diploma or master’s degree.

Graduate diplomas - Level 7
Graduate diplomas are qualifications at level 7. They are often one year of full-time study; a bachelor’s
degree or equivalent is the usual entry requirement.

Levels Each programme is classified by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) with a level
from 1 to 10 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF). The higher the level, the more complex
and demanding the programme.

Credits Credits show the ‘value’ of a programme and denote the length of time required to
successfully complete it. One credit represents approximately 10 hours of study. 120 credits represent a
one-year, full-time programme of study.

Entry guide
Each programme has entry criteria which must be met before you can enrol. The criteria may be prior
achievement of certain academic qualifications or, for mature students, they can relate to previous work,
skills and experience.
To find out about entry criteria for individual programmes, please refer to our website, www.northtec.ac.nz

“Since high school I’ve wanted to write and
illustrate fiction books for children with
disabilities because early in my life I was

“The course is all online and the best part
of it for me is meeting all the other students
with an interest in writing. We critique
each other’s work and socialise online, and
occasionally meet up physically at a hui,
but most of our connection is online. This is
a breakthrough for me because I struggled
at school to socialise. I think my school
classmates would be surprised at what I’ve
    been capable of doing.

“Doing this course has given me the
confidence to know I can write stories for
children with disabilities, and maybe help
teach them through the stories. I’ll illustrate
the writing with my own cartoon images. I’ll

“The best thing about the course is that we
learn totally on the job with the tutor when
he comes on site. Sometimes he’ll work with
a group of us on the same thing, then he
helps us one-on-one in our specialist areas.
He guides us through the theory too but now
with the new books and structures, we do a
lot of that in our own time. I left school at
14 and I’m a talker and listener rather than
a reader and writer, so there have been a
few basic challenges but the tutor and my
partner help me when I need it.

“Every day is different and I want to take
in as much as possible. I’m surprised at
how much there is to learn and how keen I
am. I jump on anything. I started with the
extraction and the skidder tickets and now
I’m doing log loading. Next I’ll move into
mechanised processing then to the hauler
tickets. After that, there are more gates that
            open as you progress.

“Long term I’d love to start my own business
as a trainer/assessor for forestry and build a
great life for me and my family.”

“I’ve always enjoyed doing make-up and
helping other people to feel good. I knew
one of the tutors here, plus some others
who were coming to the course, so I signed
   up straight from school.

“The tutors here really want you to pass,
are helpful and make you feel inspired
and confident. At the moment I’m enjoying
waxing and spray tanning, and the make-
up that we do soon will be fun. More of a
challenge for me is learning the different
techniques for nails and then developing
our own technique. Learning all the
muscles for massage also takes study and
   discipline but it’s really interesting.

“This qualification gives me a career I can
do anywhere. I’ll always have it behind
me and this is one of the fastest growing
courses in the industry just now. When I
finish the course I’ll work in Whangārei for
a while to get experience then I’m keen to
travel. I’ll see what unfolds. It would be
good to be well-known in an area for being
good at some aspect in the industry. “
