7th GRADE HUMANITIES SUMMER ASSIGNMENT
                     2020
PART I: Writing
Directions: Journal about your summer of 2020! Journals may be handwritten or typed. Write a minimum of 5
journal entries and include the date of each entry at the top. Be sure to label your journal entries #1-5. Typed
journals should be 12 pt. font, double-spaced, and a minimum of 1 page each. If you enjoy journaling and want
to document this summer in quarantine, feel free to write more than 5 entries. *Please have your journal
complete and readily available on the first day of school.
Some ideas for your journal entries include but are not limited to:
    ● Something new you that learned to do or a new activity you have tried
    ● Someone you have connected with virtually who has been helpful or meaningful to you
    ● Activities that you normally would have done but couldn't
    ● Where you would go this summer if you could be anywhere in the world
    ● What you have learned about yourself or the world around you
    ● What you are grateful for
    ● Books, music, or other material that have helped you deal with being in quarantine
    ● Poetry
    ● Stories from your summer
    ● Your own topic!

PART II: Reading and Character Analysis
Directions: You must read at least two books over the summer. One of the books must be a work of
historical fiction and the other must be a text related to social justice. For suggestions, see the booklist
below. You will complete the “Character Analysis” worksheet from the social justice text after reading.
*Please have your texts and worksheet completed and readily available on the first day of school.
    ● Most of these are works of historical fiction where the events occur sometime between the years of
exploration (approximately 1492) and the end of the Civil War (1865). These take place in North or
        South America or Europe.
    ● As you read your historical fiction book, you should focus on tracking the characterization and
development of one character (either the main character or an important character that you have a lot
of information about -- even the antagonist).
    ● When choosing a historical fiction novel, be sure it meets the requirements of our time period -- 1492
through 1865 (the end of the Civil War). If you are unsure as to whether or not a book is appropriate,
choose one from the list below.
    ● Please do not come in September having spent time and effort reading and recording information on a
book that will not be acceptable.
    ● *Please do not read Chains (by Laurie Halse Anderson) or Twelve Angry Men (by Reginald Rose) as
        these are our class texts.
