Arts & Culture
Tours Explained
Cox & Kings’ expert-accompanied Arts & Culture tours focus on
human creativity in its many forms. This collection has been
created for everyone who has a love for the arts and who seeks a
deeper understanding about how artistry of all kinds developed in
the past and influences living culture today. While most of these
tours have a particular focus or theme, they are designed to give
the participants a real sense of place, revealing far more than a
succession of museums.

The experts who accompany these tours work with Cox & Kings’
in-house specialists to design these itineraries and, in many cases,
they are able to open doors that are closed to the general public.
Most of the tours also include encounters with inspiring local
people who are immersed in the continuation and evolution of
cultural traditions today. These may include craftsmen, artisans,
curators, designers, chefs, perfumers, wine-growers, gardeners, and
even nuns. Look out for the ‘C&K Signature Experiences’ and other
special visits described on the tour pages.

Ultimately, it is the knowledge and enthusiasm of the experts,
coupled with the pleasure of travelling with like-minded people, as
much as the artistic and cultural treasures themselves, which make
these tours so fulfilling. Monks at Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia

     Tour overview

     New architecture defines Rotterdam,
a city that has constantly re-invented
itself over the past century in a bold
style distinct from other towns in the
Netherlands. In the 1920s and 1930s,
     the Nieuwe Bouwen architectural
movement used light, air and space to
form the sleek lines of the Van Nelle
factory. It became “the most beautiful
spectacle of the modern age” according
to Le Corbusier. At the same time,
     De Stijl artists, including Mondrian,
created a new style of abstract art
using the geometry of straight lines.
Their influence continued in the 1970s,
when Piet Blom tilted cubes on their
ends and created his vision - a forest of Cube houses, Rotterdam

     Architect Walter Gropius launched

 Bay of Naples:
 Pompeii & Herculaneum

     Tour overview

Uncover the mysteries of the Bay
of Naples, once one of the greatest
     centres of classical Graeco-Roman
     civilisation, with experts Dr Steve
     Kershaw or Stephen Nelson. The
     excavated remains of Pompeii, Stabiae
and Villa Oplontis, entombed in ash in
the Mount Vesuvius eruption of 79AD,
provide a glimpse into this lost world.
     Herculaneum, covered in mud rather
than ash, is remarkably well preserved,
     with multi-storey buildings, frescoes
and mosaics on show. The region’s
     Greek highlights include Cumae, the
Sibyl’s Cave and the imposing temples
     of Paestum.
