      2022 Gardener’s Toolbox Classes
Hello Toolbox Enthusiasts,
Hard to believe we have made it through another year of all this. Here’s to hoping 2022 will take a
different course.
Our plan for 2022 is to offer Gardener’s Toolbox classes in person, January through March, we
will also offer a recorded version available shortly afterwards to those who prefer that option. I am
not confident we can continue to offer both options as things get busier, but we will try. Any
changes in program delivery will be announced in advance.
Cross your fingers we do not encounter more pandemic related issues as we move forward. I have
heard from many of you who long for in person classes as well as a large group that prefers to view
from home. I am eager to see your familiar faces after this long hiatus. Regardless of how you
prefer to learn about gardening, we are happy to help and appreciate you choosing us as your
source of information. I look forward to new seeds, plants, and friends as we head toward Spring.
Thank you and Happy New Year!

will discuss the merits of numerous vegetable varieties that have proven easy to grow in central
Kentucky. Many of these feature atypical colors or other things you may not have encountered. This
is not a class about how to grow vegetables but a discussion of proven performers that are likely to
end up on your list every year. We will send you home with several types of seed for your own
garden. Cost: $15.00. This class will be presented in person and video format.
Winter Sowing ~ Thursday, February 10th at 6:00 p.m.: I am sure you have heard of the
milk jug method, and we will recap how effective that technique can be for starting early seedlings.
What I most want to discuss with you is the handful of plants that can be direct seeded in winter for
spring and summer flowers. It could not be simpler. We will provide seeds for you to try at home.
Cost: $15.00. This class will be presented in person and video format.
Breaking Ground - Options for Starting New Gardens ~ Tuesday, February 15th
at 6:00 p.m.: Suppose you want a vegetable garden out back or possibly to extend a landscape

in person and video format.
Proper Pruning ~ Tuesday, March 29th at 6:00 p.m.: Proper pruning is an integral part of

Hardy Ferns ~ Thursday, May 19th at 6:00 p.m.: Though delicate in appearance many of our
native ferns are surprisingly easy to grow. We will discuss some of the better options for landscapes
and provide a couple of plants for you to try. All you need provide is a garden with shade and
moisture retentive soils. Well, maybe a little planting effort. Cost: $15.00.
Managing Lawn Weeds ~ Tuesday, June 7th at 6:00 p.m.: There are many types of weeds
and controlling them begins with an understanding of their life cycle. We will cover annual and
winter annual weeds and their management as well as their perennial cousins. Control strategies
will include chemical and sustainable approaches. You should leave with the knowledge to gain the
upper hand in your weed battles (you still must provide the effort and motivation). Cost: Free,
but you must pre-register for this class.
Hydrangeas ~ Thursday, June 16th at 6:00 p.m.: Not to burst your bubble, but those giant
pink and blue varieties tend to perform poorly in our climate. We hope to open your eyes to all the
other wonderful hydrangeas that you might not know as well. And yes, we will offer some tips that
may improve the odds of your being successful with the blue ones. Take home small plants of more
durable varieties for your garden. Cost: $20.00.
Hardy Hibiscus~ Tuesday, June 21st at 6:00 p.m.: Often called ‘dinner plate’ hibiscus be-
cause of their giant flowers, perennial hibiscus have been around for a long time. Only in recent
years have breeders turned their attention to making better varieties. Improvements include shorter
plants, unique dark foliage and new colors that bloom for much longer periods of time. We are
sourcing some of the best varieties for your garden. Very reliable and easy to grow once
established. You will receive a plant for your yard. Cost: $20.00
New and Exciting Perennial Sedums ~ Thursday, July 14th at 6:00 p.m.: There are
myriad Sedum varieties available to gardeners and they are some of the most reliable perennials. In
recent years many new and improved varieties have been introduced. We will cover their culture
and provide rooted cuttings of several types. Cost: $20.00.
The Fall Vegetable Garden - Plan Now For Late Fall & Winter Harvest ~ Thursday,
July 21st at 6:00 p.m.: Most seasoned gardeners regularly plant fall vegetable crops. With some
planning, season extending techniques and proper storage, it is possible to eat from your garden
well into winter. We will discuss best varieties for storage, which crops can be mulched in ground
and which things are hardy enough to make it with no care. We can certainly enjoy fresh produce
through December and often later. We will furnish seeds for you home garden. Cost: $10.00.
Dividing Perennials ~ Tuesday, August 2nd at 6:00 p.m.: You will learn how to properly
divide and replant common landscape perennials. Though intimidating at first glance, plants are
very forgiving and we will walk you through the process demonstrating proper techniques.
Cost: Free, but you must pre-register for this class.
Native Flowers for Pollinators ~ Thursday, August 25th at 6:00 p.m.: In this session we
will discuss some of the better native flower choices for gardens. Planting natives for pollinators is
quite trendy and a great step toward protecting these valuable resources. Every great pollinator
plant is not necessarily a well-behaved landscape choice. We will steer you to some pollinator
favorites that also are great for gardeners. Cost: Free, but you must pre-register for this
class.
NEW DATE: Native Trees to Consider ~ Thursday, September 15th at 6:00 p.m.: There
are no perfect trees but many of our Native species can make worthy landscape specimens. We will
not steer you to which tree is the best choice for you but educate you about how to match trees to
your specific site conditions. Selecting trees that naturally occur in the soil and topography of your
site will result in fewer long-term problems. Cost: Free, but you must pre-register for this
class.

Woody Invasives Management ~ Tuesday, September 27th at 6:00 p.m.: Bush
Honeysuckle, Winter Creeper Euonymus, Escaped Ornamental Pears…the list goes on and on. We
are all experiencing problems with these highly invasive woody plants and control measures can be
intimidating. We will discuss management of woody invasives and which options are most effective.
We will discuss herbicides, special tools to make the job easier and various tips to improve your
success. Cost: Free, but you must pre-register for this class.
Tulips ~Thursday, October 13th at 6:00 p.m.: Although they are not likely to return year after
year like some daffodils, Tulips are arguably the showiest of all the spring flowering bulbs. We will
discuss the various types of tulips and which ones may be more likely to return for a few years. You
will take home a sampler of unusual varieties for your home garden. Since retail stores rarely stock
deep selections of bulbs you may be amazed at what is available from specialty suppliers. Anticipate
roughly 25 total bulbs to plant with several varieties included. Cost: $20.00.
Garden Clean Up with Emphasis on More Natural Approaches ~ Tuesday,
November 1st at 6:00 p.m.: Honestly a class more about not cleaning up in the fall. Dead plant
material, fallen leaves, and standing stalks all play a role in nature. We will discuss the benefits of
less fall clean up. From building better soils to protecting insects and pollinators, natural approaches
equate to more sustainable gardens with many benefits. Come and learn if these lower input
strategies make sense for your property. Cost: Free, but you must pre-register for this
class.
My Favorite Garden Tools - Various Tools, Equipment, and Accessories ~ Thursday,
December 8th at 6:00 p.m.: Over the years all serious gardeners find tools and accessories that
they consider indispensable. In this session I will discuss various implements that work very well in
the landscape and vegetable garden. All shovels and hoes are not created equal. Cost: Free, but
you must pre-register for this class.

                      Best Way to Collect Soil
Sample gardens, lawns, and landscaped areas separately. Collect random samples from each
area. The area to sample for trees includes the soil below the width of the tree. For shrubs, flower
beds, and gardens, sample just the soil where the plants are growing. You should sample
problem areas and areas with shrubs, trees, or flower beds separately from other turf or lawn
areas.
Do not sample compost areas, under the drip-line of trees, and close to driveways
or streets.
One commonly overlooked component of soil sampling is the depth of soil to be tested. Most
plant nutrients accumulate at the soil surface. This nutrient stratification is a result of past
broadcast fertilizer applications and decomposition of plant residue on the soil surface. Because
there is a higher concentration of nutrients on the soil surface, soil test values usually go down as
the sample depth is increased. To obtain accurate and consistent (between different years)
results, samples must be taken to the following depths for these areas:
Tilled Areas - Take soil cores to the depth of the tillage operation (usually 6 to 8 inches).
Non or Reduced-Tilled Areas - Take soil cores to a depth of 3 to 4 inches for pastures, no-till
planting (where fertilizer or lime remains on the soil surface), and minimum-till planting (where
fertilizer is incorporated only in the surface 1 to 2 inches).
Lawns and Turf Grasses - Collect soil cores to a depth of 3 to 4 inches.
Sample Preparation - After individual sample are collected and placed in the bucket, crush
the soil material and mix the sample thoroughly. Allow the sample to air dry in an open space
free from contamination. When dry, fill a clean container with approximately 2 cups of soil.
IMPORTANT - The Fayette County Conservation District will cover the cost of routine soil
sample to all Fayette County residents until further notice. This grant allows each household a
limit of 25 samples. Otherwise the cost of a routine soil test is $7.00. Bring your samples to the
Fayette County Extension Office, 1140 Harry Sykes Way, Lexington, anytime Monday thru
Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. When you arrive, be prepared to complete some paperwork
to begin the process of your soil samples. This is a great time to submit your soil samples.
Please be aware that due to the devastating tornadoes that tore through
western Kentucky recently, University of Kentucky’s Princeton Soil Lab was
destroyed. Therefore, ALL the soil samples from the entire state will now be
processed thru the University of Kentucky Soil Lab in Lexington. Delays are
anticipated due to the higher volume of samples being submitted to one
facility in Lexington. We ask for your patience and understanding during
this time.
