Athletic Department
Student Handbook
Midwest Athletic Conference
Highlighted items denotes changes/updates from previous year.Athletic Department Mission Statement
The goal of the New Knoxville Local School athletic department shall be to enhance the
academic program by providing students with the opportunity to participate in wholesome and
friendly competition. Within a competitive environment, student-athletes will learn proper skill
technique, good sportsmanship, and the value of teamwork allowing each to develop to his or
her fullest potential.
Risk While Participating
Each year in the U.S. over 4 million students participate in interscholastic athletics.
Sports participation provides the following advantages:
● Strenuous physical conditioning
● Sport skill development
● Increased speed, coordination, agility, flexibility, and endurance
● Increased self-discipline and ability to work with others
● Challenging one’s physical and psychological limits
● Learning loyalty to a situation, cause, school, and nation
While the benefits are numerous, it is important to recognize that each time you participate in
athletics, you are assuming certain risks. It is nearly a certainty that all who participate will
experience some type of injury during their athletic career. Many injuries are short term and
recovery is rapid. Other injuries may be long term and could result in permanent disability.
Certain risks are greater in contact activities where chances of injury to the head, neck, and
spinal cord are greatest. As a result, each sport encompasses certain rules and regulations that
are designed to protect all participants:
● Wearing the proper equipment
● Being properly conditioned
● Exercising good judgment at all times
With these thoughts in mind, parents/guardians/custodians and students are urged to consider
the risks involved before participating in any interscholastic program.
Scholarship
OHSAA Policy
https://ohsaa.org/Portals/0/Eligibility/OtherEligibiltyDocs/EligibilityGuidelinesGuidanceCoun
selors.pdf
High school students (grades 7-12) must be currently enrolled in a member school and have
received passing grades in a minimum of five (5) one credit courses, or the equivalent, in the
immediately preceding grading period.
● You may not use summer school grades for failing grades received or lack of courses
taken in the final grading period.
● Your semester and yearly grades have no effect on eligibility.● Those taking postsecondary courses must comply with OHSAA scholarship regulations.
A student will be eligible or ineligible for the next grading period beginning the fifth school day
after the end of each grading period. Ineligibility will remain until the date set forth by OHSAA
regulation
New Knoxville Weekly Policy
To be eligible on a weekly basis, students must have maintained from the beginning of each
grading period up to the end of the week preceding that in which the event occurs, passing
grades in all subjects except one. Teachers will inform students who are failing each Friday (or
the following Monday) that they are failing in their class(es).
An eligibility check will be run after the 4th week of the nine weeks (interim) and again at the
nine week point. If a student is failing 2 or more subjects, they will be ineligible to participate
in any played events (not to exceed two) for that week. In order to play after two events,
evidence must be shown to AD and principal by the student that he/she has made efforts to
improve grades, turn work in, retake tests, etc. One week of ineligibility runs from 8:00 am
Monday until 8:00 am the following Monday even if grade rises to passing during the week.
A failure list will still be run every week, however. This will be shared with all staff and
coaches. Specific coach or sport policy will supersede this policy and will allow coaches to
sit/bench/limit playing time, etc. if students are carrying failing grades.
Attendance
To participate in practice or a scheduled game, a student is not to be absent from school
because of illness or non-excused absence the afternoon of that school day. The afternoon
defined as beginning at 11:51 a.m. and continuing for the final 4 periods of the day.
Emergency exceptions may be permitted by the principal.

Dual Sport Participation
New Knoxville student athletes may be afforded the opportunity to participate in two school
sponsored sports during the same sport season. Student athletes must notify the athletic
director of their intent prior to the start of the preseason practice for both sports. The athletic
director will then conference with the head coaches of both sports, parents, and student
athlete to determine if it is in the best interest of the athlete and teams involved. Approval will
be granted/denied on a case-by-case basis. Before a student is fully committed, a calendar for each month of that sport's season should be
created (noting practices and games, designated by sport), and signed by both coaches,
student, and parents.
Junior High Athletics
PRACTICE DAYS: If practice is scheduled for 4:30 pm or later, players must exit the building at
the 2:55 bell (exceptions would be tutoring, detention, or owing time to the office). They
should not return to school until 15 minutes prior to their scheduled practice time.
GAME DAYS: Players and cheerleaders may stay in the cafeteria from 2:55 pm until 4:00 pm. If
food is brought from home or purchased at the Village Market, it must be eaten in the cafeteria
(no food in the locker rooms). No players should be in the gymnasium, locker rooms, or
hallways prior to 4:00 pm. At 4:00 pm players will be allowed to shoot baskets and begin
warming up for the game. This will allow time for the visitors’ locker room and gymnasium to
be cleaned and set up for the game.

participate and have a positive athletic experience. It is also the understanding of the athletic
council and coaches that there are only a certain number of athletes who can be educated and
instructed by one coach in one facility. At the junior high level, when the number of students intending to play a particular 7 th or 8th
grade sport exceeds 15, the coach may hold an evaluation period and cut the squad down to 15
members. The evaluation period must last a minimum of three practices, and a conference
must be conducted by the coach with each student who was cut.
At the high school level, the final number of team members shall be determined at the head
coach’s discretion. The coach’s evaluation period will last a minimum of three practices, and a
conference must be conducted by the coach with each student who was cut.
Public Complaints and Grievances
As stated in Board Policy 9130: “Any person or group having a legitimate interest in the
operations of this District shall have the right to present a request, suggestion, complaint, or
grievance concerning District personnel, the program, or the operations of the District. At the
same time, the Board of Education has a duty to protect its staff from unnecessary harassment.
It is the intent of this policy to provide the means for judging each public complaint and
grievance in a fair and impartial manner and to seek a remedy where appropriate.”
We encourage all interested parties to become familiar with the procedures outlined in this
policy as stated below:
It is the desire of the Board to rectify any misunderstandings between the public and the
District by direct discussions of an informal type among the interested parties. It is only when
such informal meetings fail to resolve the differences, shall more formal procedures be
employed.
Any requests, suggestions, complaints, or grievances reaching the Board, Board members, and
the administration shall be referred to the Superintendent for consideration according to the
following procedure:
Matters Regarding a Professional Staff Member
A. First Level
If it is a matter specifically directed toward a professional staff member, the matter must be
addressed, initially, to the concerned staff member who shall discuss it promptly with the
complainant and make every effort to provide a reasoned explanation or take appropriate
action within his/her authority and District administrative guidelines.
This level does not apply if the matter involves suspected child abuse, substance abuse, or
any other serious allegation which may require investigation or inquiry by school officials
prior to approaching the professional staff member.B. Second Level
If the matter cannot be satisfactorily resolved at the First Level, it shall be discussed by the
complainant with the staff member’s supervisor and in compliance with provisions of a
collective bargaining agreement, if applicable.
C. Third Level
If a satisfactory solution is not achieved, a written request for a conference shall be
submitted to the Superintendent. This request should include:
1. the specific nature of the complaint and a brief statement of the facts giving rise to it;
2. the respect in which it is alleged that the complainant (or child of the complainant) has
been affected adversely;
3. the action which the complainant wishes taken and the reasons why it is felt that such
action be taken.
Should the matter be resolved in conference with the Superintendent, the Board shall be
advised of the resolution.
D. Fourth Level
Should the matter not be resolved, or if it is one beyond the Superintendent’s authority and
requires a Board decision or action, the complainant shall request, in writing, a hearing by
the Board.
The Board, after reviewing the material related to the case, shall provide the complainant
with its written decision or grant a hearing.
The complainant shalt be advised, in writing, of the Boards decision, no more than ten (10)
business days following the hearing.
Matters Regarding an Administrative Member
Since administrators are considered members of the District’s professional staff, the general
procedure specified in “Matters Regarding a Professional Staff Member” shall be followed.
Matters Regarding a Classified Staff Member
In the case of a classified staff member, the same procedure is to be followed as for “Matters
Regarding a Professional Staff Member.”
