Wheels in Motion - Vol. XI, Issue 33 - March 29, 2019
A Message from President Randy
By Randell W. Thompson on Wednesday, March 27, 2019
Dear South Brunswick Island Rotarians!
Another great meeting this past week! Attendance was great, and our speaker
did a great job explaining his new role as the Managing Editor at the Brunswick
Club Meeting Beacon. As normal our Happy Dollar Time was most enjoyable. Many of our
members shared happy events going on in their lives and in our community.
South Brunswick Islands Even Vince took a few moments to read an email sent to Sam earlier this month
Meets at Ocean Ridge Plantation, bring to his attention that Villanova was misspelled in a recent article. It made
Tamers' Restaurant for a light moment for all of us. Thats because we know you just cant
351 Ocean Ridge Pkwy SW misspell Duke or Carolina!

Time: Friday at 07:30 AM We did have a number of members absent due to attending Rotary PETS in
Greensboro, NC. Well be hearing all about it this coming Friday as the Clint and David show
presents information about our steps forward in the coming year. Looking forward to having them
Volume XI, Issue 33 share on their experiences this past weekend as well as charting our Club's future.
Friday, March 29, Sam Hickman was our speaker this past Friday. The Brunswick Beacon, a weekly newspaper in
Shallotte with a circulation of more than 10,000. Hickman grew up in Brunswick County and attended
2019 Supply Elementary, Shallotte Middle and West Brunswick High schools. Hickman attended East
Carolina University and worked as a sports correspondent for the Beacon for three years during his
Welcome: President Randy college years.
Thompson After graduating from ECU following the greatest six years of his life, Hickman began working at the
Beacon in 2013 as a part-time obituaries clerk. Less than a month after he started as an obits
Invocation & Pledge of Allegiance staffer, Hickman was promoted to a staff writers position. After three years working as a staff
writer, Hickman briefly left the Beacon and explored an opportunity with the Brunswick County District
Breakfast Attorneys Office.
Sgt.-at-Arms: Introduction of It was there when Hickman realized he was a true newspaperman. He returned to the Beacon in May
Visiting 2017 as the papers sports editor, a job Hickman dreamed about securing since his days at West
Rotarians & Guests, Fines & Happy Brunswick High School. He loved his sports job, but when the editors position came available a
Dollars month ago, Hickman simply couldnt pass up the opportunity to lead the newsroom of the paper he
grew up reading.
Rotary Moment
Hickman married his wife, Maggie, in December 2013 and they have two children, 2-year-old son
Announcements Huck and 11-month-old daughter Winnie Sue. The couples first child is their now-5-year-old
bulldog Heyward.
Program: President-Elect
David Vanasse and President- Remember our upcoming Golf Tournament, your support is important to our Club goals. Lets turn
Nominee Clint Berry report on out this Friday to support Clint and David as they present.
