for students from non-selective state schools to be proportionally represented at highly selective

                                                                                                                    7

Universities. It aims to ensure that students are being challenged in their learning and that their aspirations remain
high. Students undertake 6 University style tutorials, delivered by a PHD lecturer, and submit a final assignment.
Small group tuition, independent homework and feedback have been proven to be effective tools following research
undertaken by the EEF.

COVID – the 2019/2020 programme did not take place and the 2020/2021 is still being planned to be delivered
remotely, however this maybe delayed.

Intervention: Literacy
Whole School Reading Programme

Context:
Tutors read from an age appropriate text and students follow in their copy of the book using a ruler. 20 mins per day
in tutor time for year 7 to 10.

This whole school reading scheme will benefit all students but this will have a greater impact on the PP students,
giving them access to the reading material that they not have had access to. The purchase of the books is funded
from PP, as are the tests.

The biggest prior attainment gap between PP and non PP is reading so this will help address this difference.

The impact has been hard to measure due to lock down however analysis of reading tests shows that progress is
being made with the PP groups.

Information on the reading tests forms part of the barriers to learning document. This document is acted by a
number of stakeholders to intervene with individuals or small groups.

Intervention: Numeracy
Hegarty Maths Programme

Context:
Hegarty Maths is an online resource that helps students improve their Maths/numeracy. As students use it more it
identifies weak topics for the students to practise more in order for them to progress. The programme also helps to
support non specialists and inclusion staff to help them deliver a higher standard of maths education to all students,
but it will benefit the more vulnerable.

Intervention:
SAM learning

Context:
An online learning platform that has a proven record of improving performance. This is used mainly by Science as a
homework tool and used by students in inclusion.

Increase disadvantaged students’ progress. This is being monitored via SAMlearning intervention package, the top 20
high users had a positive progress 8 of +0.26 based on the 2019 results. All PP students used the system in 2018-

                                                                                                                     8
ARCHWAY SCHOOL PUPIL PREMIUM REPORT 2020-21

2019 with the assistance of the PP learning mentor. In lockdown 1 the use of Sam learning increased, with high users
showing a higher progress rate to non users (based on 2019 progress for 2020 results)

Intervention: Literacy
Lexonik and Lexonik LEAP : mostly funded from the KS3 catch up funding (2021/2022 this will be funded by PP)

Context:
This helps improve the literacy skills of students who enter Archway School below 90 KS2 Scaled score. Students
follow a six week programme and attend small group sessions on a weekly basis. Students are identified by English
and in Narrowing the gap meetings, reading tests and from the barriers to learning document.

Previous Impact:
The current year 7s that have completed the programme have shown on average a three year increase in reading
age. All year 7 PP students completed the programme in 2018-2019 and increased their reading age on average by
2.3 years (0.2 lower than previous year). The programme was also rolled out to other students identified by English
as needing reading support

The organisation of the programme has been taken on by the literacy lead. Additional to the use of KS2 data all year
groups will be having regular reading tests to identify the students that need the most support. The use of this
additional testing will mean more focus on the correct identification of the students for the programme and greater
analysis of impact of the programme.

Student Survey June 2019 – 88% have found the programme useful (up 6% on last academic year).

Intervention: Exam skills
Elevate education

Covid - This has been postponed in 2020 and 2021 however it is a successful programme which will be used again in
2022

Context:
30 year 11 students took part in a half day workshop focusing on improving examination techniques. The sessions
focused on Memory Mnemonics and Ace your Exams.

Impact:
Feedback from students was positive highlighting improved self confidence in revision techniques and ideas.

Low cost, medium impact

Student Survey June 2019 – 92% have found it to increase their confidence in revision (100% last year).

Intervention: careers
Young Entrepreneurs Competition – Dragons Den

Covid - this has been postponed in 2020 and is likely to be postponed is 2021 – although an alternative online careers
day is planned.

                                                                                                                      9
ARCHWAY SCHOOL PUPIL PREMIUM REPORT 2020-21

Context:
80 year 9 students, combination of all the pupil premium students and some non-pupil premium higher prior
attainers, have been identified to participate in a first round competition to create an innovative business idea that
could be promoted and developed to the business sector. Research indicates that the average recorded vocabulary
for children from socially deprived background is significantly lower than those from professional families. The Young
Entrepreneurs Competition was specifically targeted to improve self-confidence, teamwork, leadership and oracy
skills as all groups had to lead presentations for their innovative business idea. This took place in March 2019.

Student Survey June 2019 – 75% found the programme useful (73% last year)

Impact:
The group came third in the county, continuing the success of previous years.

2019/20 Plans and impact.
The format will be slightly different this year with lesson students doing this programme (60 students) but increasing
the percentage of PP students undertaking the day. Impact will be measured by survey.

Intervention: Mental wellbeing and confidence
Ernest Trust team building

Context:
Year 7 PP students have a day of team building and confidence building carrying out various outdoor activities.

Covid - this has been postponed in 2020 and is likely to be postponed is 2021

Impact:
All students enjoyed the day and were very positive about the experience. The long term impact is not going to be
high but it gave students that might not have the opportunity to take part in outdoor team building and
communication activities.

Student Survey June 2019 –100% (not run last year) found the programme useful.

2019/20 Plans and impact.
The programme will run again in 2020 in the same format. Survey again will measure impact.

Intervention: Careers/aspirations
1:1 Careers interview

Context:
To ensure every PP year 10 and 11 student has a 1:1 careers interview. The careers programme includes other
opportunities for PP students and raising aspiration.

Impact:
Increase aspiration and help students identify what they need to do in school to achieve their goals. Help with
applications for college to lower chances of NEET..

                                                                                                                    10
ARCHWAY SCHOOL PUPIL PREMIUM REPORT 2020-21

In 2019/2020 all year 11 and 10 students had a careers interview. Covid – more careers interviews have been carried
out remotely, more than what would have been possible while students were in school
