Importance of Outdoor and
Environmental Education in
Today's Changing Society
Kalsa Parker-Lodge
The emphasis of today’s education has been centered on
technological education, along with the adoption of hobbies
and countless hours spent in front of screens. Addressing the trends
and consequences of a childhood separated from nature, this talk
seeks to reconnect us with those memorable outdoor places from
our childhood and help us engage future generations to stay outside.

Introduction to Bikepacking
Max Birdsong & Mark Gomez-Barn
Bikepacking is the combination sport of backpacking and mountain biking.
It pairs the thrill of riding a mountain bike with the freedom of traveling
in the backcountry. This presentation will cover the basics of bikepacking
in the hopes of providing the knowledge and tools that individuals
need to take advantage of this innovative sport, as well as address the
special needs and considerations when programming such a trip.

Nature, Spirituality, and
Outdoor Programming
Whitney Mathern-Lodge
Spending extended time in a wilderness setting has a profound impact on
humans. Countless authors have documented how nature and wilderness
clears their minds and touches their souls. Perhaps that is why we were drawn
to the field of outdoor programming ourselves, to nourish our souls and to
guide participants to a similar place of peace. How do we as leaders
facilitate that feeling of interconnectedness? This presentation will examine
the history of man’s relationship with nature, and explore ways to facilitate
a spiritual connection to nature for our participants.

Service-Based Recreation
Anna Niemeyer & Hope Woods-Barn
This presentation hopes to inspire other student leaders on the benefits
of incorporating service into regular programming. It will feature some example
trips that have both been lead and attended by the presenters. Trips
featured will range from full service trips to trips where service projects
were a side activity. This presentation seeks to charge the audience with
a responsibility to preserve the areas that we love to frequent and ways that
 we can fulfill those obligations.

The Environmental Ethics of Outdoor Adventure
Damon Akin-Pavillion
The world around is unfortunately dying. Instead of denying that environmental
change is occurring, we as adventurers must do our part to educate ourselves
and the individuals around us what the outdoors and our earth means to our
earth’s survival. This presentation will highlight a few important ethical theories
and then apply them to the current ethics principles that we practice today (LNT).

Edible Plants in the Wilderness
Mike Lambert-Pavillion
Imagine you are 35 miles into a floating trip, when suddenly your canoe tips
over. You manage to grab your backpack, but your food barrel is washed
away by the current. You are now without food. You decide to paddle back
to base camp but it will take two days time. Through this informative lecture
individuals will learn ways to survive off of the bare minimum and gain
knowledge on how to give your bodyy energy and nutrients by scavenging
nature’s natural edible growth. Individuals will learn how to identify these
resources and their locations, as well as how your body will benefit from them.

1:30-3:00 pm
Effects of Digital Devices on the Brain
Jiana Stover and Hope Woods-Lodge
In modern society, interacting with digital devices is becoming more of a
commonplace in our daily lives and activities. Whether it is waking up and
checking our smart phones first thing in the morning, mindlessly surfing the
internet for hours on end, constantly checking our phones throughout the
day, or using a digital GPS system to navigate, human beings are connected
to and using digital devices more now than any other point in history. What
effect is this having on our brains and in our lives? This talk presents a synthesis
of current scientific data and research from a myriad of disciplines to address
  these questions.

Climbing Potrero Chico
George Bieker and Thomas Gaston-Barn
This presentation will cover Thomas Gaston and George Bieker’s trip to
Potrero Chico from December 26th-January 4th over the past Christmas break.
The presenters’ goal is to give students an idea of what it takes to travel to
Potrero Chico, go rock climbing, and to provide valuable logistical information
to make this trip a safe and successful adventure, as well as the problems that
  might arise while being there.

2016 ARAP/FILMFEST
TWO FILMS WILL BE FEATURED SATURDAY EVENING AT
           THE 2016 ARAP FILM FESTIVAL.
              Here are their storylines.
J2 - Arduous Exploration in One of the
World's Deepest Cave Systems
      by Matt Covington
While Everest has already been climbed, the deepest cave in the
world still awaits discovery. Given the current knowledge of world
geology, there are a select few areas where it is likely to be found.
One of these areas is the Sierra Juarez of southern Mexico, which
contains the cave with the largest proven depth potential in the
world, Sistema Cheve. Recent exploration of this area has focused
on a new cave, J2, which has quickly become a respectable cave
in its own right, now over 1200 meters deep and the 6th deepest
cave in the Western Hemisphere. It is one of the most remote places
ever explored underground. Reaching the current end of the cave
requires traversing 11 km of passages, about four days of travel time
one-way, and diving through two underwater tunnels. Six major
expeditions have occurred in this cave since its discovery, each of
them running for 2-3 months. I will share images and stories from these
expeditions and discuss the logistics involved in such endeavors.
The cave has not given up its secrets easily.

                                                       Kasia Biernacka/Marcin Gala
ClimbAR
Danny Henkel, a documentary film graduate student at the University of
Arkansas, has spent the last year and a half filming the rock climbing
scene in Arkansas. In addition to sneak peaks of his thesis film "ClimbAR",
Danny, and others who were involved with the filmmaking process, will
talk about their experiences and share some behind the scenes
 photos and stories.

EXPERIENCETHEOZARKS
With vast opportunities for excellent paddling, climbing, hiking,
backpacking, and mountain and road biking, it’s hard to think
of a reason why not. Paddle the 135 free-flowing miles of our
nation’s first national river, the Buffalo National River. Lace up
your hiking boots and enjoy the river by foot on the 37-mile
Buffalo River Trail. For more excellent hiking and backpacking,
Ozark Highlands Trail stretches 218 miles eastward from
Lake Fort Smith. If climbing is your thing, our conference host
Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is only the beginning of the Ozarks’
long list of crags. Boulders, sport, and traditional climbing await
at nearby Sam’s Throne, Cowell, Cave Creek, Valley of the
Blind, Stack Rock, and Shepard Spring. Hop on two wheels to
test yourself on the challenging climbs and thrilling descents
of the Ozark highways, or take the knobby tires on the Syllamo
Trail, which the International Mountain Biking Association calls
“one of the finest purpose-built mountain bike trail systems in
the country.” More paddling awaits on the Kings River, Mulberry
River, and Big Piney Creek. See the remote caves and waterfalls
in one of the Ozarks’ federally designated wilderness areas.
Arkansas’ Ozarks are the perfect place for your next program
 or personal adventure!

HCR/HORSESHOE CANYON RANCH
HCR is known around the world in the climbing community as a great
