Improving communities in new ways is a priority goal of our
sustainability support. The very timely DigitalMINDSET
programme shines a light on excessive gaming and device use in
Singapore, and the negative impacts on teens and their families
in extreme cases. Through the ACLEDA-Jardine Educational
Foundation (AJEF), we were also thrilled to open the Leu Han
Primary School in remote Ratanakiri province near the Cambodia-
Vietnam border in November. The school opening was a great
way to close a year in which we broke new ground, but also faced
challenging headwinds, and a year-in-review (covering 2019
results) will feature in the next issue of Thistle.
There is a lot to look forward to in 2020, and in addition to
pushing on with your resolutions, I hope the year ahead is
rewarding and successful for both you and your loved ones on
many fronts.

Agriculture, food processing, manufacturing
and tourism are some of Vietnam’s
traditional sectors; what are some of the
emerging industries, and which ones stand
out from a Jardines perspective?
Everything that is consumer-driven. The
emergence of the middle class is significant
and driving strong demand for consumer
goods. Infrastructure is another growth
sector, as is energy, and there is a lot going
on in the solar and wind power sectors.
Digital is also developing fast; many

what do you see as the most in-demand
products and services from Vietnam’s

Education is number one by far. Any type of
education is in hot demand and not just for
children, but also young adults and adults.
There is a huge appetite for learning and

Astra Deploys Facial Recognition Tech to Improve Business
 and Operational Efficiencies
Finding new ways to better understand Astra’s customers – their
purchasing behaviours, preferences, likes and dislikes – is one of the
top priorities for Astra’s Digital team.
Using big data and facial recognition technology, Astra Digital has
run pioneering projects in recent months to learn more about
Astra’s diverse customer base, said Wayan Wisnu, the Department
Head Data Scientist for Astra Digital. “We are using big data and
facial recognition technologies to get a closer look at our
customers in terms of their purchasing characteristics, and
preferences. This data is then analysed to identify opportunities to
improve in terms of serving them better, especially anticipating
their needs and demands, and creating customised solutions that
 will make a difference.”
Facial recognition tech is used in four current Astra platforms
                                                                                                                            Astra Digital Scientist, Hans

Mr Wisnu said facial recognition technology has also been installed
in the Astra Head Office, Menara Astra (MA). The technology
enables receptionists to quickly identify visitors, see how many
times they visited, for how long, and who they met. The technology
is also used by the MA security team to make the building and
 premises safer and more secure.
