CATALOGUE OF RESULTS
chief judge's report - Gina Dal Santo The DIAA and RA&HS has a fine tradition of quality products, innovation and excellence while ensuring the competition is in line with industry developments. Sadly, last year there was no competition, no Awards Dinner, and no Royal Adelaide Show, so for this year we are on track with the judging. Fingers crossed you will be reading this at our awards dinner. We had 265 entries, this number is down from 2019. I can only surmise due to COVID-19 the reason for our entry numbers being lower than usual, hopefully we can remedy this for next year. I urge all producers to enter into the competition, I personally would like to see an increase in entries. The competition did see some new and exciting flavours in the ice cream section, always interesting to see new flavour development. We saw an increased in entries in the flavoured cheese section, again interesting to see such a vast array of flavours. The washed rind and blue lines were down in numbers. I would like to see this increase next year. Our fresh classes proved to be of high quality. It is such a pleasure to taste fresh product such as milk and cream with such vibrancy and freshness. The judging panels are made up of the best fine-tuned palates from various industries with a wide variety of expertise. The judging team proudly reflects the diversity and depth of the dairy industry. This year we saw Melanie Malig from B-d Paris Creek Farms step up from associate judge 2019, previously Chief Steward to judge. Melanie has been with the stewards’ team for many years, and it was very exciting to elevate her to the judging team. We have a sound judging team which I would like to increase from two panels to three panels in the next three years. I would like to work on our stewarding team and try and have some consistency with stewards that I will be working with each year. We had four new stewards join the team this year, Mandy, Hayley, Alex, and Marcelle. Michelle joined us last year as a new steward. By keeping the same stewards, I am able to ensure that they have the skills and knowledge to deliver the samples as needed to the judging team. In time the stewards will be the future judges. This year I was left without my Chief Steward due to unforeseen circumstances. I had to put this responsibility onto Sean Kay, and he proved to be focused, show initiative, and kept the judging on track. A huge thank you to Sean. This was the second time we did the judging electronically, after the judging we were able to see our deficiencies and now know where we can improve, this will all be implemented for 2022. The results are faster and clearer using the electronic system. The quality and variety of products produced in South Australia and Australia is of the highest standard and it is through the DIAA and RA&HS cheese and dairy products competition that we can objectively demonstrate to Australian consumers and international markets that, our products are on a level playing field with our international counterparts. It is through the system of awarding Medals and Championships that the industry, buyers, and consumers can easily recognise top performers and make production and purchasing decisions. For the exhibitors, these awards provide recognition of product quality and consistency which can be used as leverage into new markets and more importantly the judges’ feedback facilitates a vehicle for improvement and further development and growth. In conclusion I would like to thank the organisers of the RA&HS Dairy Products Committee, and especially for giving me the honour and privilege of leading the team of respected judges at the 2021 competition, and more importantly thanking the behind-the-scenes team, the judges cannot do their job without the Stewards.
