       WHISKEY RAID
       Saturday, January 13 7:00-10:00 p.m. Ballroom & River Room

Half-way through the Celebrated History of Cherokee Country
Club, tensions boiled between law enforcement and renegade gamblers
and partakers of hard spirits. The turmoil eventually erupted in the
Great Whiskey Raid of 1961, an event sandwiched between the annual
galas Nine O’clock Cotillion and Men’s Cotillion. Smashed Slot Machines, 200
gallons of confiscated “hooch” and the incarceration of an assistant manager
eventually helped pave the way for the loosening of liquor laws and finally,
liquor by the drink. Thanks to the persistence of some existing club members,
you no longer have to hide your bottle in your locker.
Join us as we eat, drink and gamble while paying tribute to this
infamous day in Cherokee’s History.

In the winter we take several steps to ensure that our
turf will survive and be of good quality in the spring.
We use turf paint on the tees, fairways, and green sur-
rounds to help increase the soil temperature a couple
of degrees. The dark green color of the paint absorbs more sunlight than
the light brown color of the dormant Bermudagrass, which helps in-
crease the soil temperature.

We also do a fall fertilization of all the Bermudagrass throughout the
course. This late season fertilization helps the plant build up reserves to
take it through the winter. It normally takes a few consecutive days with
the temperatures in the teens or single digits to cause winter injury, but
damage can occur from just one extremely cold night. In our region, we
are too cold in the winter to have all warm season grasses such as Ber-
mudagrass and Zoysia without the aid of turf covers. We are also too hot
in the summer to have an entire golf course of cool season grasses such
as Fescue and Bluegrass. Differing microclimates on the golf course dic- PAINTING # 6 GREEN SURROUND
tate that we have both warm season grasses and cool season grasses. But
unfortunately, neither is perfect for our location.

The other significant step that we take is limiting the golf carts to paths only. This is an inconvenience to golfers, but it a tre-
mendous help to the dormant turf. We appreciate your cooperation and patience.

                                                                                                THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14
