Bachelor-Arbeiten BSc Bauing - FS 2022

Titel der Bachelor- Calcination of sulfidic tailings
Arbeit:

Betreuer der Natalia Pires Martins
Bachelorarbeit:

Beschreibung: The incorporation of several types of wastes and by-
products in the production of construction materials is a
way to reduce CO2 emissions in the construction
insdustry and to provide alternatives for the management
of wastes within the circular economy. Currently, sulfidic
tailings are a large volume waste stream which is not yet
utilized in the production of contruction materials.

This thesis will explore the potential of calcined sulfidic
tailings as a partial replacement for cement. For that,
sulfidic tailings calcined under different conditions will
                         undergo chemical, physical and mineralogical
characterization, after which mortars will be produced
                         and tested in the lab.

Titel der Bachelor- Characterization of alternative clinkers produced
Arbeit: from mine waste

Betreuer der Natalia Pires Martins, Yi Du
Bachelorarbeit:

Beschreibung: The development of low CO2 clinkers is one of the
strategies to reduce the overal CO2 emissions in cement
and concrete production. For the calcium sulfoaluminate
clinker type, several sulfur-rich wastes can be potentially
                         implemented as alternative raw materials.

In this bachelor thesis, the student will become familiar
with the use of thermogravimetric and mass
                         spectrometric (TG-MS) analysis to chemically
characterize alternative clinkers produced from sulfidic
mine tailings. The extent of sulfur incorporation and
heavy metal volatilization and the reactivity of the
                         clinkers will be investigated.

Titel der Bachelor- Lab at home to determine the accuracy of earth on-
Arbeit: site characterization

Betreuer der Daria Ardant, Dr. Coralie Brumaud
Bachelorarbeit:

Beschreibung: Earth is a building resource with many advantages. It is
available everywhere, it has the best recycling potential,
and its transformation into building material release low
CO2 emission. As a bad consequence of all these
qualities, the earth is not a robust and known material.
Its variability limits its use at an industrial scale, as the
excavated earth needs to be analyzed with experts on-
site or lab equipment are required. Moreover, it has been
shown during construction sites that results obtained by
on-site characterization are highly linked to the expert
doing them. Consequenlty, no general data can be
provided, and as no robust material can be developed on
an industrial scale, earth constructions remain marginals.

This bachelor thesis aims to work on the reproductibility
of on-site testing. Each student will receive three earth
from excavation sites and small lab equipment for testing
at home. Different kinds of analysis as to be done at
                         home (granulometry, shrinkage, Atterberg limits,
rheology, sample preparation for a compression test,…),
and some will be done at the lab to set a global
relationship between on site caracterization and lab
                         accuracy (methylen blue value, compression
strength,…). All results will be compared between
students to determine which tests are relevant and which
ones are not robust enough to be used as references for
                         earth construction.

Titel der Bachelor- Layer interface strength for 3D printing of earth-
Arbeit: based materials

Betreuer der Julie Assunção
Bachelorarbeit:

Beschreibung: 3D printing by extrusion deposit of layers has been
intensively studied in the last decades, mostly using
concrete. Trying to adapt this technique with earth-based
materials has a big potential since is it well known their
low environmental impact. Controlling and understanding
the layer interface strength is therefore often a
challenge. In the literature, we could find some different
approaches to evaluate this parameter: mechanical tests
(compression or 3-points flexural test) and penetration
tests. This thesis will address the possible
mechanical/geological tests to evaluate the application of
                         earth-based material with additive manufacturing
                         techniques.

Arbeit: LCA and cost

Betreuer der Julie Assunção, Anastasija Komkova
Bachelorarbeit:

Beschreibung: As digital construction with earth-based materials has
received more visibility lately, there is also a need to
evaluate the life cycle analysis and costs of this new
technique. For this purpose, a general approach of the
main concepts that permeate this so-called digitalization
of construction with earth will be the focus of this thesis.
It will then be necessary to compare consolidated
techniques, such as cob and adobe, with the relatively
new ones, like layer deposition (3D printing).

Titel der Bachelor- LCA recycled concrete
Arbeit:

Betreuer der Edwin Zea, Anastasija Komkova
Bachelorarbeit:

Beschreibung: Recycled concrete is widely used in Switzerland and
allows to reduce ressource consumption,. but not
necessarily the other environmental impacts (dust,
carbon footprint,…). This situation is not necessarily the
                         same in other European countries.

During this project, we aim to have a broad overview of
current situation in the different EU countries as well as
an update on the Swiss situation. The bachelor thesis
will have to conduct a review of the processes used for
concrete recycling as well as their environmental impact.

If time and interest, GIS based modelling of ressource
and supply and best recycling strategies for reducing
environmental impact can be conducted for the Swiss
                         case.
