STEINBRENNER SPORTS MARKETING
STUDENTS ORGANIZE YOU MATTER WEEK
Mahika Anand had seen enough anxiety and stress in the
halls of Steinbrenner High School. So, the senior and her
friends decided to do something about it.

"We decided that mental health is something we really
needed to bring awareness to, especially since (the stress of
COVID) was taking a toll on a lot of people," says Mahika.

Spearheaded by the school's Sports Marketing DECA club
members, You Matter Week was a student-run embrace of
any student dealing with depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD
and eating disorders.

Resources and videos were provided for kids. Joyful
supportive walls of positive affirmations went up, as did a wall
highlighting celebrities who have spoken or written about their
own mental illness.

The idea was to destigmatize needing, and asking for, help.

Not only did the school's administration embrace the student-
led initiative, teachers approved a "No Homework Day" to
give the Steinbrenner student body a collective mental break. YOU MATTER WEEK EMBRACED
                                                                             STUDENTS WITH:
"This came at a perfect time," says school psychologist
Katharine Wiles. "Students want to be heard, they want to be ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Eating Disorders and OCD
acknowledged. They want us to know how difficult it is for
them."

MARSHALL MIDDLE
   CULINARY STUDENTS HAVE
   THE RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

Culinary students at Marshall Middle Magnet
are cooking up quite the recipe to success! In
addition to making tasty items such as donuts
and eggs, Ms. Chin’s eighth-grade Principles of
Food Prep students are earning high school
credit—all in preparation of being our district's
first middle school culinary students to earn
   their ServSafe industry certification.

“I try to teach them the difference between
   being ordinary and extraordinary,” said
Michelle Chin, Marshall Middle’s Culinary Arts
teacher. “They may not all work in the culinary
industry, but they should strive to be
extraordinary in everything they should do.”

Spend a few minutes in Ms. Chin’s class and
you will see that she sets the bar high—doing
everything in her power to help all her students
achieve that extraordinary status. Between her
YouTube cooking channel and catch phrases
such as, “Tag it and bag it,” and, “When in
doubt, wash it out,” Ms. Chin creates a
   memorable learning experience for all.

      GOOD LUCK MARSHALL MIDDLE

THE RESEARCH WAS JUST FOR FUN...AND
NOW THEY'RE PUBLISHED AUTHORS
Middleton High Biotechnology students Ojas Kalia and Tanu Bondu are now
officially published authors. The two seniors received this exciting news
when they found out that their independent research articles were published
in the International Journal of High School Research (IJHSR).

Believe it or not, these independent research
                    projects were not class assignments—the
students took it upon themselves to develop Tanu Bondu - Middleton High School
                    their own research.

Ojas Kalia’s research addresses a globally significant problem regarding the
disposal of plastic waste. Her six-page essay focuses on, "What is the Effect
of a Mixed Culture of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Anabaena on the
Degradation of Polyvinyl chloride?”

Tanu Bondu was also published in the IJHSR. Her thirteen-page essay looks
at social perceptions of individuals while focusing on Ketsueki-gata—
analyzing an individual’s personality based on their blood type.

“It is amazing to be at a school where I have students who are motivated to
take on projects outside the classroom and stretch their imagination and
engage in rigorous scientific studies,” said Alexandre da Silva, Middleton
Ojas Kalia - Middleton High School
High’s Biotechnology teacher.

Ojas and Tanu are not the only Biotechnology students completing research projects.

Rishi Nair (11th Grade) is looking for unique ways that we can naturally improve a person's health via their diet. Classmate Bhavya
Bansal (10th Grade) is looking at how to reduce the communal spread of Sar-CoV2 via self-administered low cost at home COVID-19
tests.

Mr. da Silva takes great pride in his program, but he credits colleagues such as Mrs. Dodson, Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Kulkarni for providing
Middleton’s Biotechnology students with an exceptional foundation.

"Our students are industrious and have the intellectual curiosity and demand to be challenged,” said Mr. da Silva. “I am truly humbled to
work here at Middleton and honored to be their advisor on these independent research projects.”

Hillsborough Career Pathways Network (HCPN) is the professional organization

and looks forward to returning to hosting events in 2021-2022.
