St Martins Lutheran College Newsletter Term 3 Week 6 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE
HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL
Horas Horas!
Recently, St Martins Lutheran College celebrated Horas Day. This was
a special fundraiser that the College has done for the last three years in
support of our partner school, SDHKI3 in Indonesia.
This year our students - and that means families too - were very generous and
donated over $900! This sort of generosity will make an immense difference to their school.
Just last week, Brenda May, our Junior School Learning Enrichment Coordinator and I had the
pleasure of sharing this news via a Zoom chat with the Principal and teachers of SDHKI3. They were
extremely grateful and will use the funds to provide home learning packs including stationery for
their students as well as extend the wifi in their school.
You see, their students have not been able to attend school since March 2020. The teachers come
in every day to empty classrooms where they create short videos to send to their students. For
students that do not have access to internet, they will make a home visit to share some teaching
and instruction for ongoing learning. The students miss seeing their friends and the teachers miss
the students dearly. Even though we can not travel to the school now or in the near future, St
Martins Lutheran College will continue its partnership with this small Lutheran Elementary School
in Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra Indonesia. We will support them with our thoughts, prayers,
kindness and connection. Over the coming years we will use the technology to stay connected,
our thoughts and prayers to keep them uplifted and our hope that someday things can return to
the new normal for them.

THE MUSICAL
SHREK THE MUSICAL
2021 stage performance a smash hit!
As the curtain draws closed on Shrek the Musical,
we can reflect on what a fantastic show it has
been!
Over two nights, St Martins Lutheran College
brought the much-loved story of Shrek to the Sir
Robert Helpmann Theatre.
This production gave our Middle and Senior
School Students the opportunity to showcase their
talents to the wider community.
We must thank everyone that has been involved
in the production, from set construction, set
painting, make up artistry, backstage roles and
especially the orchestra, it truly was a whole-
school effort.
A big thank you must go to our wonderful Drama
Teacher and Director of Shrek the Musical, Andy
Ahrens.

On the Wednesday morning of Week 6, the College’s Junior School presented their annual Book Week Parade! There was a mix of fun costumes, with many students inspired to dress up as characters from their favourite books! The theme for this year’s Book Week is ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’. While unfortunately we couldn’t welcome families and guests to the College Gym for the parade, we hope they had the chance to catch the live stream.

PHOEBE AND DONKEY
Year 5 Student creates special small business.
My name is Phoebe Kemp and I am in Mr Bonds 5B
Class. I’ve recently started my little business called
Phoebe and Donkey, with my best friend Donkey.
What makes Donkey a best friend? He’s been by
my side for 11 years. When I was sick he attended
all my hospital appointments, he was by my side
in the MRI and he was also by my side in surgery
when I had my brain tumour removed.
Donkey always cheered me up. So I created and
designed mini gift cards with donkey on them. I
have also designed socks and a website - www.
phoebeanddonkey.com
I hope by creating these gift cards they may help
to brighten up or make people smile.
MUSIC EISTEDDFOD
Students perform well at local competition.
In Week 5, a large number of College Students
performed at the Music Eisteddfod. Three students
did particularly well;
Emily Meier - Under 16 Brass scholarship winner.
Annabelle Mossford MacGregor - Under 16 Piano
scholarship.
Elizabeth Barnett - Came second in the scholarship
section for her age group on piano and was
awarded a Lions Club trophy.
This is an excellent effort, especially as the three
also performed last week in Shrek the Musical.
A fantastic level of commitment to their musical
passions!St Martins Lutheran College Newsletter | Term 3 Week 6 Page 7
FUNDRAISING PRESENTATION
Junior School disco fundraising presented to the Salvation Army.
It was a pleasure to have Captain Judy Shaw of the The Salvation Army
Australia attend our Junior School Assembly in Week 5.
At the end of Term 2, the College’s Junior SRC held a disco to raise funds
for the Salvation Army, with the proceeds going towards providing
support to local families at Christmas time.
Captain Judy presented the Junior College Captains, Liam and Sophie,
with a certificate of appreciation for the donation.
LIBRARY NEWS
Our annual book fair will commence in Week 8, from Monday 6 to Friday 10
September. Year 2 and 6 classes will have a preview the preceding week as
their lessons are late in the week.
The book fair will be conducted online. Students will get a chance to view the
books and other items during their library lessons in Week 8 and your child will
then bring home a wish list and catalogue. They will be told that if they are
allowed to purchase something it will only be with Mum/Dad’s permission. On
the back of the wish list will be the details of how secure credit card payments
may be made. The record of payment receipt (on the back of the wish list) must
be filled out and brought along to school by your child or presented at the front
office in an envelope so that your child may receive their purchases. Further
instructions will be available closer to the book fair. Please email our dedicated
email address if you have any concerns: library@stmartins.sa.edu.au
OPEN GIRLS HOCKEY
St Martins Lutheran College was very excited this year to have
enough female hockey players in the secondary school to enter
a squad for the first time in the Open Girls tournament. In each
area of the state, teams play a round robin competition, with the
winners meeting in Adelaide for the finals. However, due to the
recent lockdown, our local games were cancelled and both St
Martins & Grant High School were asked to come straight to the
finals in Adelaide! The girls demonstrated a fantastic attitude all
day and played well as a team – even though we didn’t have
time for training together! Although we were defeated by Henley
High School, Scotch College & St Mark’s College, we did very
well considering these schools had won against the other schools
in their area and had mostly senior students in their squads.
Grant High School has a history of being in the grand final for this event and also winning it overall in recent
years. We played them last and they made it clear to us that they thought they were going to beat us easily.
In the first half, Grant had a number of strong shots on goal, and Abbey Gerritsen made the same number
of great saves. It was extremely tense and nil all at half time. In the last few minutes of the game, we started
to get excited at the idea of a draw. Our defenders were amazing and Abbey continued to make saves.
Suddenly in the last 30 seconds, an excellent long ball went down to our centre-forward Chloe Boylan who
single-handedly took on their last defender and goalie, to score the match winning goal! We couldn’t contain
our excitement, and we all agreed it felt like we had won the grand final.

PARENTS AND FRIENDS INDIGENOUS
MENTOR VISIT
Mentor catches up with College students.
St Martins Lutheran College’s Adelaide-
based Indigenous mentor, Sara, visited
us last week and spent two days visiting
students in classes. The sunny weather also
invited some catch-up time outside.
Sara will be back to visit in Week 9 of this
term.
MIXED HOCKEY COMPETITION
Entering the mixed hockey competition has become an annual tradition for the College, and we have
been to Adelaide for the finals many times which makes the local matches quite nerve-racking because
we don’t want to miss out! Our first local game was against Tenison, which we won comfortably 5-1. Our
second game was against a combined team of Naracoorte and Lucindale. This was a significantly harder
game than we were expecting and the 3-1 final score didn’t reflect the challenge. At the finals in Adelaide
our scores were:
3-3 draw with Glossop High School (after being 3-0 down
in the first half, we made an amazing come-back to
score 3 goals in 6 minutes).
3-0 win against Keith High School
3-0 win against Kadina High School
0-0 draw with Unley High School
4-0 win against Adelaide High School
1-3 defeated by Pembroke School
Well done to everyone, it was a fantastic team effort. The
Saints came third overall - just one point behind second
place, Glossop. However, the overall winner Pembroke
defeated Glossop 5-0. We were also the only school to
score against Pembroke all day. Overall the team had a
great day and (basically) came second…!
