With Wolfgang Tillmans, the Galerie Daniel Buchholz (Cologne, Berlin) has one of
the great, internationally celebrated contemporary photographic artists in its
programme. Gisela Capitain (Cologne) confronts works of Martin Kippenberger withworks of the American photographer and conceptual artist Christopher Williams. The Page star of gallery Andrea Caratsch (St. Moritz) is the Swiss action and conceptual artist 2/6 John Armleder. The Charim gallery (Vienna) is bringing, among others, works of the Georgian artist Tamuna Sirbiladze, who died young, with it to Cologne. The wife of Franz West painted with big, expressive gestures on mostly monumental canvases. For its first appearance at ART COLOGNE, Clearing (New York) has selected, among other works, sculptures by Eduardo Paolozzi, who is one of the most innovative artists of British postwar modern art. His sculptural works move at the interface bezween human being and machine. Gagosian’s booth, “Untitled (Skulptur)”, confronts the viewer with a group of artificial bodies: human and animal; hyperreal and abstract. The gallery shows a spare bronze figure by Alberto Giacometti. At the center of the booth is Duane Hanson’s startling Window Washer (1984), a hyperrealistic male figure in contrapposto, flannel shirt open, holding a long- handled window squeegee. Chris Burden’s Sex Tower (Architectural Model of 125 foot high Sex Tower) (1986) proposes an erect gilded monument to coital union, while Urs Fischer's Marsupiale (2017), a full-size wax candle, depicts a man in a suit, embraced by a huge bust of a saint. The Erika Déak Gallery (Budapest) is focusing on Attila Szücs, whose idiosyncratic pictorial inventions are based on photographs. Delmes & Zander (Cologne), which specialises in outsider art, will show works of the Czech photographer Miroslav Tichy, who, from the 1960s on, took thousands of photos of women and girls on the street with his homemade cameras. Stella Hamberg, Tim Eitel and Martin Eder are among the successful and in demand positions in the programme of the gallery Eigen + Art (Berlin, Leipzig). With Arthur Löwen and Laura Schawelka, fiebach, minninger (Cologne) is introducing two young talents. The Konrad Fischer gallery (Düsseldorf) is showing new works of the Scot Jim Lambie, who works with coloured vinyl strips. Karsten Greve (Cologne, Paris, St. Moritz) will once again present top-class artists this year, such as Gotthard Graubner, Louise Bourgeois, Leiko Ikemura and Pierre Soulages. With the painter Alicia Viebrock, Bärbel Grässlin (Frankfurt) has a young artist in its programme who makes use of unconventional materials and methods for her gestural, intuitive and powerful painting. With Larry Bell, Mary Heilmann and Takesada Matsutani, Hauser & Wirth (Zurich, London, New York, Los Angeles) brings together three very different artist personalities at its stand, who all share geometric abstraction as a common denominator. Bell became known for his sophisticated treatment of glass surfaces and their light, reflection and shadow effects. He is represented at ART COLOGNE with glass sculptures and works on paper. Mary Heilmann, one of the leading representatives of contemporary abstract painting, is present with works from the last three decades, including "Little Red Boxes". Takesada Matsutani, member of the Gutai group, long experimented with vinyl glue, also in combination with graphite. Gallery Max Hetzler (Berlin, Paris) presents the Norwegian artist Ida Ekblad, as well as the sculptor Inge Mahn, who works almost exclusively with plaster. Kadel Willborn (Düsseldorf) shows the versatile American artist Barbara Kasten, who was only discovered internationally at a late date. Gallery Kleindienst (Leipzig) is focusing on graduates of the Leipzig Academy of Arts, like Henriette Grahnert, Julius Hoffmann and Christoph Ruckhäberle. Established positions like Alex Katz and
Tony Cragg will be juxtaposed by the gallery Bernd Klüser (Munich) with Lori Nix, Page who creates miniature worlds in meticulous manual work, which she then documents 3/6 with the camera. The star at the stand of the gallery Christine Koenig (Vienna) is the photographer Jürgen Teller, whose images stage actresses like Charlotte Rampling or Beatrice Dalle like figures in a "Tableau vivant". The Koenig gallery (Berlin) shows new sculptures from Alicja Kwade. The Eleni Koroneou Gallery (Athens) confronts two painters from different generations and traditions with one another in Helmut Middendorf and Alex Hubbard. Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler (Berlin) will show works of the artist collective "Slavs and Tatars". With Sylvie Fleury, the gallery Lange + Pult (Zurich) has an important feminist position in its programme. Christian Lethert (Cologne) juxtaposes established positions like Lutz Fritsch and Imi Knoebel with the young Natascha Schmitten, who composes her works from countless semi-transparent layers of paint. Lisson Gallery (London) is contesting its trade fair debut with Shirazeh Houshiary, who, in addition to Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon and others, belongs to the group of "New British Sculpture". Gallery Löhrl (Mönchengladbach) is coming with a fire gouache of Otto Piene from the year 1975, as well as with a colourful bronze from Stephan Balkenhol. Gió Marconi (Milan) represents the versatile German artist Kerstin Brätsch and will show new works by Oliver Osborne. Daniel Marzona (Berlin) is showing new material images from Olaf Holzapfel, which consist of straw and cacti fibres. Mario Mazzoli (Berlin) presents Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, who sets spaces into poetic motion with his interventions. He also has works by Nicola de Maria, one of the most important contemporary painters in Italy, in his programme. Gallery nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder (Vienna) presents works by Katharina Grosse, Caitlin Lonegan and Günter Umberg amongst others. Gallery Nagel/Draxler (Cologne, Berlin) is concentrating on Heimo Zobernig. Carolina Nitsch (New York) will be coming with the convolute "Ode á l' Oubli" by Louise Bourgeois. The gallery Vera Munro (Hamburg) will be bringing Imi Knoebel's important work "Transit" from the year 1988 with it, while another area of focus is on Günther Förg. Nanzuka (Tokyo) presents the versatile artist Hajime Sorayama, who became well known for his series of "Sexy Robots". Gallery Neu (Berlin) concentrates on the painter Birgit Megerle, whose feminist portraits are based on staged photos. The focus of the Pearl Lam Gallery (Hong Kong) is on the British painter Ged Quinn, whose allegorical images painted in the technique of the Old Masters contain citations of art history, as well as modern allusions and references. The highlight at Giorgio Persano (Turin) is a four metre- long mixed technique piece by Mario Merz from the year 1985. With Bogomir Ecker, the gallery Rupert Pfab (Düsseldorf) has an established position in its programme that is juxtaposed with the complex works of Lars Breuer, who redefines spaces with a self-designed typography. Petra Rinck (Düsseldorf) presents the brilliantly colourful paintings composed of pigments of the Graubner student Jörg Stoya. Thaddaeus Ropac (Salzburg, Paris) has a work of the artist duo Gilbert & George on offer. Philipp von Rosen (Cologne) will present works by Cody Choi, who represented Korea in 2017 at the Biennale di Venezia. With Francois Morellet and Maurizio Nannuci, Nicolaus Ruzicska (Salzburg) gathers two light artists at its stand. At Deborah Schamoni (Munich), the large-format, figurative-abstract paintings of the Irishwoman Aileen Murphy draw gazes; floating bodies are shown in
twisted poses. Murphy's practice is based on a dialogue with the Conditio Humana. Page The paintings are juxtaposed with sculptures by Judith Hopf. 4/6 Gallery Anke Schmidt offers new works of the New York-based David Reed, who is one of the most important representatives of abstract painting in the USA. Gallery Rüdiger Schöttle (Munich) is celebrating its 50-year existence with works of the Chinese artist Chen Wei, who creates stage-like settings with strong light effects, and with works by Thomas Ruff, for whom the gallery organised his first solo exhibition in 1981. The photo artist is present with the "Negatives" series. Sprüth Magers (Berlin, London, Los Angeles) has, among other works, a painting by Thomas Scheibitz on offer, whom the Kunstmuseum Bonn is currently honouring with a major exhibition. With Günter Fruhtrunk, Rupprecht Geiger and Sean Scully, the Walter Storms gallery (Munich) has prominent positions of contemporary abstract painting in its programme and has announced paintings of the Leipzig painter Peter Krauskopf fresh from the studio. Vartai (Vilnius) is debuting at ART COLOGNE with photographs of the artist duo Svajone and Paulius Stanikas. Gallery Wentrup (Berlin) has announced works by the renowned sculptor Olaf Metzel. With Antony Gormley, White Cube (London) also represents a prominent sculpture position. Zilberman Gallery (Istanbul, Berlin) presents Guido Casaretto, who experiments with the most varied materials to make the work processes visible. David Zwirner (New York) attracts with a painting of the high profile shooting star Oscar Murillo. Hall 11.1 Modern & Postwar Art Boisserée (Cologne) presents select works of the Spanish artist Eduardo Chillida and Joan Hernandez Pijuan, as well as a special event on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Karl Fred Dahmen, which will provide an overview of the career of the Stolberg-born artist with canvases, material images, object cases and works on paper. Derda (Berlin) is bringing a painting of the forgotten painter Arnold Topp, who was one of the major German Cubists and a member of the legendary artist group "Der Sturm". Dierking – Galerie am Paradeplatz (Zurich) focuses on the Zero artist Hermann Göpfert, who worked with space, motion and light. Döbele Kunst (Mannheim, Dresden) honours the photo artist Robert Häusser with a major solo show. 21 works from the years 1942 to 2009 provide a cross-section of Häusser's diverse oeuvre. His photography of a packed racecar from 1970 became an icon of the history of photography. The gallery Henze & Ketterer (Wichtrach/Bern) is showing an exhibition with their own concept at ART COLOGNE entitled "Meeresrauschen“ (Sound of the sea). The focus is on the work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and his colleagues from the artist group "Die Brücke". Kirchner is present with a "Stillleben mit Ente" (Still life with duck) and the oil painting "Ruderer “ (Rower) from the years 1928/29. With Alfred Hrdilcka and Joannis Avramidis, the gallery Ernst Hilger (Vienna) brings together two of the most important Austrian sculptors of the 20th century at its stand. Both focused on the human body and were very close friends. The gallery Konzett (Vienna) is showing works of the photo artist Rita Nowak, whose staged photographs contain references to art history that are contemporarily translated. Lahumière (Paris) is dedicating its presence with the Cubist Auguste Herbin and the Op Artist Victor Vasarely to prominent representatives of concrete-
constructive art. Lelong (Paris) trumps with a solo show of the Düsseldorf painter Page Konrad Klapheck. The gallery Le Minotaure (Paris) is bringing a rare work by Hans 5/6 Arp with it to Cologne, as well as a still life by Serge Charchoune, who was also a member of the Dada movement. Gallery Ruberl (Vienna) offers works by Oskar Kokoschka, Arnulf Rainer and Günter Brus, which are confronted by the paintings of Michael Horsky. Highlights of Florian Sundheimer (Munich) are Paul Klee's painting "Ereignis im Park“ (Incident in the park) from the year 1938 and his chalk drawing " nach dem Fall“ (after the fall). With Pierre Tal Coat he also has an important representative of the "École de Paris“ in his programme, who was one of the cofounders of Tachism. At the Galerie Thomas (Munich), a colour space body by Gotthard Graubner from the year 1974 will draw just as many gazes to it as Jim Dine's intensely colourful " Night Garden". With Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's "Boudoir-Szene" from the year 1908, the Galerie Utermann (Dortmund) offers a small-format masterpiece. The focus at the stand of Valentien (Stuttgart) is on works by Max Ernst, while one highlight is the frottage "Foret" from the year 1935. Also exceptional is the large-format painting " Largo" of the German-American artist Hilla von Rebay, a pioneer of abstract painting. Of expected high quality is the stand of von Vertes (Zurich). Among this year's highlights are a mobile by Alexander Calder, a "Concetto spaziale" from Lucio Fontana and a painting by Jean-Paul Riopelle. At the stand of the Whitestone Gallery (Tokyo, Hong Kong), works of the Gutai artists Yuko Nasaka, Aine Kinashi and Chiyu Uemae are the attraction. Hall 11.3 NEUMARKT and COLLABORATIONS The gallery 22,48m2 (Paris) is bringing works by Bianca Biondi with it to its first appearance at ART COLOGNE, while the trade fair debut of Alma (Riga) concentrates on new works of the Latvian artist Eriks Apalais, who develops a reduced system of painterly references on a matte black image surface. Clages (Cologne) will show works of Claus Richter. The eye-catchers at the stand of the gallery Crèvecoeur (Paris), represented for the first time at ART COLOGNE, are the sculptures of Renaud Jerez, who creates hybrid entities of human being and machine from the most varied materials. Gallery DREI (Cologne) is bringing works by Megan Rooney and Tiril Hasselknippe. The showstoppers at the stand of Future (Berlin) are the sculptural works of Nicolas Pelzer. Jan Kaps (Cologne) is organising a solo show for the young Swiss artist Emanuel Rossetti; the Gallery Kiche (Seoul) presents the Korean artists Meeyoung Kim, Myoungho Lee and Seungcheo Ok. Kai Matsumiya (New York) has Pedro Wirz in its programme, who is represented with a work in the sculpture garden in the Riehler Straße. The Polansky Gallery (Prague) presents works by Kristof Kintera, who combines everyday objects in an irritating manner, and in this way assigns them new meaning. Sperling (Munich) is celebrating its trade fair debut with the painter and sculptor Veronika Hilger, who will show a series of new works that balance between representationalism and abstraction, while taking up the classic themes of landscape and still life. Supportico Lopez (Berlin) represents the Brazilian Adriano Costa, who is currently present in the Kölnischer Kunstverein with an exhibition. Union Pacific (London) will show canvas paintings by Max Ruf. Barbara Wien
(Berlin) is showing works of the current Wolfgang-Hahn Prizewinner Haegue Yang, to Page whom the Museum Ludwig is dedicating an exhibition. 6/6 COLLABORATIONS Guido B. Baudach (Berlin) is cooperating with the Düsseldorf-based gallery Van Horn. The Berlin resident is showing sculptures by Björn Dahlem, which are confronted by works of Ulrike Schulz. At their pavilion, Isabella Bortoluzzi (Berlin) and Fons Welters (Amsterdam) are presenting the artists Juliette Blightman and Olga Balema, who have already worked together often. The Gillmeier Rech (Berlin) and Weiss Falk (Basel) galleries, who will be bringing together works by Max Schmidtlein and Veit Laurenz Kurz at their stand, are debuting this year. Together with Project Native Informant (London), the gallery Max Mayer (Düsseldorf) is presenting a new video installation of the Canadian artist Melanie Gilligan, for whom the Kölnischer Kunstverein already organised a solo show in 2010. Esther Schipper (Berlin), nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder (Vienna) and Jocelyn Wolff (Paris) are coming to Cologne with works from Isa Melsheimer, who works with simple materials that are re-contextualised and compiled anew.
