Virtual Learning
   • Students participation will be counted in attendance as they participate daily

   • Students who select this option will be required to stay with this option for at
     least the first nine weeks/ end of grading period. After this time, students will
     have the option to return to the traditiononal classroom setting or continue
     with virtual learning.
   • Students may be required to attend school for certain events such as state
     testing, benchmark assessments, or other activities designated by the school
     principal.
Traditional Learning
  • Students will receive all instruction except for PE within their homeroom class
    setting.
  • Students will attend PE and lunch with the same group of students.
  • Lunch and breakfast will be consumed in the classroom on a daily basis with all
    classes visiting the lunchroom ONE day a week. Students may bring their lunch
    from home, as well.
  • Snacks will be available for purchase and brought to the classroom. Students will
    place order with homeroom teacher each morning. Students may also bring a
    snack from home.
  • Each student will have a personal set of school supplies provided by the Fort
    Payne City Council. Supplies will NOT be shared among students.
Classroom Organization
  • Desks, chairs, and tables will be re-arranged to increase space between
    seated students
  • Desks, chairs, and tables will be facing the same direction with all students
    seated in a forward position
  • Students will remain seated as much as possible in the classroom
  • Only teachers and staff required for instruction will be permitted in the
    classrooms
  • Students will be prohibited from sharing items such as pencils, markers,
    crayons, etc.
  • Art teacher, Guidance Counselor, and Librarian will provide instruction in the
    classroom and travel from room to room
PE Guidelines
  • Classes will enter and exit the gym from various locations.
  • Number of classes at PE at the same time will be limited and students will be with
    same students they attend weekly lunch break in the cafeteria.
  • Students will sit at marked locations to maintain appropriate distance from peers.
  • Students will use hand sanitizer upon entering and exiting gym.
  • Lessons will be engaging but will NOT include contact activities and will limit use
    of shared equipment.
  • PE will take place outside as much as weather permits to allow for increased
    social distancing.
  • Students will need to wear a mask when 6 ft. distances cannot be maintained.
School Supplies Provided by Parents
      •   Face mask
      •   Backpack
      •   Lunchbox (if students packs a lunch)
      •   Tennis shoes for PE
      •   Water bottle with Name written on it
      ***Students will not be permitted to drink from water fountains but
      may fill a water bottle and keep at their desk; paper cups will also be
      provided
Parent Communications Regarding COVID-19
    • All communications related to FPCS and Williams Avenue will come to
      parents/guardians through the following methods:

    • Voice Messaging System
    • Traditional Media outlets (radio and TV)
    • Class DOJO (please sign up with child’s individual teacher for direct
      communication throughout the school day)
Expectations for FPCS Campuses
  • Social distancing guidelines of six feet (6ft.) will be implemented at WAES as
    feasible.
  • Face masks will be worn by all students and staff when a six foot distance cannot
    be maintained.
  • All students will wear a face mask when riding a school bus to and from school.
  • All students riding in a car to school will exit/enter the car wearing a face mask
    during arrival and departure from school.
  • Employees are required to self-check for illness and should stay home if sick.
  • Parents of students should check child’s temperature and check for illness each
    day prior to sending their child to school. Sick students should remain at home.
WAES Cleaning and Disinfecting
   • Classrooms will be sanitized using electrostatic disinfectant sprayers at the
     beginning and ending of each day and when students are out of their homerooms
     throughout the day.
   • Restrooms and common areas will be sanitized on a regular schedule following
     each whole class use.
   • Teachers will have disinfecting wipes and supplies to wipe down desks,
     doorknobs and light switches and other classroom supplies throughout the day.
   • Custodians will disinfect water fountains, door handles, light switches, stair
     railings, and other frequently touched surfaces every hour.
   • Hand sanitizing stations are located in every classroom, at building entrances,
     and throughout all common areas and hallways.
   • Air filtration systems have been installed on ALL air/heat units throughout ALL
     FPCS system buildings and buses.
Home Screening Requirements
  • Parents should check child’s temperature every morning. Students with
    temperature of 100.4 or higher should stay at home and consider COVID
    testing if there is no other explanation.
  • Monitor for the following COVID symptoms every morning and keep students
    home if present: cough, congestion, shortness of breath, or gastrointestinal
    symptoms (diarrhea OR vomiting).
  • Teach and enforce proper handwashing, coughing into elbow/tissue; not
    sharing personal items/supplies; self-reporting any symptoms to teacher or
    nurses; and discourage holding or shaking hands, hugging, or giving high-
    fives to peers.
Persons with COVID 19 Symptoms
   • Students and employees exhibiting symptoms of COVID 19 without other
     obvious explanations are prohibited from coming to school, and if they do
     come to school, will be sent home immediately. Persons will NOT be allowed
     to return to the school campus until they have completely recovered
     according to Alabama Dept. of Public Health guidelines.
   • Asymptomatic return to School per CDC guidance states: if a person
     continues to have no symptoms, you can be with others after 10 days have
     passed since the receiving the COVID test
   • Staff and students who have recently had close contact with a person with
     COVID-19 should also stay at home and monitor their health.
Symptoms of COVID-19
  •   Fever or chills
  •   Cough
  •   Shortness of breath or difficutly breathing
  •   Fatigue
  •   Muscle or body aches
  •   Headache
  •   New loss of taste or smell
  •   Sore throat
  •   Congestion or runny nose
  •   Nausea or vomiting
  •   Diarrhea
Illness During the School Day
   • Any person exhibiting signs of illness will be sent to the nurse immediately for
     evaluation.
   • Students/staff exhibiting signs/symptoms of COVID19 will be cared for in a
     separate symptom room just inside the front doors at WAES. Few people will
     be permitted in the room, and the room will disinfected frequently.
   • Students/staff with symptoms will be walked out of the building from the
     symptom room to persons driving them home. Parents will NOT be required
     to come in and pick up or sign out.
   • Students that take medications on a daily basis at school will be administered
     meds in the Nurse’s office, not in the symptom room.
Siblings & Households with COVID
    • If a student is unable to attend school due to COVID-19 symptoms or a
      positive COVID-19 test, his or her siblings or other students living in the same
      household will be questioned and if they exhibit symptoms, they will also be
      excluded from school. If they do NOT have symptoms, they may still be
      excluded from school and asked to self-quarantine.
    • If a student or employee has recently had close contact with a person with
      COVID-19 symptoms or diagnosed with COVID-19 or has recently traveled
      from somewhere considered to be a “hot spot” by the CDC, the school
      system my exclude the student or employee from the school building and
      recommend that they self-quarantine for 14 calendar days.
    • The FPCS will not attempt contact tracing. This is the responsibility of the
      Alabama Department of Public Health.
Visitor Guidelines for Williams Avenue
      • Visitors and parents will have limited
        access during the pandemic.
      • Parents and guardians will not be
        permitted to eat lunch with students.
      • Large assemblies and programs for
        family and public will not be scheduled
        at this time. (examples: Open House,
        Parent Involvement Night, Book fair,
        Veteran’s Day Program, etc. )
Check INS and Check OUTS
   • Parent and Guardians should walk students to the door of the school when
     checking in late. Call the office and students will enter the building and office
     staff will sign student in and get them to their classroom. If you must
     accompany your child in the building, then only one parent may enter the
     building and must go directly to the office.
   • Only one parent is allowed in the building to check their child out and they
     must go directly to the office. Other children/siblings are not permitted in the
     school when checking out student(s).
Attendance at Williams Avenue
   • Parents are encouraged to upload, email, or fax all excused absence
     documentation.(parent notes and doctor/dentist/medical excuses)
   • Please email excuses to Mr. Boatwright, Asst. Principal at
     jboatwright@fpcsk12.com OR fax to 256-845-0147 at WAES.
   • Hand delivered excuses will also be accepted and should be turned in to the
     classroom teacher the day following an absence.
   • Students are permitted three (3) excused absences per nine weeks with
     parent note. All absences after three (3) not covered with medical excuses,
     etc. are considered unexcused.
   • Three (3) unexcused tardies convert to one unexcused absence.
Transportation Changes and Checkouts
       • ALL transportation changes must be in
         writing. Please send a handwritten note
         the morning of the change.
       • NO changes will be taken over the
         phone throughout the school day.
       • Checkouts will NOT be permitted after
         2:30 pm
Bus Riders
• Masks and face coverings will be worn by
  students and staff
• Students will sanitize hands upon boarding

  members of the same family
• No eating, drinking, or chewing gum on bus
  (unless medically required)

Car Line Procedures
  • Car Line Entry is on 15th Street near the Fire Station. Students will be picked up on Jaycee
    Avenue, which is a one way street running south to north
  • 3rd Grade parents should enter line from Godfrey Avenue to 15th Street turning into the
    right hand lane of Jaycee Avenue with pick up of student beginning at 2:55 pm
  • 4th Grade parents do NOT line up prior to 3:10 pm. Please enter car line from Gault Avenue
    to 15th Street turning into the left hand lane of Jaycee Avenue
  • Parents will follow their grade appropriate lane to the gate on Jaycee Avenue
  • 3rd Grade students with 4th grade siblings will remain at car line and will be picked up with
    4th grade sibling
  • SRO will open gate at 2:50 pm allowing 3rd grade parents ONLY to enter to pick up their
    child. 4th Grade parents will gain access at 3:10 pm.
  **PARENTS MUST HAVE PAW PASS DISPLAYED TO PICK UP. If you do NOT have your
  PAW PASS, you must pull around to the front of the building and pick up your child at the
  office. Parent/guardian or authorized person must provide photo identification. NO
  exceptions.
    **NO WALK UPS ALLOWED.

WAES Child Nutrition Program for 2020-21
WAES School Handbook
Please review the Student Handbook with your
child prior to signing any paperwork in the
Start of School packet. You may review it
online by going to www.fpcsk12.com and
selecting Williams Avenue Elementary School
from the SELECT SCHOOL tab. Then OUR
SCHOOL tab and then click WAES SCHOOL
HANDBOOK. Please make yourself familiar
with attendance, discipline, and dress code
policies.
WAES VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE
  • All FPCS OPEN HOUSE activities will be conducted virtually this year.
  • WAES OPEN HOUSE activities will take place on Tuesday, August 11th.
  • WAES teachers will contact parent/guardians via phone to share specific
    information regarding individual classroom videos or Google Meet times.
  • Parents should pick up Start of School Packets beginning July 31st at the
    front entrance of the school. Completed paperwork should be turned in to
    your child’s homeroom teacher the 1st Day of School.
  • Class lists will be posted after 4 pm on July 31st at the front entrance of the
    school.
