ASK: The Third Sunday before Advent – Remembrance Sunday
Dear friends,
Friends old and new, this time last week we were sort of expecting it, the second
lockdown that is, but we didn’t quite know what to expect. I really thought the
Government would wait until after the services of remembrance. In anticipation I
prepared for both options and so we have a sermon based on Matthew 25: 1-13
and that wonderful poem The Soldier by Rupert Brooke with the Act of
Remembrance for you to follow too. I hope you take your time and enjoy which
ever option you choose this morning. Please note the information below about
the Toy Service and how you can still make a gift to children this Christmas.
Finally I want to encourage everyone to follow the new regulations and then we
might still be able to enjoy a relatively normal Christmas, well the new normal.
So keep safe and keep well.

ASK: The Second Sunday before Advent
Dear friends,
"The Kingdom of God is like..." Matt25: 14-30
When you think about the Kingdom I wonder where your mind goes? Is it to a
heavenly place in the future or is to what is going on right here and right now.
When I ask myself that question I am drawn to the lockdown and our response to
it. The steadfast dedication of all the frontline workers, from the surgeons to the
cleaners, the cashiers to the delivery drivers, the shop workers to the bus drivers,
every single person who is ‘carrying on’. I use that phrase because I am reading a
book at the moment titled BLITZ, the story of 29th December 1940 by Margaret
Gaskin, and I am shocked by what the people of London had to cope with after

the harshest night of bombing in the war. However bad life gets people find a
way to ‘carry on’, they did then and we do now. Living in the midst of covid-19
is a backdrop to the Kingdom of God, because the Kingdom is both place and
time, now and future. We can bring the Kingdom to life by what we do for
others, so let’s do that and carry on in love and service. The end is on the
horizon, thanks be to God. Keep safe and keep well.

ASK: Christ the King Sunday

Dear Friends old and new,
friends, ‘then there were three’, potential vaccines that is, and we are all waiting
with baited breath to be called to receive one. You may remember last week that
I mentioned the book Blitz, about the night of December 29th 1940. This week I
read about a small team at Oxford University working on the development of the
bacteria-killing properties of ‘Penicillium notatum’ extracted from fungus. The
technician Norman Heatley had spent Christmas day [1940] trying to extract
enough active ingredient for the first human trials of the antibiotic ‘penicillin’ to
begin in a matter of weeks. What a wonderful testament for the science
department at Oxford University and their involvement with the development of
life saving medicines during the past eighty years. Long may they continue.
I have been asked to remind you and to say thank you so far for the toys and gifts
that you are sending for the young carers in Enfield. You may still drop them into
the centre at 137-143 Baker street, Enfield, EN1 3JL, up to Monday 6th
December, between 9.00am and 5pm. The staff there are astonished at your
generosity and want to say thank you. If you have gifts that need collecting
please call: 0208 366 3677. Our own grandchildren have acted as carers over
many years and been involved with Young Carers in Kent. I know the enormous
debt we owe them.
On Tuesday 24th the funeral of Wendy Wilson will take place at Enfield
Crematorium when we will say goodbye to a friend and fellow pilgrim of St
Mary Magdalene. I remember clearly the kind and gentle lady who came with us
to Launde Abbey and participated in our efforts to plan how we are to move on.

Little did we know then how much change would be happening due to the corona
virus and Gordon moving on to Rochester.
Well here we are, the last Sunday of the liturgical year, its time for us to write
down our New Year resolutions, for both our Spiritual and every day life. We
have much to look forward to in the weeks ahead and pray that we will be able to
celebrate as we all wish to do. So then let us work together doing all we can to
keep to the rules and keep safe and keep well.

ASK: The First Sunday of Advent
‘What are you waiting for’
Dear friends, friends old and new, on Advent Sunday we can wish each other a
Happy New Year as we begin the new liturgical Year, B. Do you have any
resolutions? I do, I resolve to be the best I can be at ministering to the people of
St Mary Magdalene until such time as a new vicar is found. We are all waiting,
waiting for a new leader and waiting for our Lord's return. While we wait I will
try to keep the faith and do all I can to serve, to grow in faith and live the Gospel.
What will you be hoping and praying for?

Weekly online Services
We envisage that these will continue for the foreseeable future and a big thank
you to those who have volunteered to read for us in these services. For your
information, these services are being visited around 130 – 180 times per week, so
is a vital ministry that includes others outside our usual congregation.

Concert Programme 2020
Cancelled until further notice

Coffee Morning Rota 2020
As you all know Coffee Mornings from March were all cancelled, and I do not
think it would be appropriate at the moment for them to take place so until
further notice they are cancelled. As you know the takings from the coffee
mornings are to be used eventually for a new kitchen in the Vestry and because
of the virus we have potentially lost £1,800. I was wondering if you could
manage to put say £3 per person x 9 in a pot and eventually bring it to the next
morning whenever that will be. I know times are hard but we should keep God’s
house in good order and this would be a wonderful sign of our love for St Mary
Magdalene’s.

Sunday openings for December
We are pleased to announce that following lifting the latest Lockdown we will be
resuming our Said Eucharist service on Sunday 13th and 27th December. Going
forward these services will be on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month and the
remaining Sundays we will be open for private prayer between 10am and
12noon. Except for 20th December.
20th December: we will not be open in the morning because, at 4:30pm, we will
be having a special Carol Service. We have space for around 54 ‘bubbles’ so
space is limited. Members of the choir and a few guests will be singing,
congregational singing is not permitted.
Christmas Day: we will be having a Said Eucharist Service on Christmas
Morning at 10am.
8Christmas Appeal – Presents for Young Carers
We are asking for donations of NEW, unwrapped gifts or toys for
young carers aged 5 -18 who may not otherwise receive a gift. These
will be given out to our Young Carers across the borough before
Christmas.
Many Young Carers will be facing a cold, hungry Christmas with little or no gifts
coming their way. You can help to change that!
If you would like to help, the next time you are in a supermarket, Argos or a toy
store, please pick up something small and drop it to the centre.
Although we are still closed to the public there are staff in the centre
Monday – Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm. Just press the buzzer and we will
come to the door. If you have gifts that need collecting please call:

9Advent Book from The Bible Reading Fellowship
This year’s Advent book is by Gordon, called ‘At
Home in Advent’. This follows on from his previous
Lent title ‘At Home in Lent’.
