a rich catchment full of
treasures!
Our estuary’s unusual local geography and conditions
support some nationally rare and unique habitats,
and some equally special wildlife communities.
These treasures influence and enrichen our own
world - we ignore them at cost to our own use and
enjoyment of their waters.
The sheltered tidal waters of our estuary support rich
seagrass jungles, kelp forests, coral and sponge gardens to
name but a few. Whilst we can’t promise you’ll meet them
all, take a local tour and a bit of quiet care and there’s
every chance you will see some of our seals, kingfishers
and other coastal characters … if you’re really lucky, even
an otter or dolphin!
This diversity of marine habitats and wildlife is recognised
in the area’s designation as a marine Site of Special
Scientific Interest and Local Nature Reserve - where its
sustainable use & enjoyment, understanding & conservation,
are encouraged. As you’d expect, a safety-net of byelaws
help protect this; dogs are required to be under close
control to minimise disturbance, restrictions on open fires
and some bait collection activities, all help to keep the area
special. The local conservation management of the estuary
is overseen by the South Devon AONB Estuaries Partnership.
The South Devon AONB’s website provides many free
self-guided trails & guides about this special area - visit
www.SouthDevonAONB.org.uk and discover how we all
care to use and enjoy it sustainably. Some of the best ways
to enjoy the estuary and discover some of its wildlife is to
learn more about it, exploring the area and quietly from
the water – maybe join an event with a local operator.

Salcombe Town Regatta
8th–14th August 2021
The 2021 Salcombe Town Regatta commences
on Sunday 8th August with the fantastic and
unfathomable Bang and Go Back Race and
finishes with the Fun Day at the Rugby Club on
Saturday 14th August.
All the usual events will be held on the days in
between including the popular Raft Race (we
supply the rafts you supply the oarsmen) and
the Flotilla of Lights – dress your boat with LED
lights (available to buy from the Regatta stall)
and watch the fabulous fireworks from the
water on the Thursday night. There will be lots
of activities for young and old to do and watch
– we look forward to seeing you there.
