The season of 2019-2020 has almost come to an end, and unfortunately cut short for
many by the COVID-19 concerns. The season has gone by very quickly. We sincerely hope
that all of you had a great season.

PERIODIC UPDATES. After this issue of “Accents” there will only be two issues over the
next six months. Periodic Accents Updates will also be sent as necessary Other sources
of information are the Park website @ www.MapleLeafGCC.net and CH 195 information
                                 @ www.mlgcctv.com.

HURRICANE SEASON. The coming hurricane season will be here in a few short months. All homeowners, whether year-
rounders or snowbirds, must be prepared. Do not be complacent. Year-round residents should always have a plan to
secure their home and evacuate the Park. Do not plan on staying in the Park if a major hurricane is forecast for our area.
It is possible that the County could mandate that mobile home communities be evacuated. None of our clubhouses are
approved hurricane shelters. The clubhouses will not be available if Charlotte County orders a mandatory evacuation of
mobile home parks. All homeowners, including snowbirds, must secure outside objects or those in a lanai that is only
screened. No items should be left in a condition whereby they could become loose objects during a strong wind event.

GARBAGE DUMPSTERS. Many homeowners put garbage in clubhouse or maintenance dumpsters, particularly when
departing for the summer. Your tax dollars pay for your garbage and recycle to be collected at your curbside. However,
if you put it in a Park dumpster each pickup costs up to $350 per dumpster and it is your lot rent paying that fee. We are
subject to penalty fees if the dumpsters are filled past the lid.

CCU WATER SHUTOFF FOR HOMEOWNERS. The water meter and any valves prior to the meter are the property of
Charlotte County Utilities (CCU). When departing for the summer CCU will turn off your water prior to the meter if you
desire. If you will be gone for three months or more the service is free, and they will turn the water back on when you
return. Contact CCU for the service and they will turn off the water on the date you desire.

CLUBHOUSE CLOSURE. Traditionally we close the Queensway Center for the summer due to lack of demand and to save
utility costs as well as wear and tear. The Queensway Center has closed early this year due to CDC guidance regarding
COVID-19. As new recommendations are issued, we will adapt.

SANDBAR/RESTAURANT OFF-SEASON SCHEDULE. At the completion of season, the Sandbar/Restaurant will revert to the
off-season schedule. These adjustments are necessary because 75% of the residents depart for the summer. The specific
dates and time changes will be published and placed on CH 195.

GOLF COURSE. The golf course requires a lot of maintenance during the summer due to the excessive growth rates
resulting from hot weather and heavy rainfall. During the summer the golf course will be closed on Wednesdays effective
May 1st. This will permit the maintenance staff to have an uninterrupted 10-hour period to perform the necessary cultural
practices like aerifications, top dressings, etc. Weeklong closures have also been scheduled to take place over the summer
months, the pro shop can provide more details. Please take care of your golf course by filling divots, repairing ball marks,
and raking bunkers.

PRO SHOP. Check the Pro Shop for apparel, GPS golf devices, shoes, club repair, etc.

AUTO DEBIT OF BANK ACCOUNT FOR LOT RENT. Over 800 Maple Leaf homeowners permit us to auto debit their bank
account for monthly lot rent. That is a convenience to both the homeowner and to Maple Leaf. It permits Maple Leaf to
                                                             2
Accents Director's Corner
punctually deposit your lot rent and to save considerable administrative time by not having to process checks and cash.
Please ensure that you promptly notify us if you change banking institutions and provide us with the new account number
and bank routing number. Once you have signed up for this service, you will also have charge privileges in the Country
Club and Pro Shop.

PRIVATE HOME SALES AND OUTSIDE BROKER SALES. It is very important that the current homeowner and prospective
new homeowner contact the Park Office and/or Accounting Office prior to closing a private home sale or outside broker
sale. We must ensure that the prospective new homeowners are provided the proper documentation for an “Older
Persons Community”. We must be provided copies of a picture ID of the new homeowners prior to closing. Prospective
new homeowners need to be provided the opportunity to obtain information from management and staff prior to
committing to a purchase. Sales clients through the Park Sales Office are always provided the proper documentation and
properly screened.

LOT/HOME CARE. It is essential that you prepare for care of your lot and home prior to your departure for the summer.
The spring and summer months produce a growth rate five times the winter rate. Weeds can grow six inches a week. The
Corporation only mows and trims lots; we do not maintain gardens, planters, shrubs, etc. Homeowners are responsible
to ensure that your lot is maintained during your absence. The rains and heat can cause mildew/algae/mold on home
exteriors. Pressure washing is necessary to remove, and you cannot wait until your return in the fall to have that done.
Violations will be reported to the homeowner, not those you have arranged to care for the lot.

Thanks to all the volunteers who make this community what it is. To those departing have a safe trip and a great summer.
The staff will strive to continue to improve the Park

Thank you to all of the Maple Leaf Members, Resident Non-Members and Staff for making
this past season a great one! Although it has been shortened, all of our events displayed
great sportsmanship and produced gracious winners.

Have a fun and safe summer and we look forward to another great season for 2020-2021!

Stay Hydrated

The heat is here! It’s no secret that the Florida heat can be unbearable at times and staying hydrated must be at the top
of anyone’s list. Here are a few things that can help you keep stay hydrated.

    1. You need more than water. Electrolytes and carbohydrates are essential for the body to absorb fluids. Pedialyte
is great for that. Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium and calcium are important as well for
health muscle and nerve function. All these electrolytes are lost through sweat.
    2. Your food choices are also a big factor in your hydration. Lucky for us, the foods that are in season during these
hot months like melons, strawberries and tomatoes are naturally loaded in carbohydrates, electrolytes and
       minerals.
    3. Get plenty of fluids in the night before. Waking up dehydrated after sleeping for 8 hours and not drinking fluids is
easy to do which can make it a bit more difficult to stay ahead of dehydration.
    4. Finally, stay away from fluids that are high in sugar, like soda. Sugar can drastically interfere with your body
absorbing water. It’s not just soda either. Look at the nutrition facts on those juices. Anything over 20 grams of
sugar per serving is not a good idea. Rather than that glass of O.J. in the morning, eat an actual orange and get
the benefit of fiber as well. My go to drink other than water is Orange Gatorade and water, at a 50:50 ratio.

                               Golf
Even though the golf season was cut short I hope everyone had a great season and we
hope you all have a great summer. We will be gearing up for a busy summer ahead
aerating the whole golf course after a busy few months of golf. None of this is possible
without a great staff behind me and I want to thank them for another great season.
                               Grounds
As a reminder again to all residents and for those who will be leaving us over the next
month, we will be trimming palm trees around your homes over the summer. If you have any statues or important items
in the beds near or around the palm trees, please have them moved to a safe location before you leave so there is no
chance of them being damaged when tree trimming commences. This is a good idea also as we approach hurricane
season.
On April 20th we will be having new curbing laid behind the Can Am to four of the parkettes in that area. This is being
done thanks to a donation from the garden club.
As always make sure if you need any assistance with irrigation to please send a work order request into the main office.
New annuals will be planted the beginning of May the old ones will be removed over the coming weeks.
Ant bait around homes will be done this Month. The perimeter hedges will also be started to be trimmed. Both of these
practices are done twice a year April and October.

Preparing Your Lot for Summer
For optimal plant health, fertilize and treat your lawn and garden for pests in the spring and fall. Many St. Augustine
grass lawns fall prey to chinch bugs during the summer months and there are many products that control them and
other insects. If you are trying to control weeds, you need to know the type of turfgrass on your lawn. Weed controls
for St. Augustine grass will damage Bahia and zoysia and vice-versa. Be sure to read and follow label directions
carefully. The label is the law.
Lawn Maintenance
There will be two mows scheduled in April.
As we hit the summer and rainy season, we get extremely wet in the park especially around the homes, the mowers will
make tire marks and ruts. This is the lesser of two evils if we let the grass grow to high then it encourages snakes and
other animals to use it as habitats. Furthermore, this leads to large clumps of mulched up grass to be left if we wait too
long and it is NOT in the contract for the lawn company to rake grass clippings up this would come at a charge for them
to do that. The lawn company has no problem repairing ruts after we get out of the rainy season, and now I know the
park better I will be coordinate with them better on when and when we should not mow.
Last year we had some people post pictures on Facebook I think Facebook is a great way to communicate and a way to
show how great this community is? When it comes to problems or issues to do with the park, we have elected board
officials and management on staff that should be the first people notified NOT posted to Facebook.

                                Gary Kobel

                                Coronavirus
Our community is going through difficult times as is the entire world. Our Canadian
residents must return home as quickly as possible and many of our activities and events
have been cancelled. These are but inconveniences compared to other countries and
areas of the United States. As of earlier this week there is only 1 confirmed case in
Charlotte County and for but the grace of God, we have no confirmed cases in our
community.
We must stay vigilant, if you are ill self-quarantine, practice the recommended hygiene guidelines, maintain the
recommended personal space and use your best judgement on going to places that have large gatherings. We have
decided to keep our buildings and amenities open for now. We monitor the latest's guidelines per the CDC website (
CDC.net). The board has established a Covid-19 committee. The committee is comprised of board members that are year-
round residents; Karen Hamilton, Joe Anderson, Ray LeClair and Jim Harrison as well as our General Manager Mitch Krach.
The board has authorized the committee to take whatever steps are needed to keep our community safe.
We have elected to keep the Sandbar open. It is becoming more difficult to find food items; many stores are out of meats.
We are following the states guidelines on 50% occupancy and we also offer take out service.
We will continue to update you via emails and the corporate web page. Remember the best person to keep you safe is
you, practice sound judgment based on your personal health circumstances.

Advice on the Century Link Project

This is for Maple Leaf Homeowners who will not be at Maple Leaf for the summer when Century Link will want to set up
their modems for your equipment.

The setup of the Century Link Wi-Fi can be done 2 ways with the new Century Link equipment and install team. If you
have more than 3 devices setup and running on you current Comcast Wi-Fi, you may (totally optional) ask the installer to
use the same credentials (SSID & password) on your new Century Link modem. This will save from having to reprogram
all your devices with a new Wi-Fi setup. If you are with Comcast your modem will have a Network Name (SSID) and a
Network Key (Password) that can be entered on the new modem.
                                                            5
Accents Director's Corner
This all totally Optional between you and the installer.

Before you turn in your Comcast modem please keep the old information from that device. The SSID and password
should be written on a sheet of paper and the sheet should be taped to the side of the Century Link Modem. If the
Century Link Modem has not been installed yet, then tape the sheet to your TV monitor.

If you are leaving Maple Leaf soon, be sure to let your house watch person know you are in line to get your Century Link
installed and/or authorized. Hopefully you have a summer caretaker who has a key to your house, be sure to give the
caretaker’s Name and Phone Number to Linda Sanders in the Main Office. Please fill out the absentee / vacation form
and drop the form at the office when leaving.

You should also tell your summer Caretaker to provide home access for the Century Link technician when requested. He
will set up the Century Link modem so everything will connect automatically when you get back. The process should
    take about 15 min.

When you return in the fall, Century Link will have an 800 number just for ML residents to assist in getting anything you
    need regarding setup.

Your billing ($30.95 per month) will start in about September or whenever Century Link gets Maple Leaf substantially
    completed.

We appreciate your co-operation in helping this project come to the best
We encourage you to complete the Vacation and Absentee form before you leave so the office has the contact
information for the person who is watching your home.
    Rat Problems
At our last homeowners meeting many residents came to me and were concerned about the rat problems around their
homes. I contacted a pest control company that services many of the homes in our community. They told me our
community is no different than other communities. They gave me these recommendations and said if all homeowners
practiced these recommendations, we would not have a Rat problem.
1.) Secure the area underneath your home; make sure animals do not have access to the areas underneath your homes.
2.) Place 3 to 4 traps around your homes. Most pest control companies offer this service for a separate fee. They check
the traps every 2 to 3 months and place more poison in the traps
3.) Keep the area around your home clean of fruit and other foods. If you are a seasonal resident make sure the person
watching your home keeps the area around your home clean.
    Rampart Lands
• The Mapleleaf Board of Directors formed a committee of residents to conduct a study to determine the best use of
the Rampart land. The board selected Dave Hebert, Lindsay Brannen, Gary Croskey and Drew Robertson, all engineers to
conduct the study. The committee's charter was to develop and recommend to the board the best option for the future
use of the Rampart Land, solicit from the clubs their future space needs, invite input from any other individuals and groups,
develop options to meet their space needs and evaluate options and recommend the best utilization.
The study has been completed. The board's intention was to hold an informational meeting at the end of March to present
the study to the residents. Due to the corona virus and the CDC warning on gatherings the board decided to present the
results of the study via a video that residents could watch via the Mapleleaf web page in their own homes.
This link https://youtu.be/C-a8EYpmR20 will take you directly to the video.

Although the board is very receptive of this proposal, board approval and or funding must occur before we can move
forward with some of the proposals.

If you have any questions on the presentation, please send them to ( info@mapleleafgcc.net )
    Thank You

                                                                 6
Corporation Chairs and Tables
We are missing some table and chairs. If you have borrowed any tables and chairs, please return them to the facility where

Pickleball
Tom Kanigan, Past President

The year ended with 260 members having signed up to play Pickleball. This represents in excess of a 20% growth rate from
last year, which clearly shows the interest level in the Park. Naturally this puts a strain on the limited number of courts we
have and hopefully we will see additional courts being built as the need is there.
Our club championship on February 21-23 was another tremendous success with players competing in all four levels of
play. The winners in each category were:
Novice:
Winners: Delia Janes. Denis Leduc
Runners up: Sharon Farrow. Pam Bryan
Intermediate Minus:
Winners: Ann Pitre. Dana Steeves.
Runners up: Larry Campbell. Bill Croft.
Intermediate Plus:
Winners: Joe Kaak. Ken Jensen.
Runners up: Chris Garner. Mike McLellan.
Advanced:
Winners: Rob Kenton. Tony Stam
Runners up: John Boag. Joe Potter.
All winners will receive individual engraved trophies courtesy of Don Gowland, so many thanks to him for making these
lovely keepsakes.
The Social BBQ on Saturday proved to be very popular, so a special thanks to Bernadette Gowland and her committee for
making this happen.
Due to the early departure of most Canadians, and concerns about the coronavirus, we postponed our 2020 AGM until
November.
Our Fall registration will be held on Monday, November 9th from 2-4pm at the courts. All the event dates for the coming
year as well as all our news are posted on our web site, which is mapleleafpickleballclub.weebly.com. Please check it
regularly to keep up to date on our Pickleball Club.
Until next season, Happy Pickling!

Billiard Club
Stan Noel, Secretary

The season has flown by so fast. It is hard to believe we are already into the end of March, beginning of April. Many Maple
Leaf winter residents will soon be leaving or have left already to return to their summer homes. Many residents have left
early due to the Corona Virus infecting the world. Most activities in the park have been cancelled due to the virus.
However, before the virus hit, we had a very busy March. As the old saying goes, `Time flies when you are having fun’.
The last Inter-Club Matches between Maple Leaf and Windmill Village and Isles Yacht Club had to be cancelled due to the
virus.

The Friday Night Couples Group had a very successful season this year.
On February 21, 2020, thirteen couples attended the Couples group and played a modified game of 8-ball, with one team
going undefeated. That team consisted of Joe Szabo and Joanne Anderson. Three teams tied for second place. They were
Homer Fournier and Mavis Trivett, Tim Jones and Heather Comba, and Peter Trivett and Lily Millia.

On March 6, 2020, seven couples attended the Couples group. They played a modified version of straight pool with 2
couples tied for 1st place. They were Joe and Lenor Szabo and Tim and Debby Jones.

The March 20, 2020, Friday Night Couples Group was cancelled due to the virus.
On Monday, March 2, 2020, a 9-Ball Tournament was held, and the winners are as follows.

First Place: Ken Hamilton and Stan Noel
B-Flight: Tim Jones and Richard Smith
Consolation: Tom Zenisek and Pat O’Leary

On Monday, March 23, 2020, the Championship games were played, and the winners are as follows:

Snooker:
First Place: Peter Trivett
Second Place: Don Heywood
Third Place: Jim Bayens

8-Ball:
First Place: Ken Hamilton
Second Place: Peter Trivet
Third Place: Jim Bayens

9-Ball:
First Place: Jim Bayens
Second Place: Homer Fournier
Third Place: Tom Zenisek
Congratulations to all the winners.

Due to the Corona Virus, all games for April have been cancelled. The end of the season has ended for Club play. Our AGM
has also been cancelled. It is tentatively set for the coming fall of 2020.

Hope everyone has a safe summer and the virus dies a fast death. We look forward to seeing all Maple Leaf seasonal
residents return next fall healthy and ready for another fun filled season. To our year-round residents, have a healthy
summer and have fun all summer in the Billiard Room.

Ladies Golf League
Sharon Poland, Vice-Captain

This very successful golf season delighted in a membership of 133 ladies and 7 Social Members! The LGL hosted the New
Member Breakfast, our annual Invitational Tournament “Hawaiian Par Tee” and we put a shine on 65 golf carts during
our Cart Wash Fundraiser. Members also participated in the Golf Association Match Play Tournament, Senior & Super
Senior Tournaments as well as the Flight Tournament and Club Championship.

Full results of all tournaments can be viewed on the Golf Genius website.

On a down note we unfortunately had to cancel our final LGL “Spring” Luncheon and AGM. With the COVID-19 virus in
our midst the Ladies League Executive voted unanimously to consider the health and wellbeing of our members and
cancel. All pending items, on the agenda, will be dealt with at the first LGL Luncheon starting our 20/21 season. These
include the AGM announcement of new Executive Member(s), Ringer Board winners for the most improved golfer of our
9 and 18 holers and the exciting new plans for the 20/21 season.

Thank-you to Bill McGee for his ongoing assistance in developing our media needs. Thanks to Tim Redmond for our GA
publications. A special thank-you goes out to Cammie Burns, our volunteer in the golf shack who, every Tuesday, braved
early tee-off times and sometimes very chilly weather to get our ladies organized and ready for their games. Our Golf
Professional, Nathan Wilson, and his Proshop team continue to be a huge support to the Ladies Golf League.

The LGL Executive puts time and effort into the Ladies league and we all hope that our efforts make your LGL golf season
an enjoyable one. Have some ideas? You may consider joining the team and help keep our league fun and entertaining.
                                                           14
We hope you enjoyed your golf season this year. Have a super summer, “PLEASE WASH YOUR HANDS” and see you once
again next fall for another season of friendship and easy swings!

Maple Leaf Tennis Fundraising – Greg Freeman

The Strawberry Festival has, for decades, been the source of fundraising for the tennis club. In addition to being a tradition
during March Break, offering a delicious dessert, music and fun activities for the children who are visiting their
Grandparents, it also signals that the end is near for a number of Snowbirds who will soon be heading north. This annual
fundraiser allows us to make significant contributions to the tennis facilities in the park. For example, two years ago we
paid over $10,000 to share the cost, with the Corporation, of having the tennis courts re-surfaced – this gets done every
6 years. The grandstand area by the Charlotte Courts has been expanded to support the number of people who come out
to watch the tennis matches, on-court benches have been added, sun shades have been installed on the courts, cushions
and storage boxes have been purchased to provide a comfortable seating area, etc. This has only been made possible
thanks to the support of the Maple Leaf Community who buy tickets to our Strawberry Festival. Thank you, Maple Leaf.

Ladies League – Kate Lilley
What a wonderful year the ladies have had. Out of 5 teams we have had 4 out of 5 teams in the top three spots. The 2.5
Alley Cats, 3.0+ Up Town Girls and the 3.5+Snowbirds are all in first place in their divisions. The 3.0 Love Hurts team is
third.
If interested in playing in the Ladies competitive league in the fall, please contact Kate Lilley at katelilley@msn.com

Men’s League – Jeff Papiez

This year we have had 8 Men’s Teams competing weekly in the Peace River Men’s League. Two of our teams finished in
1st Place: Congratulations to B2 Gold who finished in 1st Place out of 6 teams and to 75+ Purple who also finished in 1st
Place out of 5 teams.
We had two 2nd Place teams: B1 Green – 2nd of 6 teams and B3 Crimson – 2nd of 8 teams
Bravo to all teams for their successful season. Have a safe summer and come back to Maple Leaf rested up for another
very full season. The End of Year Peace River Banquet which is normally held at The Queensway was cancelled this spring.
Many thanks to the Maple Leaf Tennis Club Directors for their support this year. I have enjoyed my term as the liaison,
and I welcome Keith McGruer as the new Men’s Liaison for the 2020-21 season. He will field any questions regarding
men’s League play or from any tennis players interested in joining the League next year.

Monday Night Men’s Ladder – Jane Pauls

Congratulations to the Winners of the Monday Night Men's Doubles
The "B" flight winners were Gary Croskey and Ken Morris
The "A" flight winners were Mel Watson and Don Farrow.
Jim and Jane Pauls thank all the participants who took part this year. They are looking forward to planning the next season
when we return.

AGM Postponed to November at the Opening Wine and Cheese – Greg Freeman

Our last three events of the year, the Strawberry Festival, the Maple Leaf Cup and the Annual General Meeting, were
cancelled due to the concerns surrounding COVID 19. Since the postponement, Canadian Snowbirds were strongly advised
to return to Canada as quickly as possible and every day we have been saying good-bye to departing friends. The Tennis

Golf Association
Jane Robertson – Vice President

What a season it has been. I hope everyone has enjoyed it as much as I have. We had an increase in participation in
every tournament and Nine & Dine was a sell out every time. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm.

One thing I did forget in the March Accents was to give an update on the remaining Granite Tee Markers. All markers that
were originally purchased by clubs, leagues or families were returned to those original purchasers. The remaining markers
were auctioned off and the proceeds, $771, were sent to the Bahamas Red Cross asking them to use the donation towards
the hurricane relief. It is great to see these pieces of history proudly displayed on properties both on the golf course, on

                                              Strawberry Festival
                                               Denise Holland, Publicity
Maple Leaf Strawberry Festival was cancelled, for the First Time ever,
                                                due to the Covid-19 Virus.
A Virus that has created a Pandemic.
Therefore, it was a quiet day, as residents and seasonals, pondered their next moves.

Posted on Channel 195, Facebook, Sandwich Boards, People were advised to:
KEEP YOUR TICKETS, (remember where you put them!)
THEY WILL BE HONORED WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 2021.
Next Season, we look forward to Delicious Strawberries, Great Music, Laughing Children with Faces painted with
dazzling designs & all the Laughter and Gaiety such an Event stimulates.
Also, we should have our New Sun Deck another good reason for celebration.

The Strawberry Festival is the Tennis Club's biggest fund raiser & together with our Club membership fees helps us
donate substantial funds to the Corporation.
Much of these funds apply to maintenance, repair & upgrading the tennis facilities, an amenity for all ML residents and
visitors. Donations are also made to various Clubs & Organizations within the Park.

Our Sponsors enable us to keep costs down on the price of the Tickets and for that, we wish to give warm thanks to local
businesses who had kindly offered to Sponsor us again, for which we have Advertised in the Accent for 3 months, and
today, March 19th, we take down the Banners.

From the Editor:

Because so many events for the month of April have been cancelled, there will not be a calendar generated.
The most up to date information can be seen on channel 195 or online at mlgcctv.com
Next month will be the last regularly scheduled issue of Accents until Sept. There will still be updates sent as necessary.
Please look for the new Accents email in the next issue as the current one will be closed after the May-Aug. newsletter
goes out.
Thanks, Donna

Update from the Pro Shop Nathan Wilson – Golf Professional 3/23/2020
All,

With the ever-changing restrictions and recommendations put forth due to COVID-19,
Maple Leaf will be making the following changes and will be implemented by start of
play tomorrow. 3/24/2020

    1. All rakes will be removed from bunkers, and all bunkers will be considered
Ground Under Repair (GUR). All players will receive free relief from all bunkers.
Players are to drop outside of the bunker, one club length, no closer to the hole.
   2. All sand shovels will be removed from the divot containers. If you do not
bring your own shovel from home, please use your clubhead like a shovel to fill
      divots.
   3. All water coolers will be removed from the golf course. Please make yourself
reminders to bring water before you leave the house. Make a note for the steering
      wheel of your golf cart.
   4. We will be raising the cups on the green, so a portion of the cup is sticking out.
By doing this, there is no longer a need to touch the flagstick. The ball is
considered holed when the ball comes in contact with the cup.
   5. All sand scoops will be removed from the Maple Leaf golf cart fleet.
Please understand that this is a starting point and adjustments will be made if
necessary, as we all deal with COVID-19.
Have a great day and stay safe!

                                                            19
