Dartmoor National Park
Wild, open moorlands and deep river valleys, with a rich
history and rare wildlife, Dartmoor is a unique place. It’s a
protected landscape and is here for everyone to enjoy, but
it’s fragile and needs to be cared for.

Dartmoor has a rich heritage waiting to be discovered,
from Bronze Age to Medieval through to the present
day. The habitats and landscapes are some of the most
inspirational for poets, authors, flmmakers and artists.

Dartmoor is home to an abundance of rare and distinctive
wildlife, an important reserve for some very rare plants
and animals, more than half of Britain’s population of
globally threatened species are on Dartmoor. These
include the Greater Horseshoe Bat, Blue Ground Beetle,
Bog Hoverfy and Flax-leaved St John’s-wort. Dartmoor
also has nationally important populations of Dormouse,
Cirl Bunting, High Brown Fritillary, Pearl-bordered Fritillary,
Marsh Fritillary, Freshwater Shrimp, Deptford Pink
wildfowers and of course the otter – a globally threatened

standing tall on plinths waiting for the faithful following
of otter-spotters. Trail maps will be available to help with
navigation and competitions will be included.

funds Raised
In 2017 the Moor Otters arts trail raised £60k for
conservation and education projects on Dartmoor. The
Otter sculptures provided an unusual canvas for artists
to have some fun and to share important messages from
environmental topics through to mental health and
well-being. They also provided a fantastic medium for
raising the artists’ profle in the public and creative domain.

The money raised from Moor Otters arts trail 2017
supported three key projects:

Why an Otter?
Inspired by the elusive river otter the models have been
specially commissioned and created by Jolly Roger Ltd
in Bovey Tracey. The otter has made a come-back on
Dartmoor over the last 18 years and the Moor Otters arts
trail celebrates this shy and secretive creature who loves
to play in Dartmoor’s rivers.

Did you know…
• River otters can hold their breath for 8 minutes.
• An otter’s home is his holt.
• Otters store food under their arms pits – who needs a
  shopping bag.

• One square inch of otter fur has approximately 1 million
  hairs.
• Otters eat between 15-25% of their body weight every
  day.
• A group of otters is called a romp. Vector H

The Practical Stuff
The Sculpture
Each selected artist will be given a smooth hand
cast Otter and cub sculpture coated with a
ready-to-paint-onto primer.

Preparing the Otter
We suggest that you start by applying additional
primer to ensure better adhesion of paint to the
surface. Depending on the nature of your design,
this will also increase paint durability and provide
additional protection.

Applying Your Design
Naturally, we encourage you to be as wild as you like
with the material. We confrm that the Otters will be
strong, durable and produced to an extremely high
standard. If you intend to modify their structure,
please talk to us frst.

The Plinth
A four foot tall coated marine ply structure is provided
to proudly display your Moor Otter. Your Moor Otter
will be secured to the plinth via two hidden internal
bolts. Ballast to weigh the plinth and sculpture down
can be added on site as required. A plaque with
your name, your Otter title and relevant sponsor
and competition information will also be fxed to the
plinth.

Materials Allowance and Commission
There is no cost for receiving a Moor Otter.
All selected artists will receive a materials allowance
of £100. You will also receive 10% sales commission on
the fnal hammer price. Alternatively you may choose

to donate either or both of these payments to the
project - just state your preference on page 15.

Some More Practical Stuff
Protection
Please apply an exterior grade varnish to your
sculpture so that your work is best protected. Moor
Otters will be positioned in outdoor venues as well as
interior locations but all designs must be suitable for
outdoor display. You will need to give them a good
coat of varnish for protection - we both want them to
last.

Delivery and Collection
A Moor Otter will be delivered to and collected from
the single nominated address that you indicate. If you
wish to then work in a diferent studio or location, the
Otter is compact enough to ft into a standard car.

Restoration
Should your Otter be damaged, you are the best
person for any restoration required. We hope this will
not be needed, but should it be, we would appreciate
your help in repairing it before the live auction which
takes place in September 2020. In the case of
restoration work required on your Moor Otter, we will
deliver it to you in order to make the repairs. Once the
repairs have been undertaken, we will then collect it
from you.

Promotion
The Otter will remain the property of Dartmoor
National Park throughout the process until being
adopted or sold at auction. On completion, the Otters
will be photographed, catalogued and promoted on
the website for auction. Dartmoor National Park has
the right to photograph, flm and replicate the Otters
in any way it deems ft in accordance with its own
