2019
AC, Rhône, France
74229 (XD) 750 mL $18.95 2
TASTING NOTE: The 2019 Cotes du Rhone
Villages Plan de Dieu is everything a good
example from the region should be. It’s fruity
and direct without being simple, showing
notes of red raspberries, sun-warmed stones
and just hints of garrigue and dark chocolate.
It’s full-bodied and rich without being jammy.
It even shows decent length and silky
tannins on the finish. Nicely done! Drink date:

     Man of few words? Some
     reviewers tend to be more
     succinct in their reviews than
others. This says less about the
     wine being reviewed than the
     reviewer’s personal style, which
is why even a wine scoring big
     points might be accompanied
by a short review. In some ways,
a big score speaks for itself.

        Ghostwritten tasting notes?
If we publish a review without
        naming the reviewer, it usually
means one of two things: either
        the publication only has one
writer and the clue is in the

or the review is from a panel

Let’s talk tannins. When
reviews mention tannins, it’s
often in reference to light,
medium or heavy tannins.
They might also mention how
smooth, subtle or integrated
they are in some wines versus
how firm, bold or overt they are
in others. Some wines even start
with overt (“brambly”) tannins
before a smooth, silky finish.
Whatever the case, a good wine
will be balanced.

Potential “uptick in score”?
One of the exciting things about
wine is that it changes over
time. Reviewers take this into
account when assigning scores,
projecting a wine’s overall
quality into the future. Some
wines exhibit the potential to
drastically improve, which is
why reviewers often re-evaluate
wines multiple times over the
course of their evolution.

     When reviewers say “drink now,”
it doesn’t mean the wine’s best
days are behind it – some such
wines might drink well for a decade
or more – but simply that the wine
isn’t likely to improve with further

KNOW
THE SCORE
It pays to be familiar with the concept and context of various rating systems, from the 100- and
20-point scales to stars and wineglasses. Of course, the numbers don’t tell the whole story – it’s
important to find critics whose palates align with your own, and read the full tasting notes to get a
deeper sense of the wine. Here’s a quick roundup of some rating systems frequently seen in our
Vintages releases.

The 100-Point System The 3-Star/Glass Scales
Popularized by Robert Parker Jr. in the early 1980s and French and Italian wine guides Le Guide Hachette and
now used by most mainstream critics, the 100-point Gambero Rosso Italian Wines both use scales out of 3.
scoring system revolutionized the wine world. In Parker’s Similar to the Michelin Guide for restaurants, it’s an
system, every wine is automatically given 50 points; honour even to be mentioned in these guides.
further points are awarded for colour and appearance
(up to 5), aroma (up to 15), flavour and finish (up to 20) Le Guide Hachette
and overall quality (up to 10). The 100-point system is HHH = Exceptional wine
embraced by publications such as Wine Spectator, HHK = Remarkable wine
Wine Enthusiast and Decanter as well as Ontario’s own HKK = Very well-made wine
WineAlign and other Canadian critics. Mention = Well-made wine

The 5-Star Scale BBM = Very good to excellent in its category
This popular system borrows from the familiar hotel- BMM = Good wine in its category
rating system. New Zealand wine critic Michael Cooper
favours this approach, as do some wine competitions.

                      Centuries of winemaking may

                      sensibility, but the current
                      generation of crafters is
                      decidedly forward thinking.

South Africa’s first wine was produced on February 2, 1659,
from vines planted in 1655, making the country the oldest of the
New World wine nations. Despite its long tradition of winemaking,
this New World region with an Old World sensibility remains, to
many, something of a viticultural enigma. But this impression is
rapidly changing, in no small part due to the efforts of dynamic,
forward-thinking winemakers whose daring, exploration and
experimentation are revealing new cooler growing regions and

GLENELLY
ESTATE
Glenelly was purchased in 2003 by then-78-year-old May de Lencquesaing,
who had overseen winemaking for Bordeaux’s Château Pichon Longueville
Comtesse de Lalande for over 30 years. Drawn to South Africa by a desire for
a new challenge and because of the potential she saw in the southern slopes
of Simonsberg, May tasked winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain with bringing
forth wines that spoke to the unique qualities of South Africa while echoing
the finesse and elegance of Bordeaux. Luke’s resumé includes stops with
such luminaries as Château Fieuzal, Angélus, Screaming Eagle and
Rustenberg, and since joining Glenelly in 2007, he has more than delivered.
Luke is assisted by Jerome Likwa, with whom he worked at Rustenberg.
There, the two developed a close-knit relationship along with a shared
understanding and approach to winemaking. Their minimalistic focus allows
the grapes the leeway to express their own character while revealing their
provenance with precision and purity.

Founded in 1692, Spier is far from stuck
in the past. It was the first Stellenbosch
producer to receive certification from the
Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association
and is a member of the Biodiversity and

led by cellar master Frans Smit, and
specialization is key. Frans oversees a
dynamic team of winemakers, each with a

by Johan Jordaan, the white wines by
Jacques Erasmus, and the organic
portfolio is managed by Tania Kleintjes.
This team approach has seen Spier
