A Service of Readings and Carols - 3pm & 5pm Sunday 20th December 2020 - The Parish Church of St ...
Welcome
A warm welcome to you all this afternoon.

As with all our services, the Carol Service is different this year. During the
continuing Coronavirus pandemic we’re acutely aware that much of life has been
affected, just as what we can now do in church is affected too.

Whilst the service is sung by the choir, there is no congregational singing this year.

You are also asked to take this leaflet away with you at the end of this service.

Social Distancing – Social Safety

We ask you please, to help yourself, each other and us by carefully following any
instructions regarding social distancing. Please keep to the distance markers on the
floor, and for safety, only sit where you are asked to.

Masks should be worn, please, throughout the service.

A collection is taken at the end of this service, as you leave. We can also accept
donations by card:

          We can reclaim tax on your donation if you complete a yellow ‘Gift Aid’
          envelope, available from the sidespersons, with your address, date and
          signature. Thank you!

The Bidding Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer
        Our Father, who art in heaven,
        hallowed be thy name;
        thy kingdom come,
        thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
        Give us this day our daily bread;
        and forgive us our trespasses,
        as we forgive those who trespass against us,
        And lead us not into temptation;
        but deliver us from evil.
        For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory,
        now and for ever. Amen.

Please Sit

This Endris Night                                                                      Gregory Drott
        This endris night I saw a sight: Now tell, sweet son, I thee do pray,
        A star as bright as day; Thou art my love and dear:
        And e’er among a maiden sung: How should I keep thee to thy pay,
        Lullay, by by, lullay. And make me glad of cheer?

        This lovely lady sat and sung, For all thy will I would fulfil:
        And to her child did say:                      Thou knowest well, in fay;
        My son, my brother, father, dear, And for all this I will thee kiss,
        Why liest thou thus in hay? And sing: By by, lullay.

        My sweetest bird, thus ‘tis required,
        Though thou be king veray;
        But ne’er-the-less I will not cease to sing:
        By by, lul-lay.

The First Lesson
Christ’s birth and kingdom are foretold. Isaiah 9: 2,6,7

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day John Gardner
        Tomorrow shall be my dancing day: In a manger laid and wrapped I was,
        I would my true love did so chance so very poor this was my chance,
        to see the legend of my play, betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass,
        to call my true love to my dance: to call my true love to my dance:\

        Sing, O my love, O my love, my love, my Sing, O my love, O my love, my love, my
        love; this have I done for my true love. love; this have I done for my true love.

        Then I was born of a virgin pure,                 Then afterwards baptized I was;
        of her I took fleshly substance; the Holy Ghost on me did glance,
        thus was I knit to man's nature, my Father's voice heard from above,
        to call my true love to my dance: to call my true love to my dance:

        Sing, O my love, O my love, my love, my Sing, O my love, O my love, my love, my
        love; this have I done for my true love. love; this have I done for my true love.

The Second Lesson
The Angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary Luke 1: 26-38

A Maiden Most Gentle Andrew Carter
        A maiden most gentle and tender we sing: Three Kings came to worship with gifts rich
        Of Mary the mother of Jesus our King. and rare,
        Ave, ave, ave Maria, And marvelled in awe at the babe in her care.
        Ave, ave, ave Maria. Ave, ave, ave Maria,
                                                          Ave, ave, ave Maria.
        How blessed is the birth of her heavenly child,
        Who came to redeem us in Mary so mild. Rejoice and be glad at this Christmas we
        Ave, ave, ave Maria,                              pray;
        Ave, ave, ave Maria. Sing praise to the Saviour, sing endless ‘Ave’.
                                                          Ave, ave, ave Maria,
        The Archangel Gabriel foretold by his call Ave, ave, ave Maria
        The Lord of creation, and Saviour of all.
        Ave, ave, ave Maria, Ave, ave, ave Maria,
        Ave, ave, ave Maria. Ave, ave, ave Maria.

The Third Lesson
St Luke tells of the birth of Jesus Luke 2: 1-7

Lully, Lulla, Lullay                                                                  Philip Stopford
        Lully, lulla, His men of might in his own sight
        By, by, lully, lullay, all young children to slay.
        Lully, lulla,                                     Lully, lulla,
        Thou little tiny child. By, by, lully, lullay,
        By, by, lully, lullay. Lully, lulla,
        O sisters too how may we do for to preserve Thou little tiny child.
        this day? By, by, lully, lullay.
        This poor youngling for whom we sing: That woe is me, poor Child for Thee, and
        By, by, lully, lullay. ever morn and day.
        Lully, lulla, For Thy parting neither say nor sing, By, by,
        By, by, lully, lullay, lully, lullay.
        Lully, lulla,                                     Lully, lulla,
        Thou little tiny child. By, by, lully, lullay,
        By, by, lully, lullay. Lully, lulla,
        Herod, the king, in his raging, charged he Thou little tiny child.
        hath this day, By, by, lully, lullay.

The Fourth Lesson
The angels announce the news to the shepherds. Luke 2: 8-14

No Small Wonder                                                                            Paul Edwards
        Small wonder the star,                               The myrrh, to adore;
        Small wonder the light, But God gives his life on a cross -
        The angels in chorus, No small wonder!
        The shepherds in fright;
        But stable and manger for God - Small wonder the love,
        No small wonder! Small wonder the grace,
                                                             The power and the glory,
        Small wonder the kings,                              The light of his face;
        Small wonder they bore - But all to redeem my poor heart -
        The gold and the incense, No small wonder!

The Fifth Lesson
Saint John unfolds the great mystery of the incarnation John 1:1-5, 9-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in
the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing
came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. The true light, which
enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know
him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who
received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were
born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a
father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

I Saw Three Ships arr. Simon Preston
        I saw three ships come sailing in, And all the bells on earth shall ring,
        On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;               On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
        I saw three ships come sailing in, And all the bells on earth shall ring,
        On Christmas Day in the morning. On Christmas Day in the morning.

        And what was in those ships all three, And all the angels in heav’n shall sing,
        On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day?               On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
        And what was in those ships all three, And all the angels in heav’n shall sing,
        On Christmas Day in the morning? On Christmas Day in the morning.

        Our Saviour Christ and his lady, And all the souls on earth shall sing,
        On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day; On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day,
        Our Saviour Christ and his lady, And all the souls on earth shall sing,
        On Christmas Day in the morning. On Christmas Day in the morning.

        Pray, whither sailed those ships all three? On Then let us all rejoice again,
        Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;                  On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
        Pray, whither sailed those ships all three? Then let us all rejoice again,
        On Christmas Day in the morning. On Christmas Day in the morning.

        O they sailed into Bethlehem,
        On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
        O they sailed into Bethlehem,
        On Christmas Day in the morning.

The Collect
       Let us pray
       Almighty God,
       you make us glad with the yearly remembrance
       of the birth of your Son Jesus Christ:
       grant that, as we joyfully receive him as our redeemer,
       so we may with sure confidence behold him
       when he shall come to be our judge;
       who is alive and reigns with you,
       in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
       one God, now and for ever.
       Amen.

The Blessing
       The Lord be with you
       and also with you.

       May the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds,
       the perseverance of the wise men, the obedience of Joseph and Mary,
       and the peace of the Christ-child be yours this Christmas;
       and the blessing of God Almighty,
       X the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
       be upon you and remain with you always.
       Amen.

The Organ Voluntary
Finale (Symphony No. 1 Op. 14) Louis Vierne

Leaving the church today
Please remain in your places until a steward invites you to leave, taking this order of service and
any candle you have been given away with you.

Please, move away from the Duchy Door, and do not gather outside: you are asked to continue to
observe social distancing at all times.

    We would like to wish you and all those you love a Healthy,
                   Holy and Happy Christmas.
Three ways you can help this Christmas
Each of the charities below would value any donations you can make this Christmas. Each image
has an embedded ‘QR’ code, which if you scan it, will take you to an internet site where you can
make a donation.

The Children’s Society is a charity helping some of the most vulnerable children
and young people throughout the country.

Harrogate Homeless Project supports those who find themselves homeless. They
do astounding work, but rely on public donations to continue their invaluable work.

And finally, this parish church. Like all the charities on this page, we rely on
income from you, the public. Can you help us? This year the pandemic has reduced
our income by well over £10,000.

                                        Thank you
