Kokosing’s Growth
Brian Burgett
Over my life, I have witnessed the needs of our
companies changing and consequently the offices
and shops undergoing change too. As a little boy,
our office and shop were housed entirely inside a
3,500 square foot block building. The office part of
that was 250 square feet (sf) and contained only
                      two desks.

By the time I graduated from college in 1973,
our office had taken over the entire 3,500 sf of shop space. This in turn
caused us to put up a salvaged building for storage and a shop totaling
nearly 9,000 sf. In 1974, we built our first real shop in Fredericktown
with an integrated overhead crane and a parts room.

By 1976, we added another 12,000 sf office to the existing 3,500
sf Fredericktown office. That took care of us until 1993 when we
purchased Concrete Construction. At that time, we were bursting at the
seams in Fredericktown and decided to move the Highway Division to
the Concrete Construction office on McKinley Avenue in Columbus, OH.
However, this was not enough office space for the highway division so
we immediately expanded that office from 5,000 sf to 10,000 sf.

I won’t go into all the details of our building growth over the years…
suffice it to say, every couple of years we have added space
somewhere for good reason. Which brings us to 2018. The first of
November we finished our most recent office expansion with the
addition of 50,000 sf at the Westerville, OH location. This allows us to
once again consolidate under one roof the main offices of Kokosing
Construction (highway) and Kokosing Industrial (treatment plant and
industrial). I am pleased to see these two companies in such close
proximity once again.

Also during this next year, we will be building a shop facility at the
Westerville location. This shop will replace the one we are selling
at Kokosing Construction’s old McKinley Avenue location. This new
complex will allow our team members to improve our efficiency in both
maintaining equipment and trucking of equipment and materials in this
region.

Because I know you all like numbers: Today our 3,500 team members
operate from 420,000 sf of warehouse and shop and 150,000 sf of
office!

I remember each office and maintenance shop being built and thinking
will we ever have a need for all of this space? You and our team
members that came before you, have always answered that question
with a resounding yes through your desire to grow and take on new
challenges. Kokosing’s growth, comes from each of us growing, from
taking pride in what we accomplish every day, and owning our 20
square
q feet. Thank you for all that you do.

Kokosing Industrial Receives Safety Award
Todd Sites, Superintendent

Kokosing Industrial was awarded the first annual American Electric Power Transmission Contractor Safety
Award. The receipt of this award would not have been possible without the deep commitment of the team

In 2017, 175 team members worked on AEP projects, a total of 92,411 man-hours on projects spread across
Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. These team members have displayed exemplary ownership, accountability,
and execution of our safety processes, including AEP-specific safety measures. Project leadership is
actively coaching, checking compliance, and setting a standard of zero at-risk behaviors for the crews. AEP
project teams have established a Safety 24/7 culture, where personal commitment drives towards the goal
