ARTS
Enriching Our Community
Through The Arts
Pentangle Arts has been at the heart of a thriving arts
and cultural sector in the Woodstock, Vermont area
since 1974. Its mission is to facilitate and present arts
programming that inspires, educates, and entertains
audiences of all ages.
Pentangle cultivates an appreciation of the arts and the
artistic process through Arts in Education programs,
live musical theater, feature films, concerts, and
visual art festivals. Pentangle also supports the area’s
commercial and cultural vitality by presenting events
and productions that attract visitors and residents who
shop, dine and stay in the area.
In addition, Pentangle Arts manages the iconic
Woodstock Town Hall Theatre, the town’s primary
community and gathering space. It is a place where
local schoolchildren have seen and participated in
their first live productions; where local musicians,
comedians, and actors have tested and refined new
material; and where audiences of all ages have enjoyed
feature films on the largest screen in the area for over
70 years. The theatre is also a place where local amateur
actors perform, dance, and sing alongside veterans of
Broadway and other professional stages.

BROWN BAG CONCERT SERIES
July - August 2019

                      Woodstock History Center Back Lawn
FRIDAYS Woodstock-area residents and visitors have been enjoying Pentangle’s Brown
Bag concert series for 38 years. The Brown Bag Concert Series has been one of
6:00 pm Pentangle’s most beloved and highly visible summer events, with free outdoor
concerts offered FREE from late June through August. This year’s series features
an eclectic mix of artists spanning from American Folk to African Funk. The concerts
draw a large and lively multi-generational audience who come with their blankets and lawn
chairs to enjoy the music, dance with their children, and picnic with their friends and neighbors.
A major part of the Brown Bag concert series is Pentangle’s partnership with the Woodstock Community
Food Shelf in fighting hunger in our community. We encourage patrons to take a bag from each concert
and return the following week with a shopping bag full of non-perishable items.

YOUTH THEATER
ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
AGES 9 - 17

Rehearsals: February 25th - April 11th
Performance: April 12th, 2018
Pentangle is proud to announce our first spring musical featuring young thespians from the
Ottauquechee region. Our young actors will spend 7 weeks learning about theater production from
set, lighting and sound design to performing onstage.
Our inaugural production will be Annie Jr., a shortened version of the original Tony Award-winning
musical. With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone’s hearts
despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who
abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Annie
eventually finds a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace
Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.
The production will be directed by local educators Sharon Groblicki and Nancy Boymer. For over
10 years, both Sharon and Nancy have co-directed Pentangle’s annual Summer Stock Theater
Camp. Sharon Groblicki had a vibrant career as a professional actress in New York City, working
with Bernadette Peters and Scott McKenzie and acted in the sixties theatrical comedy The Knack.
She directed Pentangle’s Production of Joseph and Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat. She is the
Performing Arts instructor at the Barnard Academy where she teaches music and theatre to children.

area and surrounding towns. Participating schools include but are not limited to Woodstock Elementary,
Woodstock Union Middle and High School, Barnard Academy, White River Valley School, Cavendish Elementary,
Ludlow Elementary, Prosper Valley School, Mid-Vermont Christian School, Newton School, Albert Bridge School,
Reading Elementary, and Killington Elementary, as well as numerous home-schooling families and home-school
cooperatives throughout Woodstock and the Ottauquechee Valley.

WEEKDAY PERFORMANCES
                  Handsome and Gretel
SEPT 12 Randolph-based No Strings Marionette Company presents Handsome and Gretel, a puppet
10:00 AM adaptation of Hansel and Gretel. This marionette version sparkles with the notion of children
learning to speak for themselves in their own voice.

                   My Mouth is a Volcano
SEPT 28 This children’s musical is based on the award-winning book by Julia Cook, “My Mouth is a
10:00 AM Volcano” and teaches children the value of respecting others by listening and waiting for their
                    turn to speak.

                  Madeline and the Bad Hat
ArtsPower’s colorful musical captures the blithe yet touching spirit of Ludwig Bemelmans’
MAR 27 much loved Madeline book series. This amusing tale traces the adventures of a young Parisian
10:00 AM girl who – despite starting off on the wrong foot with a mischievous new neighbor – eventually
learns that first impressions aren’t everything.

WEEKEND PERFORMANCES
Jigsaw Jones & The Case of the Class Clown
There is a practical joker on the loose in Ms. Gleason’s class, so it’s up to Jigsaw Jones to catch
NOV 10 the clown. Brimming with music, charm, and humor, ArtsPower’s production, based on the
10:00 AM book by renowned author James Preller, will make audiences laugh and think as they learn the
secret codes that Jigsaw must decipher to solve the mystery.

                 The Magic School Bus
Hop on the Magic School Bus for a ride in this new musical adaptation based on the original
JUNE 1 book series published by Scholastic. When the planetarium is closed and the field trip is
10:00 AM ruined, Ms. Frizzle saves the day! The Magic School Bus blasts off into outer space to explore
the solar system! Ms. Frizzle gets separated from the group and her class must travel through
the planets and beyond to rescue her.

arts experience at an affordable cost.
Creative Dance and Movement In-School Residency
  NOV & After School Camp
2018 Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) teaching artist Madeline Warriner, leads 2 weeks of gym class
through dance. Students will learn hip hop, jazz, ballet and contemporary movement while also
having FUN. In addition, Warriner will also direct Pentangle’s After School Dance Camp from
           November 5th - 16th.

The Center for Cartoon Studies Residency
MARCH During this four-week residency WUHS/MS students will be mentored by a CCS student/

2019 artist. The CCS artist will guide students through the graphic creative process as they create
their own graphic novel or comic. Residency culminates with a presentation of all completed
            works.

            The Dance Theatre of Harlem
MARCH This two-day residency helps students understand major historical events as a platform to create
social change by critically examining the socio-cultural past, present and future through dance.
2019 Participants experience the African Diaspora, from the slave trade through the Emancipation
Proclamation, Hip Hop and the Next Wave through movement. Students are broken into groups
where they develop their own choreography relevant to the era. The instructors use word walls to
prompt students about the meaning of terms such as emancipation, civil rights, black lives matter etc.
Students learn basic dance moves relevant to the era from ballet, to hip-hop and jazz.

            No Strings Marionette Puppetry Residency
APRIL The No Strings Marionette Company will do a weeklong in-school residency with the Barnard

  2019
Academy on their school-wide STEAM project around the theme of water. Each phase of the
residency adds a different lesson in creativity that includes students writing their own scripts,
designing and making their puppets, and collaborating with their peers to produce a school-wide
           performance.
