Presidentʼs Welcome
A very warm welcome to Winchester Photographic Societyʼs
89th Annual Print Exhibition
The Winchester Photographic Society has had an Annual Print Exhibition for nearly 100 years.
Our Centenary is in two yearsʼ time, and the Print Exhibition is still ʻtheʼ big event in our Season.
We are delighted to be able to display our best images in the City Space gallery at The Arc in
Winchester.
It is a great privilege to be President of the Society this year, and to see the depth and breadth of our
members photographic skills displayed for you.
Our Annual Exhibition encourages members to make, show and sell physical prints, and showcases
the work of the Society to the wider community in and beyond Winchester.
There are 11 Classes, ranging across nearly every photographic genre, from Portraits to Nature,
Action to Street/Urban, Creative to Scapes, as well as Monochrome, Hampshire, Beginners and Free
Subject, plus a Set of Three. These classes encourage members to work in a variety of styles, rather
than concentrating on one particular specialisation.
Please vote for your favourite image.
The Murla (Peopleʼs Choice) trophy is awarded when the Exhibition closes. It goes to the image
which received the most votes from visitors. I hope you will take time to vote for your favourite.
In numbers: 56 members entered the exhibition. There were 524 entries submitted and we have
been able to display 139 images from 53 members. There are 11 Class winners and 40 submissions
received Certificates of Merit – all of those are shown in this catalogue.
The Society is indebted to the Hampshire Cultural Trust for their support and hosting of the
Exhibition again, in particular Kirsty Rodda and Gisselle Giron for their organisational input and the
expertise of the whole HCT team who have worked to put on this exhibition
The Exhibition would not have happened without the support and organisational skills of Gavin
Bowyer, a past President, and from our Treasurer Dr Lilian Hobbs for being able to organise and
display the images for the judges. I also wish to add our thanks to Geoff Sharman for his work in
managing previous Exhibitions. Many WPS members have come forward to help with the
practicalities of sorting and framing the photographs that you see here.
Most of the images on display are for sale as mounted prints. HCT staff on duty will be happy to help
you with any you wish to purchase.

Our Judges
We invited three experienced judges, Paul Mitchell FRPS, Ashley Francis CPAGB and Derek Gale
LRPS to judge the images. We thank them for their time and expertise.
Paul Mitchell
Paul is a professional landscape photographer and a well respected photographic judge as
well as lecturer. During lockdown, he was a key judge assessing panels for RPS Distinctions,
ensuring that the physical, submitted prints were up to standard whilst the remaining panel
members judged online. His commitment to prints, and to photography at the club level,
makes Paul an ideal judge for our exhibition.
Ashley Francis
Ashley is an active member of Fordingbridge Camera Club. He joined the SCPF panel of
judges in December 2018, and was upgraded to an SCPF Level 2 judge in February 2020.
Ashley was the judge for our first online competition after lockdown was imposed in March
2020; he was a very popular judge and was given great feedback by WPS so we were delighted
to have him on the panel for the exhibition.
Derek Gale
Derek is a professional photographer specialising in contemporary portrait and wedding
photography. He also has a passion for imaginative and mysterious Fine Art Photography. He
has judged for WPS competitions on several occasions and was a judge for our annual
exhibition in 2020 when we were first forced to go “online” for our judging. It was a pleasure
to welcome him back this year.

WPS Annual Print Exhibition 2022 31Joining Winchester Photographic Society
We are always looking for new members for the Winchester Photographic Society; anyone
interested in photography will be made welcome.
Our meeting season runs for a full nine months from September through to early June,
meeting every Tuesday at The Arc here in Winchester from 7:30pm.
Our programme offers a rich variety of topics covering many aspects of photography,
including invited inspirational external speakers and lecturers, enthralling membersʼ
evenings and exciting internal and external competitions. The Annual Exhibition is one of
the highlights of our year.
There are Special Interest Groups which meet on Monday or Wednesday evenings for
Beginners and Improvers. Other groups cover topics such as Presenting “Panels of Pictures”
and helping members achieve Royal Photographic Society Distinctions.
The society offers practical workshops and training throughout the year. This year sessions
have involved photographing owls and people, and guided photo walks to places not
usually open to the public.
