General Information

Venue
Our Summer Camp for 2015 will again be at Rathkeale College, located in a beautiful rural
setting, a short drive from the centre of Masterton. It worked really well as a venue last
summer, with more classrooms, the huge auditorium, and the larger dining room. In addition,
there are also a number of common rooms available for families to socialise. Having the food
prepared by the chef on site is great, and there was fantastic feedback on the quality of food.
There are a swimming pool, tennis courts, and LOTS of room for biking around.
Summer Camp is a great environment for learning, sharing, and music enrichment - fun
classes, evening concerts, and public performances.

Accommodation
On-site accommodation is available in the school hostels, or camping on the school field if you wish to
bring a tent or caravan.

At Rathkeale, there are two hostels available, each with a number of wings. Each wing has a
combination of a small number of closed rooms, with the remaining beds in the wing divided up by
side partitions and open to a corridor. Please note that Rathkeale is a boys’ boarding school with 2-
bed cubicles, so hostel accommodation is much less private than at the girls’ school. It is not possible
for each family to be allocated a closed room – these are prioritised for families with small children.
The cubicles can have some privacy if a blanket / towel / sheet is hung over opened cupboard doors at
the entrance to the cubicle. If you would like to share a wing with families you know, please tell us the
names of the families in the comments field when you register. A self-catering option will be available,
with access to common rooms that have a kitchenette with a sink, an extremely tiny fridge, and a
microwave, but no oven or stove top. Please note that if you are camping, there is likely to be a fire
ban, so no naked flames. If you are going to self-cater, please bring chilly bins or other to help keep
your food cold, as fridge space is extremely limited.

If tenting or caravanning is not an option for you, and you want more privacy than can be offered in
the school hostel, there are motels in Masterton, a ten minute drive from Rathkeale.
Off-Site / Day Visitors
There is a camp charge for all-day visitors not staying on site. It covers camp administration and use of
amenities. Fees must be paid at time of online registration.

Camp Arrival / Departure
On-site registration will commence at 1 p.m. on Wednesday 14 January 2015. Camp concludes at
around noon on Monday 19 January 2015 (Wellington Anniversary Day) after the Monday Concert,
which is just before the Play-out. Lunch will not be available on the Wednesday, but will be available
on the Monday if it has been ordered at online registration.

Child Supervision
Please ensure that children are adequately supervised at all times.

Camp Roster
Being on the duty roster is part of attending Summer Camp and where you have a wonderful
opportunity to meet the Suzuki community (that usually includes people from out of Wellington and
from overseas). The light duties include Meal Ticket Check, Concert Door Monitor, and Supper Helper.
Notification of duties will be given out at the camp registration desk and will also be posted on the
information board.

Viola for Violinists
We are again offering a class called Viola for Violinists - four hours of group classes! As well as being a
beautiful solo instrument in its own right, the viola is the essential middle voice in string quartets,
ensembles, and orchestras, and will give our young musicians an important new skill. We are building
towards a Suzuki String Quartet programme for our teenagers and this is the first step.

The class will again be taught by Professor Donald Maurice, New Zealand School of Music viola teacher
and proud Suzuki dad. Donald brings a wealth of performance and teaching experience to this project,
and we are extremely fortunate to have him on our faculty!

The requirements are that the student must be in Book 4 or above, and must be playing a full size
violin. Instruments will be provided.

Fee: $40.00
Minimum enrolment: 4
Maximum enrolment: 10

Double Bass Experience 
This year we are again trying something new - offering four hours of group classes for the double bass!

The requirements are that the student must be in Book 4 or above - on any instrument. Consideration
must be given to the student’s height as the instruments are very large! We suggest students should
be at least 10 years old. Instruments will be provided.
Fee: $40.00.
Places are limited to 8.

Liability
Participation in the Wellington Branch’s Masterton Summer Camp is undertaken at your own risk. To
the extent allowed by law, the Camp organisers will not be liable for any damages resulting from, or in
any way connected to the Camp.

Cancellation
There will be no refunds for cancellation after enrolment closes.
