Worship Bulletin for October 31, 2021
                        Reformation Sunday

We acknowledge that we live and work on the unceded ancestral lands of the
Coast Salish people and pay our respects to elders past and present.
Liturgy means “the work of the people,”
and we pray that this “work of the people” is a blessing to you this day.
Our liturgy consists of four sections: the Gathering,
the hearing of the Word, sharing of the Meal
and the Sending out to share the Good News.
Please prepare a piece of bread/cracker and a
serving of juice or wine for our Meal.

GATHERING
The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

PRELUDE – Lord Keep Us Steadfast in your Word, ELW #517

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

In honor of Lutheran Campus Ministry, we are asking for donations to the UW
Food Bank (not to be confused with the U District Food Bank). You can bring your
donations to the church and Chelsea will make sure they are given to the UW Food
     Bank.

In addition to your regular financial support of ULC, every month ULC collects a
special offering for an organization that we believe aligns with the values of God’s
kingdom. For the month of October, our special offering will go to the
     SHARE/WHEEL.

We will have a Trunk or Treat on Halloween in our parking lot. We ask cars to be
set up by 3:00 p.m. and trick or treaters will start at 3:30. Decorate up your trunk,
come in costume and have fun handing out treats and meeting our neighbors.

ULC still has openings for member to make use of our agreement with Tech
Trainers. If you need computer help, contact the church office for information on
     how to sign up.

THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the fountain of living water, the rock
who gave us birth, our light and our salvation.
     C: Amen.
P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy
and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters
and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took
delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family.
Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river
your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and
your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise
     and servants of all.
Worship Bulletin for October 31, 2021 Reformation Sunday
We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for
the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives
with your forgiveness, grace, and love.

To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the
    Holy Spirit, now and forever.
    C: Amen.

OPENING HYMN – Amazing Grace, ELW #779
Worship Bulletin for October 31, 2021 Reformation Sunday
GREETING

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all.
      C: And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

      LL: Let us pray together:

C: Gracious God, we thank you that your Holy Spirit renews the church in
every age. Pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them
steadfast in your word, protect and comfort them in times of trial, defend them
against all enemies of the gospel, and bestow on the church your saving peace,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING – Jerimiah 31:31-34
The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the old covenant it will expect the
people to live upright lives. To know the Lord means that one will defend the cause of the
poor and needy (Jer. 22:16). The renewed covenant is possible only because the Lord will
forgive iniquity and not remember sin. Our hope lies in a God who forgets.
The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with
the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with
their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt — a
covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the
covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will
put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and
they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other,
"Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says
the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

      L: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word.
      C: Thanks be to God.
PSLAM HYMN – A Mighty Fortress, ELW #504

SECOND READING – Romans 3:19-28
Paul’s words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and other
Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of
the law. We are brought into a right relationship with God through the divine activity
centered in Christ’s death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and
empowers our faith in Jesus Christ.
Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so
that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to
God. For “no human being will be justified in his sight” by deeds prescribed by the law,
for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.
But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by
the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all
who believe. For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God; they are now justified by God’s grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in
Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective
through faith. God did this to show God’s righteousness, because in divine forbearance
God had passed over the sins previously committed; it was to prove at the present time
that God alone is righteous and that God justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. Then
what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the
law of faith. For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by
the law.

      LL: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word.
      C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
GOSPEL John 8:31-36
Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual realities known through his word. He
reveals the truth that sets people free from sin.
Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word,
you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you
free." They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been
slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, 'You will be made free'?"
Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to
sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place
there forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
P: The Gospel of the risen Christ.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON

HYMN OF THE DAY – The Church of Christ in Every Age, ELW #729

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We believe in the God of love, who is the loving Creator of heaven and earth,
and the source of all love among humankind.
We believe in Jesus Christ, the beloved child of God who was filled with
  God’s Spirit,
     Who by the power of this Spirit loved others as God is love;
Who demonstrated his love for all by laying down his life for the salvation of
  the world;
     Who was raised by God to dispel all fear of death;
Who breathed his Spirit on his disciples and gave them the power to love; and
Who will come again to reveal to all people the eternal love of God.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the inspiration and motivation for all people to
  love,
     Who enables us to know the love of God and abide in God’s love;
     Who empowers us to love one another with God’s love;
Who forgives our sins as we forgive one another; and
Who brings God’s love to completion by casting out all fear among us.
We have known and believe this love of God so that we may be the light of
God’s love in the world. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE PEOPLE

      LL: Hear us, O God.
      C: Your mercy is great

SHARING THE PEACE

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
      C: And also with you.

                                                                                                   MEAL
God feeds us through the presence of Jesus Christ.
Lutherans believe in the real presence” of Christ in communion,
so it is more than a memory of a past event or a symbol of a belief. It is
a mystery just how Christ is present “in, under, and through” the elements of bread and wine.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING/EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
P: Creator God, you have created a world in which all might be satisfied by your
abundant blessings. You dined with Sarah and Abraham, promising them life. You
fed your people Israel with manna from heaven. You sent prophets to remind your
people that they should be especially mindful of the widows and orphans in their
community. In the fullness of time, you sent Jesus to proclaim good news to those who
live in poverty, to dine with outcasts and sinners, to live simply and sustainably, to call
those who are wealthy to a new way of life, and to cancel the debts of those who are
  enslaved by such bondage.

To model this way of justice and peace, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and
gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat. This is my body given for you. Do this
   for the remembrance of me.

In the same manner, Jesus took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink,
saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people, for
the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

remembering how Jesus sacrificed his life in order that we may live more fully in his
grace, we rejoice in his resurrection and accept the new life that we all have received in
the way that we have love for one another. As we live into this future, we await the
day when all the peoples of the earth will come together with hearts yearning for
   justice and peace.
Send now your Spirit so that all who partake of this holy meal and are set free from our
sins may be filled with the faith and courage to give of our lives and our resources for
the common good of all people as we follow in the way of Jesus, through whom all
glory and honor are yours, both now and forever.

  C: Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as
we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us
from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
   Amen.
COMMUNION BLESSING
P: May the body and blood of Jesus, our Christ, be the liberation and inspiration
that we need to give of our time, talents, and treasures for the common good of all
   people.
   C: Amen.

                                                                                      SENDING
God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER
      LL: Let us pray together:
C: We thank you, God our host, for inviting us here to taste the future when
you will feed all the hungry at your table. Keep this hope alive in us and in our
communities, so that we might bring hope to a suffering world, in the name of
      Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

BLESSING
P: Signed and sealed by the Holy Spirit, you are Christ’s message of love for this
troubled world, written by the same Sender. May our Lord Jesus Christ and God our
Loving Parent, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope,
☩ comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.
   C: Amen.
DISMISSAL

LL: Go in peace. Set your hope on Christ!
       C: Thanks be to God
