LANGA TOWNSHIP TOUR –
R210 or $25

     Langa Walking Tour

Townships were created as dormitory-styled, racially divided suburbs for black South Africans
during, and even before apartheid (political system in South Africa based on the National
Party policy of racial segregation). This will most probably be the tour that you remember
most vividly, long after you the shores of South Africa. It is all about the people. To truly
experience the warmth, friendliness and humanity of township residents, you have to walk its
streets. Hear the children at play, smell the sidewalk barbecues, taste locally brewed beer,
learn  to  say  “Molo”  and  experience  what  is  meant  by  “Ubuntu”.

Robben Island Museum
R230 or $26 for adults and R120 or $13 for children (U/18)

From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment,
isolation and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant
reminder to the newly democratic South Africa of the price paid for freedom.

Ferries depart at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela
Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Nelson Mandela - In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges,
and sentenced to life imprisonment. Mandela served 27 years in prison, many on Robben
Island and a few in Paarl, while an international campaign lobbied for his release. He is
best known as a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as
President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, the first to be elected in a fully
representative democratic election. His administration focused on dismantling
apartheid's legacy, cutting poverty and inequality. Politically left-wing, he served as
president of the African National Congress (ANC) political party from 1990 to 1999.
