As I write the nation is tip-toeing back to something This year’s festival is as wide-ranging as ever, so to
we all hope we will recognise as the ‘old normal’. As help you dip your toes into a little of everything, here is
a festival, of course, we have already had to embrace Stewart Collins’ suggestion for a festival in 12 events:
the so-called ‘new normal’ and the 2020 festival will

as the Petworth Festival is concerned, the answer is ‘a The Bloomsbury Quartet – ReCentred: Elizabeth Maconchy

that celebrates the finest in performance, much as Sunday 18 July

We look forward to you joining us in person again,

Jill Bray - Earth Lines. A Retrospective (exhibition)
Printmaker and painter Jill Bray (b. 1936) has over the past
four decades created an extensive and unique body of work,
inspired by her abiding interest in the landscape. Bray studied
art first at Bishop Otter College, Chichester and then at
Southampton College of Art where she was influenced by the
work of Peter Lanyon, Graham Sutherland, and Ivon Hitchens.
Bray exhibited in numerous shows in the UK and overseas, was
a member of Printmaker’s Council, and her work is in several
public collections, yet she has remained overlooked compared

Vision Of Two Remarkable Women (talk)
To link in with Kevis House Gallery’s Festival exhibition, this illustrated
talk explores how two remarkable women, Sheila McCririck, Head of
Art at Bishop Otter College (1949-77), and Principal ‘Betty’ Murray
(1948-70), acquired work by some of the great figures in twentieth-
century British art to build post Second World War the Bishop Otter Art
Collection (now University of Chichester). The distinguished collection
comprises works by leading post-war artists and includes, amongst
others, Ivon Hitchens, Peter Lanyon, Sandra Blow, Henry Moore and Gill Clarke
John Hitchens. Jill Bray, whose work can be seen in the retrospective
exhibition Earth Lines at Kevis House Gallery, also had work acquired by Sheila McCririck
for the collection.
Dr Gill Clarke has published widely on twentieth century British Art and guest-curated
art exhibitions in the south of England, the next of which will be at the Russell-Cotes
Art Gallery and Museum, Bournemouth. She was Visiting Professor at the Otter Gallery,

Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman
The Dartmoor-based husband and wife team have twice won the coveted ‘best duo’ title
at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards (2013/2016), consistently delivering assured, distinctive
performances both live and recorded. Over two decades of performance they have never
been trapped in a groove, always being bold and innovative and mixing traditional song
arrangements with their self-penned material which reels from the bitter to the sweet, the
wry to the sad, the political to the passive…

Kathryn Roberts’ smoky, assertive vocals are a tasty feast for listeners
craving music that requires a sharp mind and an open heart.

Bloomsbury Quartet – ReCentred: Elizabeth Maconchy
Following the great success of 2019’s inaugural ‘pay-as-you-wish’ concert, the Petworth
Festival invites you to join us for another concert featuring music that is all too often under-
represented – in this instance music by two superb female composers, Dame Elizabeth
Maconchy DBE and her equally luminous daughter, Nicola Lefanu.
The Bloomsbury Quartet – which excelled at a previous Petworth Festival when a Royal
Academy of Music ensemble – brings Elizabeth Maconchy’s life and music into focus.
The programme also includes music by Nicola Lefanu and by Maconchy’s teacher, Ralph
Vaughan-Williams.
This wholly innovative evening is in two parts and mixes the music with a multimedia
installation to help familiarise the audience with the programme and the players: a mixture
of film, photography and ‘live’ programme notes.
Elizabeth Maconchy String Quartet No. 1
Vaughan-Williams String Quartet No. 2 in A minor
Nicola Lefanu String Quartet No. 2
Elizabeth Maconchy String Quartet No, 11
Tickets for this ‘pay-as-you-wish’ concert are free, but please book as normal and
then decide at the end of the evening how much you wish to pay.

Expect an evening of wonderfully witty bespoke songs and skits - many written to
order with swingin’ jazz accompaniment on piano - from a duo of gentlemen who have
performed for three princesses, two PMs, and one Tim Henman. And tonight it’s us!

some way from their natural habitat; music from Charlotte Campbell; the beautiful
installation that is The Bell Orchestra; ‘street entertainer’ supreme Marky Jay; and hands-

Adrian Brendel (cello) with Alasdair Beatson (piano)
Born into a family with a very special musical provenance, Adrian Brendel is one of the
most versatile and original cellists of his generation. He has travelled the world as soloist,
collaborator and teacher. His discovery of contemporary music through the works of
Kurtag, Kagel and Ligeti in his teenage years opened a new and vital avenue that he
continues to explore with huge enthusiasm alongside his passion for jazz and world
music. In 2014 he became a member of the Nash Ensemble of London. He appears in
partnership with the fine Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson who works prolifically both as a
 soloist and chamber musician.
The wide-ranging programme includes a further nod to Ludwig van Beethoven, the
Sonata in A Major, one of the cornerstones of the cello repertoire.
Fauré Cello Sonata No.1 in D minor Op. 29

Imogen Cooper
Petworth Festival is thrilled to welcome Imogen Cooper. In the words of Sir Simon Rattle,
‘Imogen is one of the greatest musicians England has produced. She’s utterly without
show. There’s a poetic, reflective side to her which is always there in her playing. It isn’t
Imogen’s style to play to the gallery. She’s not someone who goes in for fireworks in the
rafters. But I can bet you that if I were to ask any orchestral musicians who they rate as
one of the [greatest], three out of four of them will come up with Imogen’s name first time
around – and orchestral musicians are the toughest critics.’

Following her solo recital (see p.15), Imogen Cooper is joined by one of our greatest
interpreters of Lieder and song, Mark Padmore. Born in London and an alumnus of King’s
College Cambridge, he has established an international career in opera, concert and
recital. His appearances in Bach Passions have gained particular notice, especially his
renowned performances as the Evangelist in the St Matthew and St John Passions with
the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle, staged by Peter Sellars. Mark was
voted 2016 Vocalist of the Year by Musical America and was appointed CBE in the 2019
Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Tuesday 20 July | Leconfield Hall
 7.45pm – 9.40pm

 Art of Moog
Fifty years on from Wendy Carlos’ iconic album Switched on Bach, Art of Moog plays
the music of J S Bach on cutting edge analogue and digital synthesizers, along with
some unashamed electronica overtones. Formed by harpsichord and synth player Robin
Bigwood with fellow musicians Steven Devine, Annabel Knight and Martin Perkins, Art of
Moog made its debut in the 2018 Bach Weekend at Kings Place in London. In their day
jobs they play with some of the UK and Europe’s leading orchestras and ensembles, have
made award-winning solo recordings, and, amongst much else, recorded soundtracks
for Harry Potter and Wes Anderson movies. In Art of Moog they swap old instruments for
an array of Moogs, Nords, Rolands, vocoders, guitar pedals and an Akai wind-synth, to
create scintillating soundscapes and atmospheres undreamt of 300 years ago. They’ve
played in a whole range of city and summer festivals, to audiences of classical specialists
and electronica aficionados alike, to great critical acclaim.

7.30pm – 9.40pm

Christian Lindberg (trombone) and Roland Pöntinen (piano)
A festival highlight in the making, we are delighted to welcome the one and only Christian
Lindberg. Lindberg’s achievements for the trombone can only be compared with those of
Paganini for the violin or Liszt for the piano.
Having premièred over 300 works for the trombone including more than 90 major
concertos, recorded over 70 solo CDs, had an international solo competition created in
his name and been voted top brass player of the 20th century alongside Miles Davis and
Louis Armstrong, Christian Lindberg is nothing less than a living legend. On top of his
unrivalled career as a trombonist Lindberg has now also embarked on a highly successful
conducting career.
He is joined for his 40th anniversary tour by fellow Swede Roland Pöntinen, a man
described as having ‘an insatiable musical appetite and a stupendous technique.’

In 1959 the Jacques Loussier Trio released a seminal album called Play Bach. Their
blending of jazz and classical led to a new musical genre called ‘third stream’. The trio
went on to sell more than seven million records and play 3,000 concerts worldwide.
Jacques Loussier sadly passed away in March 2020, but by way of tribute the Dominic
Alldis Trio performs jazz arrangements of themes by Bach, Corelli, Handel, Fauré, Satie,
 Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Bartok.
The Dominic Alldis Trio comprises three outstanding jazz musicians who collectively bring
a fresh and contemporary approach to famous themes from classical music and opera.

The Music of Paul Simon – A Celebration
Petworth Festival returns to Petworth House’s unique stable yard for the first of three
magical evenings by kind permission of Lord and Lady Egremont and the National Trust.
The first is dedicated to the music of the multi-Grammy award winning Paul Simon. In
the first half an uncanny recreation of his partnership with Art Garfunkel by the duo,
Bookends, and then in the second the full-on contrast that is Gary Stewart’s brilliant live
reworking of the iconic album Graceland, with its sequence of songs inspired (amongst
much else) by mbaqanga – South African street music. Joyous music making by a hugely
 talented seven-piece band.
 Tickets: £31.90 (18 and under £5)
There will be a bar selling wine, Langhams ale and soft drinks.

The Petworth Festival welcomes back the remarkable pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason who so
memorably appeared with her cellist brother, Sheku, at last October’s Petworth Festival
Autumn Special. On this occasion we welcome her as a soloist having topped the classical
charts with her debut album Romance featuring the music of Clara Schumann. For her
recital, Isata brings a wide-ranging programme including major works by Mozart and
Beethoven, with the second half dedicated to the music by two American greats – Gershwin
and Samuel Barber - and the remarkable living Russian composer, Sofia Gubaidulina.

Blues in The Stables with The Blues Band
The second of three special evenings in the unique environment of the Stable Yard at
 Petworth House.
Picking up where Georgie Fame so memorably left off in 2019, we welcome The Blues
Band. In a career that stretches to almost two and a half decades and over 16 albums
they continue to add to their growing army of followers; it’s not unheard of to find three
generations from the same family at a gig. The band are today acknowledged throughout
Europe and beyond as being amongst the very finest purveyors of rhythm & blues.
The Blues Band is headed up by the one and only Paul Jones. Having declined Brian
Jones’ invitation to join the fledgling Rolling Stones in 1962, Paul accepted the very next
offer, a job with the group which soon became Manfred Mann. Over the years, Paul’s
songs have been recorded by people like Ten Years After, Al Kooper and Carlos Santana
 - and he has also written for films, television and commercials. As a harmonica man, he
has performed publicly and/or recorded with Memphis Slim, Alexis Korner, Henry Gray,
Alvin “Youngblood” Hart, Susan Tedeschi, Eric Bibb, Otis Grand - not to mention the likes
of Tina Turner and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. The list of guests on his programmes on BBC
Radio 2 and Jazz FM is quite simply encyclopaedic…

 Illyria – Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore
G & S at the festival! For the first time in over a decade we bring operetta to the festival,
the glorious grounds of Bignor Park providing the backdrop for the ‘Savoy’ classic.
Set on board the warship HMS Pinafore, the opera cheerfully mocks such great British
institutions as Class, Patriotism and the Royal Navy. Josephine, the captain’s daughter, is
in love with Ralph, a common sailor, but her father wants her to marry Sir Joseph Porter,
First Lord of the Admiralty. The couple are caught as they elope from the ship and Ralph
is locked in the ship’s dungeon. Only when certain revelations are made by Buttercup, a
dockside vendor, can everyone end up freely marrying their true hearts’ loves.
his wonderful comic opera gets the complete Illyria treatment, faithfully performed by a
 T
reduced cast on a beautiful nautical set.

hope and beauty. By contrast, the programme opens with music by the young Beethoven.

Catrin Finch (Harp) and Seckou Keita (kora)
This sublime, critically acclaimed and multi award-winning collaboration between two
adventurous virtuoso musicians - Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora player
Seckou Keita - delivers a stunning exhibition of world-class musicianship. Drawing deep
on their own diverse traditions and transforming them with remarkable synergy, Catrin and
Seckou have built a formidable reputation for their extraordinary performances. Following
the huge success of their debut release Clychau Dibon back in 2013, their long-awaited
second album SOAR launched in April 2018, followed by major UK tours in spring and
autumn of 2018. The album takes flight on the wings of the osprey, the magnificent bird
of prey recently returned to Wales after centuries of absence, which makes its annual
3,000-mile migration from the coasts of West Africa to the estuaries of Wales, soaring like
music and dreams over man-made borders, on its innate and epic journey of endurance.
Entrancing, mesmerising, intricate and ethereal, this is remarkable music and a thrilling
 live experience.

Chineke!
The Petworth team hopes that all events will prove memorable, but audiences who
attended Chineke’s festival debut in 2019 will doubtless attest to the fact that this
ensemble produced one of THE events of that particular season. We are delighted to
welcome them back in a programme that contrasts two Mozart masterpieces with two
from the 20th century by Prokofiev and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.
The Chineke! Foundation was created in 2015 to provide career opportunities to
established and up-and-coming black and ethnically-diverse classical musicians in
the UK and Europe under the motto ‘championing change and celebrating diversity in
classical music.’
