HIST 150BA • CRN 27083 THE WOMEN IN U.S. HISTORY YOU
                              SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
This course seeks to make women visible in U.S. history for their achievements, tenacity
in the face of discrimination and brilliance. We will discuss U.S. women of a variety of
ethnicities and races who were agents of social change. These women worked to reshape
society to be more inclusive and compassionate. We will examine the biographies and
accomplishments of selected women in the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries who
should not be left out when we tell this nation’s history.
                              Objectives: Students will...
                               - Identify the contributions of women writers and activists who changed life in the U.S.
                               - Analyze the contributions of women in business and the arts who changed life in the U.S.
Tuesdays - Learn the history within which women crafted their roles through primary source

REL 150A • CRN 27053 DISCOVERING BABYLON
After lying buried in the ground for over 2000 years, the remains of Babylon were dug up
by archaeologists around one hundred years ago. Yet the city remains enveloped in a web
of myths, which occupy a unique place in our culture. The city is known for the Tower of
Babel and through expressions such as the “confusion of tongues” and the “Babylonian
captivity.” It has been associated with impressive walls and luxurious gardens; yet,
shortly after its final flowering, this ancient metropolis was buried and forgotten. Instead,
Babylon’s reputation as a city of excesses and evil took over, shaped in part by the stories
of the Bible. This course explores Babylon both as a cultural entity and a historical city and
ends with the question of why Babylon continues to fascinate us.
                              Objectives: Students will...
                               - Describe portrayals of Babylon in the Bible, both as city and as symbol of an evil empire.
Mondays - Trace depictions of the Tower of Babylon in visual arts and other cultural expressions.
                               - Outline the archaeological discovery of ancient Mesopotamia.
April 11, 18, 25 & May 2 - Understand basic events in Babylonian history.
1-3pm - Analyze the encounter between the Babylon of received tradition and historical Babylon.
Instructor: Dr. Rannfrid Thelle, Associate Professor of Religion, Department of History, Wichita State University

                              THE GEOGRAPHY OF AMERICAN ELECTIONS
Every presidential election, the country becomes obsessed with a fight between red
states and blue states. The outcome is important, but the political fabric of the country is
much more subtle and interesting. In this class, we will look at the geography of American
elections, exploring why people live where they do, what all those governments are on your
property tax bill, how national elections are actually very local, and why Elbridge Gerry’s
salamander is even more relevant two hundred years later.
                              Objectives: Students will...
                               - Identify population movement trends in American history.
                               - Distinguish between the different layers of local government and their purposes.
                               - Understand how elections are administered and where district boundaries fall.
Instructor: Dr. Brian Amos, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Wichita State University
