Club Information

From the Director of Member Engagement
Welcome June! June is certainly one of my favorite months
with the pool open, Ribs and Riffs, Kids Kamp, Bogie and
Bacall, just to name a few. It’s so fun to see and hear our
Club kids running around, having fun, and learning how to
swim, golf, and play tennis. I am thankful that we are back
fully operationally with KidZone, over 100 players each week
in Couples Golf, and lots of giggles poolside.
Save the Date for this month’s GNO Cocktail Making Class at
the Windsor Speakeasy on Tuesday, June 22, at 6:00 p.m.
Just a few spots remain, but you don’t want to miss out! It
was a sellout event last time, and I know we will learn so many new things this
go around as well. See Page 16 for more information.
Thank you to those of you who volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity Spring
Women Build. We were able to secure zip board and prepare the roof for
Sarah, a single mom’s future home...what a great opportunity to be a part of.
Mark your calendars for our next Blackthorn Gives Back Blood Drive on
Thursday, July 1 from 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Also, save the date for August’s
GNO Boating on Boone Tuesday, August 24. More details to come. We will be
joining our friends at Carefree Boat Club and fellow Blackthorn member Jessica
Luff, for a fabulous afternoon boating.
If you see new smiling faces around the Club, introduce yourself. It could be a
new member or a new staff member who may turn into one of your dearest
friends. If there’s ever an area you want to get more acquainted to, please do
not hesitate to reach out to me. Also, our friendly professional staff is here to
guide you in whatever you are interested in. Wanting to learn more about
Pickleball? John and his professional tennis staff will be glad to direct you.
Wanting to learn more about Golf? Mike and his professional golf staff have
clinics and private lessons for all ages..
Don’t forget to sign up for BLGA Ladies Guest Day on Tuesday, June 8. Space
is limited, so be sure to reach out to me to secure your spot! See Page 4 for
more details.
Lastly, please be mindful of our Club dress code. This can be found on the
back cover of every issue of INSIGHT. While we enjoy being a casual, family
atmosphere, sticking to traditional golf and tennis attire is mandatory. We
appreciate your cooperation.

   From the Head Golf Professional
The summer has arrived, and we are looking
forward to a busy season of member
tournaments, junior golf, and full tee sheets. We
are excited to announce some changes to our
golf operation policies that will allow us to provide
better service and increase the number of
players we can handle on a busy day. Beginning
on Saturday, June 12, our morning tee times will
be available off both holes #1 and #10 between
                  8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., and reservations must
include at least three golfers with the player’s
names listed. We will need all our available cart inventory to have
enough carts for that many morning reservations, so players will be
asked to ride together in a cart during this peak time. With the
increased demand for tee times please be considerate of the entire
membership and cancel tee times, if you have a conflict and are
not able to make your time. Rosé and Play Golf All Day
We will also be modifying the way our cart staff handles arrivals BLGA Ladies’ Guest Day

please drive your vehicle to the bag drop, and the staff will load 65.00++ per person

June looks to be a really busy month. We have quite a few new members and plenty of tournaments, so I hope to
see each and every one of you on the course. Now is the time when we need to be thinking about wear and tear
on the turfgrass. Other than some scattered spring dead spot and minor winter injury in places, the Bermudagrass
is right where it should be this time of year. That said, each season we get a few questions as to what exactly
constitutes proper observance of the 90 degree cart rule. When observing the 90 degree rule, we ask that each
golf cart remain on the cart path from the teeing area to a point where you can make a 90 degree turn from the
cart path to your ball. Once you have played your shot we ask that you either return to the cart path from that point
or proceed in the fairway until you come to the black directional posts. These posts signal that all golf carts must return to the cart
path from that point through the green.
If every golfer were to adhere to this simple rule, wear and tear in a number of rough areas would be tremendously reduced. Keep
in mind that healthy turf improves playing conditions which ultimately benefit you and your guests.

                                            Arthur Hills | 1930 - 2021
On May 18, Mr. Arthur Hills, course designer of Blackthorn Club, then known as The Ridges Golf and Country Club, passed away at
age 91. Mr. Hills was noted for more than 200 course designs all over the world, and more than 150 renovations.
In outlining all of his designs through the years, Mr. Hills wrote in his 2004 autobiography, The Works of Art, the following about his
work at The Ridges:

This private club in Johnson City is built on a piece of property that was pastureland. A small part of it is hilly. The terrain
and a creek make the layout very strategic. It is one of the most challenging courses we have ever designed.
A central mountain ridge dominates the property. This is another course we could so readily visualize by walking the
land. We took nostalgic photos of old building and the cattle grazing. We used the photos in a slideshow for the owners
to describe the holes to be built.
We didn’t have to do a lot of grading because the routing related especially well to the land, but there was a major power
line going through the site with three towers. We had to relocate the towers at a cost of $200,000 each. Indeed, power is
           expensive.
We did build one unusual hole, the eighth, a par 5, which has a fairway split by Boone’s Creek with a shortcut landing
area that can cut as much as forty yards off the hole. True to our philosophy, however, taking the short cut means being
faced with a carry over a lake on the second shot. It was safer to go around the lake, but it’s a longer way to go. The
credit for this hole belongs to Steve Forrest. It is too sophisticated for me to have figured out.
When we built it, The Ridges was the area’s only golf course community and as yet is the second of only two courses
           we’ve designed in Tennessee.

“It is one of the most challenging
    courses we have ever designed.”

If you have not had a proper sunburn at the pool by now, you need to get on it. Ice Cold Smoothies, Hand Tossed
Salads, Golden Fried Snacks, and of course, sunshine awaits you at the pool this season. Load the kids, the
towels, (and I guess the sunscreen) into the car and get down to the Club.
The Food and Beverage Department at Blackthorn has a great line-up of events this June, so be sure to stop by
for at least one to enjoy the best food in town.
Ribs and Riffs returns on Saturday, June 19. We’ll feature Slow Cooked Ribs finished on the grill outside then
served up with classic BBQ Sides like Ranch Potato Salad and Fried Okra. You will have five sauce options to
choose from while you groove on down to that cool, cool jazz.
The Father’s Day Sunday Brunch Feast is a “Dude Food” themed buffet of Smoked Prime Ribeye, Bourbon-Apple
Pork Shanks, Tater Tot Casserole, Macaroni and Cheese, and an obligatory green vegetable. Iceberg Wedge Salad Bar, Blackberry
Cobbler with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, and more will all be on this Father’s Day Sunday Brunch Buffet on Sunday, June 20.
Please note that on Saturday, June 26, the clubhouse will not be open for member dining after 3:00 p.m., to prepare for that
evening’s Bogie and Bacall party. The pool will remain open for drinks and snacks that afternoon and will close at its regular time of
8:00 p.m.
Make plans to spend Sunday, July 4, at Blackthorn. The pool will be a perfect temperature for relaxing and to enjoy our BBQ buffet
on the Pavilion. This year’s buffet will include slow cooked pulled pork, smoked ribs, grilled chicken, baked beans, thick-cut potato
chips, and an assortment of other side items and desserts. See Page 17 for full details.
