Black History Spirit Week

For the week of February 12th-16th the Black Culture Club here at Dater High school hosted
an Black History spirit week in honor of Black History Month. On Monday we had Red,
Black, and Green Day , on Tuesday it was Hip-Hop Day , on Wednesday it was Affirmation
Day, on Thursday it was Soul Train Day , and on Friday it was Head wrap or Hat Day.
I interviewed Black Culture Club member, Ebony Jones and asked her a few questions. I
asked her what is the importance of Black Culture Club and she responded “ The importance
of Black Culture Club for me is to learn more about my culture and who I am.” I followed up
with the question of “Why is it so important to have a Black Culture Club Spirit week?” She
told me “It is important to have a Black history spirit week because there are so many ways
to celebrate Black History Month and yet most schools chose to overlook it and tell us the
same stuff, as long as I’ve been in school I’ve been learning about the same three people.
Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcom X and we just thought it was time for a
change.” Last, but not least I asked her “out of all the days of the spirit week which one was
the most important to her.” She responded “They are all equally important to me, mostly
because it was the first experience where I got to play a part in who I was and embrace my
culture.”

In every high school they are supposed to have at least
one homecoming a year. In October, 2017, Gilbert A.
Dater High School had a Neon Lights theme for
homecoming and it was a success.
The rules are no jeans or gym shoes. Everyone that
attends have to wear something dressy or casual. You
can bring up to one other person and the age limit is 21. With the season coming to an end Western Hills Boys Senior Night was held
All of the seniors came to an agreement that we want Friday , February 16, 2018 against the Taft senators @ 7:30 p.m .
to have a part two of homecoming. The theme was going
to be “Throwback Dance”. The date is set for March 10, The boys basketball team entered the game with a conference record of 2-7 and a

A Bloody Drink

February 26, 2016 Amanda Vice and her family ordered several drinks from a Starbucks in San
Bernardino.
When the family arrived home they spotted a red smear on one of the cups, with a “strong metallic
smell”, only to realize another cup being shared with their younger daughter had the same red stain.
Vice claims, “Once we drank it, then we could see on the inside of the rim that there was blood”,
she also added that her daughter was licking and eating whipped cream from the cup.
When confronted with the incident, the Starbucks manager offered the family free drinks for a week.
The manager also agreed to have the employee tested for any communicable diseases, but they
were not “forced”.
The family was left to schedule their own tests, fortunately they all came back negative, but they
have to be retested in 6 months to be sure.
StarBucks offered $1,000 to each family member, but the Vices attorney Stan Pekler states, “It does
not begin to compensate the family for suffered injuries and damages for which StarBucks is
reliable.”
