FALL SPORTS
SWIMMING/DIVING: It was a dynamic first campaign under Head Coach Shari Hart in 2017, as the Falcons established seven
new school records. The relay team of Nicky Mattheys, Nicolas Probosz, Alex Webster and Graham Beckstein crushed all the
relay records on the board, including the 200 free, 200 medley and 400 free relays. Individual records were broken by Beckstein
(50 free), Probosz (200 IM/100 breast) and Webster (200 free). The Falcons represented well at the district meet, with standout
performances by Anika Kennedy (2nd, 50 free), 6th grader Kaleigh Hart (5th, 100 fly), Carter Beckstein (7th, 50 free) Tyler Wade
(9th, 50 free) and 7th grader Gem Turkomer (11th, 100 back). Saint Stephens qualified 14 swimmers for the regional meet,
including all six relays for boys and girls, and four swimmers – Webster, Probosz, Graham Beckstein and Mattheys – advanced to
state, where the Falcons ultimately placed 22nd. Webster paced the team with an 11th-place finish in the 500 freestyle to cap
another impressive season. It was his third straight state championship appearance. Diver Cate Mulqueen made an impactful
debut for the diving team, placing top-three during the entire dual meet season. With the exception of the graduated Probosz,
each of those student-athletes return for what should be an exciting 2018 season.
BOYS GOLF: SSES continued its long tradition of success during the 2017 season, ultimately
qualifying for the state tournament. The boys fell just short of capturing their first state
championship since 2004. The Falcons held second place after the first day of the Class 1A
tournament, but couldn’t make up any ground and settled for the runner-up trophy. Ryan
Kinkead (Boston College) and Massimo Mbetse (USF) completed their stellar SSES careers
with second (2017) and third (2016) place state tournament finishes to their credit. The
season also included a repeat as district champions and a win in the prestigious, 17-team
Donald Ross Invitational that ended a five-year run of titles by Lakewood Ranch High.
Despite losing Mbestse, Kinkead and Song Bai, the 2018 Falcons return two veteran players
in seniors Alan Klenor and David Hu, who both already have top-10 state individual finishes
to their credit.
GIRLS GOLF: The Falcons extended their school-best streak of district titles to six, and
returned to the state tournament for the sixth straight year after finishing second in the
regional, which ended a five-year run as champions. Led by Maria Huang, the Falcons
completed their season in 11th place at state, a two-spot improvement over 2016. The top
three players return this season – sisters Maria Huang (sophomore) and Catherine Huang
(senior), and Kendall Miller (senior). With some added depth expected to emerge among the
newcomers to the program, the Falcons should find themselves right back in the hunt for
their seventh consecutive state tournament appearance.

4 – Consecutive years that a SSES boys golfer has finished in the top 10 at the state tournament:
David Hu (9th/2017), Alan Klenor (10th/2016), Justin Wynen (8th/2015), Jack Cen (6th/2014).CROSS COUNTRY: Both boys and girls
squads ran runner-up at the district
meet in 2017. The girls finished fifth in
the region, qualifying them for their
second straight state meet. The boys
narrowly missed a return trip to state
with a seventh-place region finish,
although graduated senior Henry
Howell did advance as an individual. In
Tallahassee at the state championships,
led by sophomore Hannah McCurry and
freshman Allie Serterides, the Falcons
ultimately finished 14th, three spots
higher than the previous program
best. This season will start with more
questions than answers. With just more than half of each varsity squad returning, can new additions coalesce around a young
core group? Will the speed and spirit from the rising sophomores and juniors build even stronger squads? Will the girls once
again be a force in the district paced by McCurry and Serterides? Will junior Jackson Dillingham and senior Jim Class step up
and help the boys return to state?
VOLLEYBALL: Short on numbers in 2017, the Falcons finished 7-8. After slumping through a six-game losing streak in
the middle of the season, they rebounded to win three of their final four matches and reach the semi-finals of the district
tournament. Roster depth figures to be an issue again with the graduation of two key seniors. That leaves just four experienced
starters, and two are eighth graders – Jordyn Byrd and Alyson Folkens. Juniors Kate Folkens and Sarah Stevens also return.
WINTER SPORTS
BOYS BASKETBALL: With consecutive successful
seasons and the program’s first post-season bid since
1999, it’s safe to say that the Falcons have begun to
establish a winning culture under third-year Head
Coach Dave Rumenapp. SSES finished the 2017-18
campaign at 15-10, earned a share of the regular-season
district title at 9-1, and was the league’s tournament
runner-up. That meant a regional playoff berth for the
first time in nearly two decades. Although that game
resulted in elimination at Naples First Baptist Academy,
it showed the youthful Falcons’ potential. The season
included sweeps of district rivals Out-of-Door Academy
and Sarasota Christian, and was punctuated by a road
win at Bradenton Christian, and non-district victories
against Braden River and Cardinal Mooney. The future
looks bright. The 2018-19 Falcons lose just one starter
and return their top three scorers from a season ago –
junior Ty Barker (13.9 ppg), and seniors Cade Westberry
(11.3 ppg) and Jordan Edwards (11.2 ppg). Leading
rebounders Barker (8.5 rpg) and junior Cam Vining (8.6
ppg/5 rpg) also return for a team that looks poised for a
run to capture the first district championship in school
history.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: After ending a post-season drought that dated back to 1999
with a district runner-up finish to advance to regional play during the 2016-17 season,
the Falcons continued to build on that success in 2017-18. SSES posted its first winning
record (12-8) in nearly two decades, repeated as district runner-up and won its first-
ever regional playoff game, upsetting Naples First Baptist Academy on the road, 47-44,
to advance to the regional final. How remarkable has the recent turnaround been?
Entering the 2016-17 season, Saint Stephen's had won just eight district games since
2006, and went winless in district play from 2009-2015. The Falcons have now posted
an 11-7 district record the past two seasons. SSES won just five games in five seasons
between 2009 and 2014, but has racked up 22 victories during the past two campaigns.
Under the leadership of new Head Coach Bret Bystricky, this year’s team will need to
compensate for the loss of two key contributors. LeNae Jones (9.8 ppg./5.8 rpg.) and
Claudia Sbaschnik (9.2/5.2) each scored more than 600 points during their high school
careers and were leaders for a young team. Despite their graduations, however, plenty
of experience returns. Junior Sarah Stevens (9.2/9.4) and eighth grader Jordyn Byrd
(8.4/9.6) give the Falcons one of the tallest and most athletic post duos in the area.
Steady freshman guard Jamie Springstead is already a two-year varsity starter, and senior
Maria Herrig (3.5/2.3) and sophomore Allie Serterides are dependable options. Senior
Lily Chapman will be counted on as a reliable, long-range sniper on the perimeter, while
freshmen Nikole Cosentino also returns and is a willing defender for the Falcons.
BOYS SOCCER: Very few of former Head Coach Marc Jones’ 25 seasons leading the Falcons were as fulfilling as the 2017-18
campaign. Although SSES fell in the first round of the regional playoffs, the Falcons finished 11-2-3 overall to win their eighth
straight district championship – exceeding expectations, given the squad’s youth and lack of proven scoring punch. Jones
recorded a 375-72-35 all-time record at Saint Stephen’s and captured 19 district, nine regional, and one state championship.
The Falcons have posted a 95-16-18 record since 2010-11. Their last district loss came during the 2009-10 season, a string of
46 games in which SSES is 43-0-3. The 2017-18 team was paced by gritty seniors – goalie Trevor Mulqueen (East Tennessee
State) and Chris Pennewill (Rhodes College). They led a tight-knit squad that scrapped its way to four one-goal wins and an
improbable 4-0-2 record against large public schools including Sarasota Riverview, Braden River, Southeast and Bayshore. The
program is now in the capable hands of Stephen Adair, who has coached youth, club and high school soccer in Virginia and
Florida. He has the unenviable task of following Jones, and
his first Falcons team will lean on senior Noah LaBelle and
junior Jacob Whorf for leadership and scoring punch.
GIRLS SOCCER: The 2017-18 Falcons produced a 10-5-2
season, with a district runner-up finish and a first-round
regional playoff appearance. In his two campaigns as
head coach before moving out of state, Andrew Sopher
compiled a 21-12-2 record that put the program on
firm footing. SSES now turns the reins over to one of the
state’s most successful prep coaches, as Guy Virgilio was
coaxed to leave Lakewood Ranch High after 18 seasons.
He led his teams to a record of 312-75-39, won 13 district
championships, three regional championships, and
appeared in three state Final Fours – the last time in 2014.
It may take some time to develop, but the expectations for
girls soccer at SSES have obviously just increased. Virgilio’s
first Saint Stephen’s team will have some solid pieces, led
by two of the top three returning scorers in senior Ayla
Johnston (18 goals, 6 assists) and junior Jackie Schlossberg
(10 goals, 8 assists). The Falcons should also be able to lean
on senior Kendall Miller, who scored seven goals in just 11
games last season. Sophomore Emma Craig saw her first
action in goal in 2017-18 and registered a solid 1.358 goalsagainst average. Sophomore Janie Chatham is a versatile performer
who is comfortable playing anywhere on the pitch. Senior Rena Parent
and sophomore Stacie Burgess solidified themselves as solid outside
backs a season ago and will likely anchor the defense. Seniors Ashleigh
Rodhouse and Siddie Pennewill are also options on the back line.
WRESTLING: The Falcons’ Big Four – Jake Ross, Max Manning, Parker
Lansberg and Jake Manning – put the program on the map over
the past two seasons with outstanding consistency on the mat that
produced six state qualifiers. Senior Jake Manning will now be the lone
holdover during a period of transition, but there is no better piece for
Head Coach Bobby Latessa to build around. Manning became just
the second Falcon ever to medal at the state tournament when he
finished fourth last season in the 113-pound class. His brother, Max, and
Lansberg also qualified for state, and Jake Manning and Lansberg won
district championships during the 2017-18 campaign. Despite Manning
being the key returnee, the Falcons will have two other experienced
grapplers in seniors Darron Robinson and Dalton Francis, who both
missed last season with injuries but are district-title caliber talents.
In fact, Francis was a district runner-up and regional qualifier at 220
pounds as a sophomore at Bradenton Christian in 2017.
SPRING SPORTS
BASEBALL: Perhaps no team on campus is better positioned for a solid postseason run than the baseball Falcons, who have
been building toward this season for a number of years. A veteran team returns off a 17-5 campaign in 2018 that ended
abruptly in the district tournament and left a sour taste, but the pieces are in place. The return of senior Jacob Eyre from
Tommy John surgery boosts a pitching staff that already includes steady seniors Nick Schroeder (7-0. 3.09 ERA) and Max Runde
(6-1, 2.85), and junior Wyatt Sevin (2-2, 2.20). As a sophomore, Eyre was 3-1 with an earned run average under 2 for the Falcons,
and he figures to lead the staff after a year off. The offense is just as solid, paced by seniors Mike Madigan (.405, 21 RBI) at
shortstop and Ben Tobio (.468, 12 RBI) at catcher. There are no easy outs in a lineup that also includes OF Peter Balos (.426, 16
RBI), IF Schroeder (.333), 3B Sevin (.315), 1B Runde (.293) and OF Ben Schnur (.275). If things fall into place, the Falcons should
be in the hunt for their first district championship since 2009 . . . and more.

15.6 – Average wins by SSES baseball over the past three seasons. After four consecutive losing
campaigns from 2011-15, the Falcons have gone 47-26 (.644 win percentage) since 2016.SOFTBALL: Can these young Falcons
make a run at a state title? The idea
doesn’t seem far-fetched when you
consider that four of their nine losses
a year ago came at the hands of
eventual state champion Admiral
Farragut – the last of which was a
narrow 3-1 defeat in the first regional
final appearance in SSES softball
history. The graduations of SS Claudia
Sbaschnik (Albion), CF LeNae Jones
and 1B Sydney Ashley leave holes to
fill, but there is still plenty of talent.
It starts in the circle with the one-
two punch of Ella Dodge and Amy
Woodworth keeping hitters in check.
Both finished the year with earned run
averages below 3. The lineup includes Julia Dodge (.316), Woodworth (.306) and Emma Craig, who combined to drive in 34
runs in 2018, and phenom middle schoolers Ella Dodge (.316) and Alex Call (.274).
BOYS LACROSSE: Under first-year Head Coach Dan Rice, the Falcons (11-9) exceeded the expectations of almost everyone
by notching the first winning season in program history. The next step is to become relevant in district play and a challenger
to the league’s upper echelon – Cardinal Mooney, Sarasota Riverview and Out-of-Door Academy. Despite losing five seniors,
there is definite reason for hope. Last year, freshmen Chris Donnelly, Connor Rice and Cade Ryskamp all played big roles for the
Falcons, as did sophomores Caden Milburn and Julian Sedillo, a District 17 honorable mention selection. All are a year older
and more experienced, but the team’s young core bodes well for the future. Providing the experience is District 17 first-team
senior attacker Colin Varady. If the Falcons make a jump forward in 2019 the way they did in 2018, it will be an impressive feat.
GIRLS LACROSSE: The 2018 season brought a third straight district title and the Falcons’ (15-5) deepest post-season run ever.
SSES captured two regional playoff games and reached the state’s Elite Eight before finally bowing out of the tournament.
The 2019 squad will have two gaping holes to fill with the graduations of All-Americans Katie Pierce (American) and Baylee
Barker (Rhodes). While their departures means a huge chunk of the Falcons’ scoring punch is gone, there is still some solid
experience returning. Two-time
All-American midfielder Kendall
Miller will no doubt be expected to
provide leadership and offensive
production. A mix of experience
and youth will be key to the
Falcons continuing their climb,
led by seniors Ashleigh Rodhouse,
Zoey Block and Rena Parent, and
sophomores Taylor Vara, Janie
Chatham and Mia Lindsey.
BOYS TENNIS: For the second
straight year, the Falcons (9-3)
advanced to the regional final

the state title at No. 1 doubles. He and teammate Chenhe Li won
the 2017 championship, while Damm and partner Kevin Jiang
made a run to the 2018 finals but settled for runner-up honors.
The 2019 Falcons will no doubt be strong again behind Damm,
Jiang and key returnees Max Petrov and Noah Van Dyke, who
must step up their games with the departures of No. 3 and 4
singles players George Krouzek and Graham Hadesman. To return
to the state tournament for the first time since 2015, however,
the Falcons will have to find a way to overcome the Krugs and
the Thunder.
GIRLS TENNIS: Under rookie Head Coach Tumeka Harris, the
Falcons (11-2) won district and regional titles in 2018 to qualify
for the state tournament with a top five that included three
middle schoolers and only two high school students – Cassy
Huang and Laura Perazzolo. Despite their youth, the Falcons
were dominant in the regular season, sweeping eight of their
10 matches, with the only loss being a 4-3 setback at Sarasota
Riverview. This year’s squad will continue to be very young
with Perazzolo, a junior, the most experienced. Paradise Traub
(freshman) and Maria Petrova (8th grade) are also key returnees.
TRACK AND FIELD: While the boys team failed to defend its
2017 state championship, the Falcons did qualify 15 athletes for
the meet in Jacksonville, and the 4x400 relay team of Sydney
Brown, Jett Gillum, Demetrius Davis and Chase Brown finished
third in Florida. Most of the key pieces of that team have moved
on and 2019 figures to be a rebuilding year. Returnees with state
experience include distance runners Jackson Dillingham, Noah
LaBelle, Matthew Kincaid and Allie Serterides, high jumper/
sprinter Jordan Edwards, and field athletes Kendall Miller and
Dylan Davis.

GETTEL’S GOT IT!
Gettel.comSaint Stephen’s enters the 2018 season riding a 22-game winning
streak and is the two-time defending Sunshine State Athletic
Conference independent state champions. While most will expect a
step backwards because of the graduations of ultra-talented players
including Fred Billy, Chase and Sydney Brown, Demetrius Davis, and
Parker Lansberg, don’t tell these Falcons that.
It will be a different-looking team, but the expectations haven’t
changed.
While the offense was collecting video-game-like numbers the
past few seasons, it overshadowed the incredible defensive effort
being put forth every week by the Falcons. In last year’s unbeaten
2018
season, the SSES defense allowed just 7.2 points per game, held six
opponents to seven points or less, and recorded three shutouts.
As this year’s offense creates its new identity with plenty of new
faces in the starting lineup, the defense already looks game-ready
after registering a scoreless spring effort in two quarters, holding
future regular-season opponent Indian Rocks Christian to just two
first downs.
Junior LB Cam Vining, senior DE Tyler Burnham (four sacks in the
spring game), junior DT Dylan Davis, senior LB Dalton Francis, junior
S Ty Barker and senior LB Truman Carlsen combined for more than
280 total tackles a season ago, including 59 tackles for loss and 22.5
sacks. Senior defensive lineman Darron Robinson played in just two
it will be a different-lookin
games before an injury sidelined him for the rest of the season, but
he had 31 tackles and three sacks as a sophomore. Sophomore DB/
LB Calvin Sauerbeck should also take a step forward after recording
27 tackles, two defended passes and a fumble recovery last season
in limited playing time.
Also, watch for newcomer and Manatee High transfer Jack Peebles
to make his presence felt at linebacker. There’s no doubt the Falcons
football
will once again be very tough to score against in 2018.
Even though the big playmakers SSES relied on to boost it to three
straight SSAC title games have moved on to the collegiate level,
that doesn’t mean the Falcons’ offense won’t have the weapons in
preview
place to continue to light up the scoreboard.
The strength of the unit is clearly up front with a sturdy offensive
line that includes lots of experience led by Davis, Burnham, Francis,
Robinson, senior Trey Bauer and junior Alex Sket. The talent and
aggressiveness in that group of linemen should make it possible
for the Falcons to grind out plenty of yards, first downs, and
touchdowns.

the record-setting Billy at quarterback, with junior Trystan Brown 2018 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
second on the depth chart. Also keep an eye on junior Xavier
Williams. The athletic, dual-threat lefty was a star for the Palmetto (ALL GAMES 7 P.M.)
High junior varsity team last year before transferring to Saint
Stephen’s in the summer. AUG. 17 - AT LAKE MARY PREP
Sophomore D.J. Clark will try to fill the shoes of the other part of (KICKOFF CLASSIC)
the Falcons’ dynamic backfield duo from a season ago, stepping
in for Chase Brown at tailback. As a freshman, Clark saw mop-up AUG. 31 - VS. CAMBRIDGE CHRISTIAN

and looked capable. He carried 15 times for 66 yards and a SEPT. 7 - AT WINDERMERE PREP

who may be the Falcons’ most versatile player. The junior carried SEPT. 14 - VS. SHORECREST PREP
the ball 20 times a year ago for 212 yards and three scores. He’s
also a capable receiver with good speed and the ability to break
tackles.
SEPT. 21 - AT NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN
The true wildcard that opposing defenses will have to deal with SEPT. 28 - AT OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY
for the Falcons, however, is elusive receiver Jordan Edwards.
The senior has missed the past two seasons with knee injuries, OCT. 5 - VS. BAYSHORE CHRISTIAN
but looks ready for a big return in his final year. SSES is hoping
Edwards can recapture his 2015 freshman form, when he led OCT. 11 - AT BRADENTON CHRISTIAN

and scored four touchdowns. He was also the team’s top punt
