When: 3:35 p.m. – 3:55 p.m.
Speaker: Samantha Medlock, North America Head of Capital, Science & Policy, Willis Towers
Watson
Description: 2017 was the costliest year on record for US disasters, revealing underlying gaps
between owners of risk – primarily communities and public treasuries – and the sources
of risk transfer and capital to mitigate risks and “Build Back Better”. Advancements in
analytics, standards, and legal duties of care are activating corporate and municipal risk
managers, as well as infrastructure owners, to invest in resilience. Meanwhile,
uncertainties in the timely availability of public funds prompt renewed calls for private
sector engagement, particularly for insurance, insurance-linked securities, and innovative
finance approaches. This presentation will examine Parametric Insurance and
Resilience Bonds as models of public and private sector partnership to reduce disaster
risks and costs.
