Handy Hints and Tips
1. Please ensure patient details and a succinct clinical history are included on the submission form.
2. Ensure antibiotic treatment is detailed on microbiology submissions.
3. Submitting a fresh blood smear helps us give you the best haematology service.
Sample Checks Before Referral
1. Check that the correct tube is used for the test (see below and also refer to our price guide)
2. Check the sample volume required for a specific test and if in doubt please phone us.
3. For all anti-coagulated tubes mix gently but thoroughly to prevent clotting.
4. Use a small wooden stick to check for clots in EDTA samples by gently stirring and scooping the blood.
5. If a plain/gel sample is to be centrifuged before being submitted check that the sample has clotted
before centrifugation to avoid a ‘jelly’ supernatant.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Samples should be sent in appropriate packaging not only to ensure best quality of
result but also to ensure the wellbeing of those handling these packages. If you are unsure on how best to
package your sample, please do not hesitate to contact the team or see our guides on our website. Please
be aware that making inappropriately packaged samples safe to handle adds extra time and cost to the
process and persistent receipt of such packages may incur a Safe Handling charge. We will always consult
you in such instances.

PROTOCOL: NT PROBNP SAMPLE HANDLING REQUIREMENTS
1. Draw blood into a syringe.
2. Transfer into standard EDTA tubes.
3. Centrifuge immediately to obtain EDTA plasma.
4. Transfer the plasma into a PLAIN tube ensuring a minimum of 0.5ml & label EDTA plasma.
5. Sample should be kept refrigerated before sending to the lab
Samples can be sent to the lab at ambient temperatures but must arrive within 24hrs of sampling. If there is likely to be a delay the
samples should be frozen before sending. Frozen samples can be sent to the lab in normal packaging.

1. Starve the patient for at least 12 hours.
2. Collect first sample into a serum gel or plain tube.
3. Feed a high fat meal (suggested meals include puppy/kitten food or recovery diet). The addition of oil is not usually necessary and reduces palatability.
4. Collect a second sample 2 hours post feeding into a serum and gel or plain tube. Request bile acid stimulation testing.

1. Collect the blood into a serum tube (not serum gel), ensure the tube is 100% full and avoid the inclusion of air bubbles.

PARATHYROID HORMONE RELATED PEPTIDE (PTHrP)

PROTOCOL: DIGOXIN
Serum levels, after initial diagnosis, should be given 5-7 days to adjust. A blood sample obtained 3-8 hours post dosing is to determine peak levels.
Be aware that in some animals digoxin has a short half life and peak levels may develop within 3 hours of dosing. It is advisable to monitor liver and
renal function and Na:K ratio at the same time.

We recommend a minimum volume of 2ml whole blood or plasma or serum; 5ml plain urine (10 ml if paraquat and/or diquat required); 10g fresh
tissue; 10g feed or contaminated materials; 5ml stomach contents, as applicable. Samples from at least two different sites are preferable as many
drugs leave the blood relatively quickly. Samples may be frozen. Formalin fixed tissue or faeces is unsuitable. If insufficient sample is received, it
may not be possible to complete all the requested tests and the sensitivity of toxin/drug detection could be reduced.

GUIDELINES FOR BACTERIAL CULTURE
Please note any information regarding antibiotic treatment, either current or recent, on the submission form.
Aerobic and Anaerobic Culture: This would be recommended for most samples submitted.
Aerobic Culture: This is suitable for bacteria growing in oxygen-rich areas, such as superficial skin, conjunctiva, ears and urine.
Anaerobic Culture: This is suitable for bacteria that can live in the absence of oxygen as with blood, bile, bone marrow, CSF, direct lung aspirates,
tissue biopsy or fluid from a normally sterile site (such as joint or body cavity), abscesses, deep wounds and deep skin infections. Susceptibility
testing is not performed on organisms usually considered to be commensal to aid with antibiotic governance (except if specifically requested).
Sample requirements: Charcoal swabs, plain fluids and fresh tissue are recommended samples. EDTA tubes and viral transport media swabs are
not recommended as they can inhibit bacterial growth.
