CEDIA Education and Certification Event In
Gauteng, South Africa - March 2011
Monday 28th March to Saturday 2nd April 2011
VENUE: Indaba Hotel & Conference Centre, Gauteng
Presenters: CEDIA Certified Instructors from RSA
Rich Green, Founder Rich Green Ink.
                                                                                                                        Peter Aylett, CEDIA.

CEDIA is proud to announce its fourth education and certification event in RSA. Building on the previous three successful events,
the week’s education program has been designed to offer the following -

For individuals wanting to pass CEDIA EST2 Certification (previously called, and equivalent to, Installer Level One
          Certification)

We recommend that you follow the Installer College track and then take the EST2 exam. The installer track consists of 8 individual
courses that combined cover around 75% of the EST2 curriculum (See further down this document). Some experience installing
high performance equipment into homes is advantageous before registering for the exam. The courses, however, are also suitable
for newcomers. Courses may be booked and attended individually, or alternatively there is a discounted package price that
includes all of the courses in the Installer track as well as the CEDIA EST2 Certification exam.

For individuals who already hold a CEDIA certification and need CEU points

CEDIA certification is held by an individual, not a company. Certified individuals have a requirement to attain 30 CEDIA CEU points
in the three years following passing certification. Only courses taken AFTER the exam are eligible. Failure to do this within the
time-scale will mean that certified status is revoked. All CEDIA courses attended at this event will earn one CEU point per hour
taught. If a certified individual decides to go for a higher level of certification (For example, an Installer level one certified person
takes the Designer level one exam) and passes, than their CEU count is reset to zero and they then have 3 years from the date of
passing the new certification to earn 30 points.
This year we are extremely lucky to have Rich Green teaching the Designer courses. Rich’s knowledge and insights are unique
within the industry, and he is in great demand to present courses and seminars globally. This year’s courses are all either
completely new to RSA, or have been totally revised in nature meaning that existing holders of a CEDIA Designer Level One or
Installer Level One certification can be confident that by booking courses this year, they will be encountering both new material
and insightful new perspectives.
CEDIA Education and Certification Event In Gauteng, South Africa - March 2011
For individuals wanting to pass CEDIA Designer Level One Certification

CEDIA Designer Level One is now only available to individuals who are already Installer Level One or EST2 certified (Exceptions
may be made - Please contact peter@cedia.co.uk to discuss). It is essential that candidates wishing to take the exam have at
least two year’s of experience designing integrated electronic systems for the home. We are teaching four days worth of courses
to help prepare candidates for the exam. Please note that although these courses are excellent as both stand alone courses to
introduce participants to integrated systems design, as well as being good preparation for the exam, they do not constitute the
majority of the Designer Level One curriculum and candidates wishing to take the exam should do extra preparation, reading and
research (Please see the curriculum further down this document). Please contact peter@cedia.co.uk if you need to discuss your
suitability for the exam.
The Designer track courses are also excellent for existing Installer Level One and EST2 Certified individuals looking for CEU points
and an introduction to design skills sets.

Trade Supplier Product Training
On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, CEDIA Trade Supplier (Manufacturers and
distributors) will be hosting two hour long product training sessions from 17.00 to 19.00. These are a
great opportunity to add product knowledge to the CEDIA curriculum delivered during the day. Many
of these sessions will be accredited for CEDIA CEU points making them ideal for existing CEDIA
Certified individuals looking to earn CEU points. Details of these sessions will be released and
publicised over the coming weeks.

All courses must be booked on line at http://www.cedia.co.uk/cda_trainingcourses.php?

Monday 28th
15.00 - 19.00: CEDIA Reception, Networking, Press and Design Professionals’ Event
Free of Charge to Pre-Registered Guests

CEDIA is THE Trade Association that represents companies who design and install integrated home technology. Working across
fields as diverse as Energy Management to Home Cinema Design, a CEDIA member professional has the experience and skills to
deliver a fantastic user experience.
This session will serve three purposes -
• As a networking and discussion forum, this will be the place for industry professionals to come together and discuss where the
industry is going. Facilitated by Peter Aylett from CEDIA, and featuring a very special Guest, Rich Green, the session will be a
mixture of presentations, discussion forums and networking.
• As an industry showcase, CEDIA will be inviting guests from the press as well as design professionals from the construction,
homebuilding & remodelling and interior design professions to come along and help understand how a CEDIA member can help
with the current technological landscape within the home
• If you are already an industry professional, but not yet a CEDIA member, come and find out the benefits of joining. You will have
the opportunity to chat to CEDIA staff members as well as existing CEDIA members. If you book CEDIA training at the non-
members rate but then decide to join CEDIA within three months, we will refund you the difference between the members’ and
non-members’ rates. This could, effectively, make joining CEDIA free of charge!

Please contact Peter Aylett (peter@cedia.co.uk) regarding the courses. Please book at www.cedia.co.uk/education
Please contact Suzanne Collin (suzanne@cedia.co.uk) if you require any further information regarding logistics.

business leader, now is the time to launch a strategy that will survive the current economic climate by embracing opportunities for
new technology applications in the home. Topics will include future user interfaces, broadband Internet technologies, home
networking, wireless devices, digital media distribution, intelligent agents, and exciting developments in interactive multimedia

Energy and Energy Management are becoming global issues that no country can afford to ignore. With rising energy costs both in
terms of money and the harm to the environment, our industry is ideally placed to both save energy in the home and help
homeowners to live more sustainable lives. This course will be looking at solutions for reducing energy usage in the home as well
as the global trends that mean that understanding energy will come to dominate our industry thinking.

customer and an on-time and budget project is understanding both the customer’s needs and the designer’s role during the entire
life-cycle of the project.
This course will teach participants about holistic design that includes a thorough needs analysis of a client, writing a functional
specification for the system and making sure that the designer understands their role in the process.
The course will consist of both teaching and workshop sessions. Attendees will be given access to a resources package
containing example system drawings and documentation.

around implementing those RPs (Which will be sent to you in advance) in the real world. Working in groups of three, you will be
given a scenario comprising a client brief and some drawings. You will then have the day to use the recommended practices and
design a cinema that meets the client brief. This is not an introductory course, but an opportunity for participants to explore how
to take their cinema designs to the highest level. The course instructor will be present to give guidance throughout the day.
Approximately two weeks after the course, attendees will be given the opportunity to discuss their work with global subject matter
experts during a conference call.

This session will take the form of a real-world design project. Starting with a mock client interview, we will review all the elements
that make up a fully integrated home in a practical setting. Working in groups of three, you will be given a client brief and a set of
drawings. From these you will produce a design paying special attention to using engineering calculations and meeting the client
brief. There will be lots of time for individuals to ask questions of the class tutors in order to review their knowledge. Even if you
have taken this course in the past, this year we will be introducing a new format that will challenge participants to innovate.
This course is suitable as a ‘review’ prior to candidates taking the CEDIA Designer Level One certification exam.
