A KNIGHT’S MENTAL HEALTH

We know that the school year continues to present a variety of physical and
mental challenges for many of our families. We are grateful for Lindsey
Shafto, our Mental Health Therapist, who will be providing messages of
support and resources twice a month in our CPMS Family Newsletter.

"It’s been six months of this ever-changing and uncertain reality. Grief and
anxiety are at the top of most people’s minds. It’s your first-time parenting in
a pandemic, it’s your child’s first time being a student during a global health crisis, and the same for the
staff here at CPMS.
CANYON PARK NEWS Home of the Knight's September 25, 2020 Vol. 6
Do you feel like you have hit a wall? That’s normal, and you are not alone. What I know to be true is if
something is bothering or overwhelming one person, it’s probably feeling similar to another. But, it’s easy
to convince ourselves of the opposite. I am hearing from many students they feel alone in their
discouragement, disappointment, and even boredom.

It’s imperative to name our feelings and acknowledge the anxiety and weariness as normal. Every emotion
is welcome. Ask your children about their feelings (feeling charts are helpful), listen, and then validate. As a
parent, you desire to protect and fix, and maybe you are starting to feel helpless. Try your best to listen
and validate. It can sound something like this: “I can see you’re really upset. This must be so painful. Tell
me more.”

But is there more we can do? Let’s all play more. Dr. Stuart Brown, the founder of the National Institute for
Play, says, “the opposite of play is depression—” play being time spent without purpose. A walk, a fun
movie, card games, drawing, dance parties, or learning a family recipe are options. It may not be attainable
or accessible for some families, but remember, this “playtime” can be short and simple. The goal is to stay
in a relationship with people you care about and locate an energy source to help get you through the day.
I would encourage you to have each family member list what makes them feel free and rejuvenated and
see what you all have in common. Now more than ever, we need to hold fast to quality time.

Despite all of the unknown, here’s what I do know: we will get through this, we can do hard things, and it
won’t be this way forever. Reflect on how you are feeling today and make a list of ways to “play” as a
family — it will be worth it."

WHAT’S HAPPENING ON WEDNESDAY?

We have a lot of questions coming in regarding our Wednesday schedule. Our District recently made
changes to staff professional development time so teachers could strengthen their use of our new
technology systems.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: iReady testing continues next Wednesday for English classes. Students who have not
finished their English diagnostic will be contacted by their teacher to complete it on Wednesday,
September 30th.

The following schedule will begin on October 7**

8:30- 8:50 - 1st Period Homeroom (Attendance, students will work with their Homeroom teacher to plan
for the day)
9:00 - 10:30 - Asynchronous activities for students (These will include small group instruction, office hours
arranged with their teacher, peer connections like Assemblies. Teachers will inform students via email
regarding options and opportunities)

10:30 am- Use of Wednesday time will be at the discretion of the teacher. The teacher may engage in
professional development, or may also extend their office hours or host small groups.

Wednesdays are teacher dependent - there is no one schedule for all students - students will be made
aware of assemblies/clubs, need for office hours, through homeroom, classroom, and Schoology
communications

CURBSIDE LIBRARY BOOK PICK UP BEGINS SEPT. 30TH

When: Every Wednesday from 11AM-2PM

Where: Canyon Park Main Office – look for the yellow sign

How: Students need to go to the library catalog and place a hold on the title(s) they’d like and then
complete the curbside pick-up form. An instructional video is linked under the “2020-2021 Live from the
Library” section of my webpage and it was shown in all English classes. You will find the curbside pick-up
form in the corresponding section on that same webpage. As long as you make your requests by 8AM
Wednesday mornings, you can assume your books will be ready the same day!

and please follow social distancing guidelines!

CPMS HAS A NEW LOGO!

                                                                 Thank you ASB!
ASB was brainstorming ways to fill in for the
                                                         missing end-of-the-year activities.

ASB students came up with the idea for the mask logo as
a way to provide masks for students.

ASB approved the purchase of the actual
                                                                 physical face masks,
with the design of the mask logo,
which resulted in the new school logo!
