Boundary e-News
June 6, 2021

Dear Boundary Families,

When your children walk through the doors at École Boundary School we know that they all come with their
own stories, their own family values and traditions, and in some cases their own experiences with trauma. This
trauma may be situational and sometimes generational. School is now a place where we learn about ourselves
while we learn from the past. When we have access to historical truths, we are much better prepared to examine
current inequities, mindsets, world views, and the systematized atrocities that have led us to today.

This past week has been one of deep sorrow, reflection, and the acknowledgement that we still have much to
learn of this country’s past. 215 beautiful children, taken from their families and communities, have become the
seeds that will grow awareness and hope for more truth, knowledge, action, and reconciliation for the people of
this nation. As a visual tribute and acknowledgment, École Boundary students and staff placed 215 empty
chairs in front of the school on Wednesday to share with our community. We included some of our tiniest
chairs. A powerful image of the children and the generations we are missing. Classes walked through and
around these empty chairs with heavy hearts, big questions, and yearning minds. Our children now carry with
them the historical knowledge that we never received in our schooling. They will be the ones who will bring
their learning home to you. Please take the time to learn along-side them with open hearts and minds and a
willingness to respond to all Calls to Action.

This past week we also saw most of our students walk and wheel to and from school every day. This may have
been a shift in the way you usually get to school, but please know that the rosy cheeks, happy laughter, and
fewer cars, result in long term health for us and for this earth. We are so fortunate and privileged. We
acknowledge this with our deepest gratitude.

Let’s continue to open our hearts and minds to the healing work in which we all must participate.
Take care of yourselves, your families, and your community.
Breathe in the fresh air, be prepared, and love this land.
Please stay safe and play safe.
Acknowledge privilege and choose kindness always.

Boundary News
Bike to School Week
Bike (roll or walk) to School Week was a huge success! Over the course of the week, Boundary averaged 85%
of its student population walking or rolling to school. In some classes, they had 100% participation for multiple
days of the week. There were six classrooms that averaged 90% or more over the week, and 13 division in total
that averaged 80% or more for the week.

It was incredible to see all the different modes of transportation and smiling faces. On Friday, we had a live
draw for the class pizza prize. While there was only one winner for the pizza prize, we were all winners with
energized students, less traffic around the school and a cleaner environment. Congratulations to Division E02,
Mr. Coward / Ms. Wellbelove who were the lucky recipients of the random draw.

MyEd Reminder
MyEd Parent and Student Portal accounts will be disabled end of July. These accounts will remain disabled
until September. Remind parents to save report cards from the 2020-2021 school year PRIOR to the end of July
because all published report cards from this year will disappear as of July 31. In September, the parent portal
accounts will not display any past report cards.

Puzzle of The Week #23

Boundary PAC AGM
The Boundary PAC Annual General Meeting will be held on June 23 at 6:30pm. Join us virtually on Zoom for
the last PAC meeting as we wrap up the 2020-21 school year. A formal notice will be sent out this week and
the Zoom link will be provided on the day of the meeting.

Interested in joining the PAC Exec?
At this time of year, we start looking forward to the next school year and the composition of the PAC
Executive. Please email Claire (chair@boundarypac.ca) if you are interested in joining the Exec or would like
more information. We are also hoping for the return of some in-school events and the return of hot lunch at
some point, and so there will be more opportunities there to get involved!

Reminders
Lost and Found
Please see the following link for the last of the lost and found. We will be redisplaying the items at the end of
June. Any items left over will be donated. (https://bit.ly/3dl0Pgs).

Self-Assessment of Core Competencies
In May, each student completed a self-assessment of their growth and progress in these three broad-based
competencies. This summative document provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their growth since
September. Your child’s Self-Assessment of the Core Competencies has been saved in his/her Portfolio on the
NVSD Portal. In June, you will receive an email that explains how you can view your child’s Self-Assessment
of Core Competencies in his/her Portfolio on the NVSD Portal.

School Calendar
Next year’s school calendar has been posted to the Boundary website (https://bit.ly/3uAHvEGa). This calendar is a broad
view of the school year and does not include daily events to Boundary. Specific events related to Boundary’s
school year will be posted on the school’s website in September and will continue to evolve through the school
year.

School Supplies & Agenda for 2021-2022 School Year
Payments for school supplies and agendas (each item to be paid for separately) for the 2021-2022 school year
will be available to purchase through the School Cash online system. For more information, please see our
school’s website (https://bit.ly/3tP46wP ). Order deadline is May 31st.
Leaving Early from School
If you require your child to leave school for any reason, please send a message to the classroom teacher and the
school office at boundary@sd44.ca . A little pre-planning from home will reduce the number of disruptions to
the class and the office, as well, allow for a smooth transition for your child.
Are You Moving?
If your child(ren) is in Kindergarten to grade 6, please let the office know if you are planning on leaving
Boundary for the 2021-2022 school year. This information is extremely valuable as we start to plan for the next
school year.

Safe Arrival / Student Absences
Please see the end of the newsletter on how to sign-up and start using the Safe Arrival App to register an
absence or late arrival at Boundary. Please make every effort to let the school know if your child is absent or
will be late. This is important information for us to ensure all students are accounted for each day.

Band Registration
Band registration for the 2021-2022 school year will remain open until September 30, 2021. For more
information, please see the District website (https://bit.ly/2LFPAre ).

School Plan
Our school plan is now online. Please take a look at the new format which clearly articulates our goals around
math learning, responsibility, diversity and Indigenous worldviews. The school plan can be viewed on the
Boundary website (https://bit.ly/31fq8NK).

Daily Health Check Reminder
Parents are required to assess their child(ren) for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to sending them to school for
the day. This is the same checklist that NVSD staff must also complete. Parents are required to sign /
acknowledge a one-time submission through School Cash Online. This form indicates a daily responsibility to
assessing your child(ren) before sending your them to school. You can find the screener on the School District’s
website (https://bit.ly/2FKU78R).
