If a situation occurs that is not mentioned in the contract the advisor, coach, and or appropriate administrator will take appropriate actions to resolve the matter. Atwater High School athletes set an example for others in their school spirit, leadership, and commitment to their studies. They are held responsible for upholding, reflecting, and projecting the ideals of their school and community. In effort to making their year an exciting and smooth year, specific guidelines have been set and will be enforced by the Atwater High School Cheer staff. The following guidelines are designed to keep the program consistent and fair. Any participation, parent involvement, money, and time spent in the summer and school year of 2019-2020 will only be valid for the school year 2019 - 2020. PRACTICE/GAME RULES Grades: Each cheerleader will be given a grade for athletics (7th period). These grades are very important, as they count towards a cheerleader’s physical education requirement. Grades and given and explained by the advisor only. Practice Dress Code: All cheerleaders must wear appropriate attire each day (no jeans, appropriate cheer shoes and hair in a ponytail. All hair must be pulled back). School dress code will be enforced at all times. If a cheerleader does not dress out and gets a dress cut, they will still need to practice. Dress Cuts are considered one of the following: • Not wearing practice cheer shoes/tennis shoes • Forgetting practice clothes • Not wearing practice outfit set by coach (TBA by Cheer Advisor or Coach) • Not following school dress code • Having acrylic or long nails Dress Cut Consequence: Each dress cut will result in two extra laps of running. *ABSOLUTELY NO ACRYLIC NAILS! Short nails must be maintained. THIS IS A SAFTEY ISSUE.
Conditioning: Cheerleaders are ATHLETES. All team members are EXPECTED to participate in MANDATORY conditioning days (TBA) Cell Phones: Cell Phones, Ipods, and any other electronic device are not allowed during practice, games, or any other school function where we are attending as a team. School policy regarding the use of these items will be strictly followed. Phones will remain in the cabinet and or the cell phone box during practice. If a parent needs to contact cheerleader, they need to contact the COACH OR ADVISOR. People at Practice: boyfriends, girlfriends, friends, and family members are not allowed at practice. Distractions are easily made when the above are present. Absences: EVERY athlete is needed to have a good practice. One person’s absence will affect the entire team tremendously. Please understand that formations and dances are hard to complete with missing athletes. Appointments and jobs should be scheduled around practices (including: doctor, dentist, etc.). Every event should be treated with equal importance. An absence is only excused if one of the following: • Illness-verified by the school and a doctor's note. A doctor’s note needs to be turned into the Advisor if it is not a school day. Parent phone call or email to coach is mandatory. • Family Emergency- Death, serious illness of a family member. Parent phone call to coach is mandatory. All-star Cheerleading: Being a part of an all-star cheerleading team is not an excuse to miss practice or games. Atwater High Cheer must come first. These misses will be considered unexcused. If an athlete is absent from school and plans to attend a game or practice, the absence must be reported to both the Attendance Office and the Student Body Office (325-1263) before the game or practice. You may also call or email the athletic director. Jobs: Jobs are not an excused absence from practice. Your schedule needs to be made around cheer practices and games. Discipline for Absences from Practice: • 1 Unexcused Absence may result in removal from routine • 2 Unexcused Absences may result in a routine and game • 3 Unexcused Absences may result in removal from squad. *To perform, cheerleader must attend ALL PRACTICE DAYS that week of gameday. If cheerleader does not attend all practice days, they will be removed from the dance routine. GAMES: HOME AND AWAY Uniforms: Each athlete must come to games in their uniform and prepared as instructed by the Cheer Advisor or Coach. The athlete must always bring their poms, shell, skirt, warm ups, brief, shoes, bow and hair tied up in order to cheer at a game. If you are missing a piece or pieces of the uniform, you will be sitting out (suspended) that game. You are not allowed to wear previous years cheer uniform or warm ups.
Side note: Uniforms are to be worn by AHS cheerleaders only! This includes: Sweats, Jackets, Shoes, Bows etc. *Athletes who have acrylic or long nails will sit out from games. Athletes are not allowed to have acrylic or long nails, due to safety for the team. Home Games: Arrival will be on your monthly calendar. Any cheerleader who is late for the game will sit out the entire first quarter. If an athlete (Usually JV) chooses to stay at a home game and wants to remain in his/her uniform, they will need to sit together by the advisor and/or varsity coach and assist Varsity cheer. If a JV/Freshmen cheerleader decides to sit in the stands, they need to change completely out of their uniform. At all away games, ALL cheerleaders are required to stay with the coach and advisor. They will not be permitted to sit with friends. Transportation: Athletes will be transported to and from games/events. Parent transports from games is acceptable only with prior approval from the Athletic Director by filling out a Transportation Request form. If a parent is to pick up an athlete, a parent must notify in person and sign-out at the time of pickup from the game. If the Cheer Advisor or Coach cannot physically see the parent, the cheerleader will not be released. Absences: If an athlete is absent and it is an EXCUSED absence as covered under “Practice”, the Advisor and Coach needs notification ASAP. A doctor’s note needs to be given to coach or advisor. If an athlete is absent and it is UNEXCUSED and notified this will result in a suspension from the game. A NO SHOW, meaning advisor/coaches do not know where the cheerleader is or being able to get a hold of student, is considered removal from the team. Consequences: Athletes need to show respect to staff, coaches, and captains. If any defiance is given, consequences will be given by the advisor and/or athletic director. As Cheerleading is a school sport, Cheerleaders will follow all school rules and policies at games regarding: Disrespect, Foul Language, Threats, Vandalism, Drug Possession, Public Displays of Affection, Etc. The advisor, coach, and or AHS Staff member has the right to write a referral towards any behavioral problem at a game or practice. Public Display of Affection(PDA)- When in uniform you are representing Atwater High school as well as your team. PDA is unacceptable at school and school events. If seen by staff or coaches, the athlete may result in being pulled from halftime. FINANCES/ACCOUNTS *An informational meeting will be scheduled for those who make the cheer team. A deposit fee of $150 is to be paid at this time to secure athlete’s spot. Please write checks payable to AHS Cheer. Fundraising is acceptable before tryouts only at the student’s discretion.
